Lyft announced on March 27, 2023, that co-founder Logan Green would leave the CEO role on April 17 and co-founder John Zimmer would leave the presidency on June 30. Neither announcement meant an immediate departure from Lyft: Green became board chair, Zimmer remained vice chair, and both continued as directors and non-employee advisers during a one-year transition period.
What Lyft announced
Lyft described the change as a planned leadership succession. The founders moved out of full-time executive management on different dates, while retaining roles intended to support board oversight and the handoff. The company’s March 27 announcement and subsequent Form 8-K filing document the transition.

Did Green and Zimmer leave Lyft?
No—not when the succession was announced. They stepped away from day-to-day executive management, but the company said both would remain on its board and serve as non-employee advisers for 12 months after their respective transitions. Green took the board chair role, while Zimmer remained vice chair. These were governance and transition roles, not continued full-time executive positions.
Who took over?
David Risher became CEO
Risher, a Lyft board member since July 2021, became CEO on April 17, 2023. Lyft described him as a former Amazon and Microsoft executive and co-founder of the nonprofit Worldreader. He succeeded Green as chief executive.

Kristin Sverchek became president
Lyft’s initial March 27 plan said Risher would also become president on July 1. The company later appointed Kristin Sverchek president effective that date, leaving Risher to focus on the CEO role. The revised appointment appears in Lyft’s April 2023 filing.
Why did the founders step down?
Lyft presented the move as succession planning, saying leadership succession had long been an important board responsibility and that it was the appropriate time for the founders to step back. The announcement did not say they had been fired or forced out, and it did not cite misconduct or a specific incident as the reason.

The timing came amid significant business pressure, though the available company filings do not establish that any one factor caused the succession:
- Lyft’s 2022 annual filing identified Uber as its principal ridesharing competitor in the United States and Canada and described the market as intensely competitive. Lyft’s 2022 Form 10-K sets out that competitive context.
- In November 2022, Lyft announced plans to eliminate about 683 jobs, or 13% of its workforce, as it sought to reduce operating expenses and adjust cash flows. The company’s first-quarter 2023 filing describes the restructuring.
- For fiscal 2022, Lyft reported $4.1 billion in revenue and a $1.6 billion net loss, which included substantial stock-based compensation. Those figures are in its fiscal 2022 earnings filing.
Contemporary outside coverage framed the leadership change against Lyft’s competitive struggle with Uber, but that is analysis of the context, not a reason Lyft stated for the founders’ transitions. See Investing.com’s report and Axios’s coverage.

What the succession meant for Lyft
The change shifted operational leadership from Lyft’s co-founders to an outside executive while preserving the founders’ involvement in board governance and a defined advisory transition. That arrangement could help retain institutional knowledge during a handoff, while giving Risher responsibility for running the company. In light of the documented layoffs, losses, and competition, investors and employees had reason to watch how the new leadership handled execution and costs; those pressures do not prove that the succession itself would produce any particular business or stock-market outcome.
