Zero-click search was a real traffic risk in 2025, particularly for sites answering simple informational queries—but there is no single percentage that describes the impact on every site. A drop in clicks with steady impressions can be consistent with search-result features satisfying more queries on Google, including AI Overviews. It is not proof: rankings, demand, seasonality, technical problems and tracking changes can produce similar patterns.
For personal-finance publishers, the practical question is whether exposed queries are losing clicks and whether that loss affects revenue, leads or reader relationships. Measure visibility, traffic and business outcomes separately before deciding how to respond.
What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a search in which a user gets an answer or completes an action on the results page without visiting an external website. The result may come from a featured snippet, knowledge panel, calculator, weather or finance result, local pack, “People also ask,” shopping module, or an AI-generated answer such as an AI Overview.
Zero-click does not necessarily mean zero value to a business. Someone may see a publisher or financial brand, remember it, search for it later, or act through a phone number or map listing. But a search impression without a website visit usually does not generate the pageview, ad impression, affiliate click or lead that a publisher might otherwise earn.

What the evidence says about 2025
The evidence supports a qualified answer: zero-click behavior was already widespread before 2025, and AI answer features were another potential source of click displacement. Studies measure different populations and outcomes, so their figures should not be combined into one forecast for an individual site.
| Evidence | What it says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SparkToro and Datos, 2024 | 58.5% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click to the open web in the study. | This is a U.S. clickstream result for 2024, not a global or 2025-only measurement. Read the study. |
| Ahrefs, 2025 | Its analysis of approximately 300,000 keywords reported a 34.5% lower CTR for the top organic result when an AI Overview appeared. | This is an aggregate observed association, not a guaranteed causal loss for every query or site. Informational queries were particularly exposed. Read the analysis. |
| Google, August 6, 2025 | Google said total organic click volume to websites was relatively stable year over year and that average click quality had increased. | This is Google’s aggregate claim; the announcement does not fully disclose its methodology or scope. Read Google’s statement. |
These claims are not necessarily contradictory. A stable aggregate can conceal losses for some queries, publishers or business models alongside retained or gained clicks elsewhere. The 2024 SparkToro result describes no-click behavior broadly; the Ahrefs result compares CTR when a particular feature appears; Google describes aggregate click volume and quality. None tells a site owner exactly what happened to their own query mix.
How AI Overviews can change the traffic equation
- Google places a synthesized answer above or among conventional results.
- A user may get enough information to stop searching without opening a source.
- Traditional listings may appear lower or receive less attention, reducing the chance of a click.
- A page may be cited in the answer, but a citation does not guarantee a visit.
Simple questions—such as basic definitions, general explanations or easily summarized facts—are more susceptible than searches requiring a comparison, a calculation tailored to a person’s situation, a product, a tool, original reporting or a transaction. That is a tendency, not a rule: an informational page can still attract visibility and qualified visits if it offers useful depth beyond a short summary.

Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the overall Web performance data in Search Console. That means ordinary reporting can help diagnose changes, but it does not automatically provide a complete, clean measure of all clicks caused or displaced by AI features. Google began rolling out dedicated generative-AI performance reports to a subset of sites in June 2026; availability may vary by property. Google’s documentation on AI features and Search reporting and its announcement of the report rollout describe the current reporting context.

Finance content spans simple answers, high-stakes decisions and transactions. Exposure depends on the actual query, the result layout and what the business earns from a visit—not simply on whether a site covers finance.
| Query or business type | Potential exposure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Basic definitions and general explainers | Higher | A short definition or general fact may be summarized directly in results. |
| Generic rate, fee or eligibility questions | Variable | Some answers can be condensed; the user may still need current, personalized or provider-specific details. |
| Credit-card or loan comparisons | Variable | A summary may narrow options, but detailed terms, eligibility, trade-offs and application steps can still motivate a visit. |
| Affiliate publishers | Potentially high | Fewer clicks can reduce opportunities for outbound affiliate actions even if visibility remains. |
| Ad-supported publishers | Potentially high | Search exposure without a pageview generally does not produce the page-level advertising opportunity. |
| Original research and proprietary data | Lower or variable | Distinct findings, methodology and interpretation may give readers a reason to open the source; visibility still does not assure a click. |
| Tools, calculators and personalized workflows | Lower or variable | A result may provide general guidance, while users needing an individualized estimate or action may need the tool itself. |
| Branded, transactional or high-consideration searches | Variable | Users may be seeking a specific company, product, application or trusted expert rather than a standalone fact. |
In personal finance, trust and nuance matter: generic summaries cannot substitute for careful explanation of assumptions, eligibility, costs, risks and differences among products. That does not guarantee a click, but it gives a page a stronger purpose than repeating a basic answer.

How to check whether zero-click search is affecting your site
Start with first-party data. Google recommends using Search Console, Google Trends and data-anomaly information when investigating a traffic drop rather than assuming a particular cause. Google’s traffic-drop troubleshooting guide provides its diagnostic approach.
- In Google Search Console, open Performance → Search results. Compare 2025 with 2024 using matching date ranges; account for partial periods and seasonal differences.
- Review total clicks, total impressions, average CTR and average position. Treat these as related signals, not standalone diagnoses.
- Break the report down by query and page, then by country, device and Search appearance where available. Identify pages with stable or rising impressions but falling clicks and CTR.
- Group affected queries by intent: informational, navigational, commercial investigation, transactional or local. Compare losses across groups instead of treating every query as equivalent.
- Check the actual results for affected searches, where possible, for AI Overviews, featured snippets, local packs, video, image, shopping and “People also ask” modules. A feature’s presence is evidence of exposure, not proof that it caused a specific lost click.
- In Google Analytics or another analytics platform, compare organic landing-page sessions with engagement, conversions, revenue and assisted conversions. Include affiliate outbound clicks or lead actions where relevant.
- Use Google Trends and first-party demand data to check whether interest in the topic fell. Then review indexing, manual actions, technical incidents, migrations, canonical tags, robots.txt, algorithm updates and analytics tracking changes.
A suggestive pattern is stable or rising impressions, broadly stable average position, falling CTR and clicks, with the largest declines on informational queries that now show answer features. This is consistent with click displacement, but changes in query mix, seasonality, competitors, device mix or title appeal can produce a similar pattern.
If impressions and clicks both fall sharply, or average position worsens, investigate demand, ranking, technical and competitive causes before assigning the decline to zero-click results. A branded or navigational query decline, a tracking change, or a drop that predates the relevant feature also weakens the zero-click explanation.
Separate visibility, traffic and business results
Track three layers; a result at one layer does not guarantee a result at the next.
- Visibility: impressions, Search appearance, average position, brand mentions and AI-feature appearances or citations when reporting makes them available.
- Traffic: clicks, CTR, organic sessions, landing-page sessions, new and returning users, and separately identifiable referrals from AI tools.
- Business outcome: leads, sales, revenue, affiliate actions, email signups, trial starts, assisted conversions, branded-search growth and direct-traffic trends.
Last-click analytics can miss influence: a person may see a citation, later type a URL, search for the brand again or return through an app that does not preserve referral information. Conversely, a traffic decline is not automatically a business decline. Compare total conversions, revenue per organic session, revenue per click, lead quality and customer-acquisition cost before choosing a response.
The difference is especially important by business model. A publisher paid mainly by pageviews can be harmed when impressions do not become visits. A lead-generation or software business may tolerate fewer visits if qualified conversions and revenue hold up. Affiliate sites need to monitor both organic sessions and outbound partner actions.

What to do when impressions are steady but CTR falls
- Find the specific queries and result features associated with the decline before changing the whole site.
- Give readers a reason to visit: original data, clear methodology, worked examples, careful comparisons, first-hand testing, useful tools or downloadable resources.
- Make titles and descriptions accurately distinguish the page from a generic answer; improve their relevance and clarity rather than relying on keyword repetition.
- Match the next step to intent, such as a comparison, calculator, detailed explanation or application guide.
- Strengthen relevant internal links so readers can move from a general answer to more useful specialist material.
- Answer the reader’s question honestly. Do not hide basic information or create a misleading “click gap” merely to force a visit.
Respond according to the business model
Ad-supported publishers
Because advertising often depends on pageviews, prioritize diversification if search referrals supply a large share of audience or revenue. Build direct relationships through newsletters, memberships, communities, events or subscriptions, and invest in original reporting or data that gives readers a distinct reason to return.
Affiliate publishers
Measure outbound affiliate actions and revenue alongside visits. Make comparisons genuinely useful by explaining terms, eligibility, costs and trade-offs, and connect informational pages to relevant decision tools or product guides without implying that every reader should apply.
Local finance businesses
Website sessions are only part of the picture. Depending on the service, also track calls, booking requests, messages, profile interactions and branded searches; a local result may prompt a valuable action without a website visit.
E-commerce and product providers
Follow searches through to product views, applications, completed transactions and revenue. Make important product-specific information—such as terms, costs and eligibility—clear and current so a general search answer is not the only information a potential customer sees.
SaaS and lead-generation businesses
Assess qualified leads, trial starts, assisted conversions and revenue per visit, not just organic session volume. A lower-volume query portfolio may still be valuable when it reaches people with a concrete problem and a relevant next step.
Specialist and research publishers
Show what is distinct about the work: original data, transparent methods, expertise and interpretation. These features can make a page more useful than a short synthesized answer, though they cannot guarantee a ranking, citation or click.
Quick Recap
What not to conclude or do
- Do not treat SparkToro’s 2024 U.S. figure as the 2025 rate for every country, device or site.
- Do not apply Ahrefs’ 34.5% aggregate CTR finding as a forecast for your own pages.
- Do not assume every traffic decline is caused by AI Overviews or another zero-click feature; test ranking, demand, seasonality, technical and tracking explanations.
- Do not measure only sessions. A pageview decline has different implications for an ad publisher than for a business whose qualified leads and revenue remain steady.
- Do not assume a paid SEO platform can reveal Google’s internal AI ranking logic. Google says its foundational requirements remain crawlability, indexability, eligibility for snippets, policy compliance and useful content, not special AI-search hacks. Its guidance emphasizes unique, satisfying, original content and warns against unsupported claims about third-party tools’ access to internal systems.
