In a June 2020 interview, newly appointed NXP CEO Kurt Sievers signaled continuity in the company’s business and financial strategy, while identifying innovation culture and people leadership as areas he wanted to develop. His comments on the pandemic and China describe that moment—not NXP’s current policies, leadership, or revenue mix.

What did Sievers say would change at NXP?

Sievers told EE Times that he did not expect a sudden strategic reset. He said NXP’s business model, financial strategy, and key portfolio choices already reflected his input, and framed his leadership as an evolution of the direction set under predecessor Rick Clemmer.

He credited Clemmer with emphasizing focus: investing where NXP could outperform rather than trying to pursue every opportunity in the semiconductor industry. Sievers summed up that discipline this way: “We know what we do, and we know also what we do not do.”

His stated priorities for further development were innovation culture and the people side of leadership. He argued that semiconductor work spans disciplines and that collaboration among specialists in physics, software, and hardware is essential. “Nobody can do it alone,” he said.

Why was Sievers an internal successor?

At the time of the interview, Sievers had worked at NXP and its Philips predecessor for nearly 25 years. He had been NXP’s president since 2018 and was part of its executive management team from 2009. He described moving from studies in physics and information technology to his first private-sector job at Philips: although he initially considered components, he accepted a product-engineering role in semiconductors focused on microcontrollers.

The interview introduced NXP as an $8.88 billion company in 2020. That is the scale cited in the June 2020 article, not a current revenue figure.

What did he say about the pandemic and company operations?

Sievers discussed employee safety, business continuity, and maintaining customer supply chains during the first phase of COVID-19. He also addressed whether remote research-and-development teams could keep work such as tape-outs and test-pattern development moving. These were his assessments of NXP’s operations in 2020; the interview does not establish present-day work arrangements or performance.

What did Sievers say about NXP’s China business?

Asked how much revenue NXP generated from China, Sievers called the market significant but did not give a percentage. He explained that a shipment’s reported destination may not reveal where a chip was made or where it is ultimately used: a product could be manufactured in Europe or the United States, incorporated into a module there, and later shipped to another market.

The interview also noted that NXP had cited China as 39 percent of revenue in 2012. That historical figure is not a 2020 or current estimate. Sievers said NXP still had to comply with applicable export-control rules and described requirements as changing frequently at the time. His remarks are not current revenue data or compliance guidance.

Who is NXP’s CEO now?

Sievers was the incoming CEO when Junko Yoshida interviewed him for EE Times on June 2, 2020. NXP’s current leadership page identifies Rafael Sotomayor as president and CEO, effective October 2025. Accordingly, “new CEO” applies to the historical interview context, not to NXP’s leadership today.
