HPE completed its acquisition of Morpheus Data on August 30, 2024, adding multicloud provisioning, orchestration, automation and FinOps software to its GreenLake and private-cloud strategy. HPE’s FY2024 SEC filing records $147 million in acquisition-date fair-value consideration, primarily cash paid for Morpheus Data’s outstanding common stock.

What HPE acquired and how much it paid

HPE announced a definitive agreement to acquire Morpheus Data on August 15, 2024, and said the transaction closed on August 30, 2024. Its FY2024 SEC filing reports $147 million in acquisition-date fair-value consideration, primarily cash paid for outstanding common stock. That figure is the accounting fair value disclosed in the filing, not necessarily a separately announced headline purchase price.

Why Morpheus fit HPE’s cloud strategy

HPE said Morpheus would extend GreenLake and HPE’s private-cloud portfolio with software for managing hybrid and multicloud environments. Its stated strategic goal was to help customers provision and orchestrate applications across cloud and infrastructure providers, automate workloads, and manage cloud spending.

HPE executive Fidelma Russo described the acquisition as a step toward making GreenLake “the de facto platform for innovating across hybrid IT.” That statement explains HPE’s ambition; it is not an independent assessment of product performance.

Morpheus and OpsRamp have different roles

HPE positioned Morpheus alongside OpsRamp, its IT operations management and observability offering. In that portfolio framing, Morpheus provides orchestration and automation, while OpsRamp provides operational monitoring and management. The intended combination connects the work of deploying and governing workloads with visibility into how IT environments are operating.

What Morpheus software does

HPE describes Morpheus as a hybrid-cloud management and platform-operations product. Its stated capabilities include multivendor application provisioning and orchestration, lifecycle automation, self-service provisioning, and FinOps functions for understanding cloud expenditure, setting usage guardrails and optimizing workloads.

HPE’s developer portal presents the platform as vendor-agnostic, with a centralized control plane, governance and policy enforcement, APIs, and a plugin framework. These are HPE’s product descriptions, not an independent evaluation of how the software performs in a particular customer environment.

How HPE has integrated Morpheus since the deal

Standalone software and portfolio integration

When it announced the acquisition, HPE said Morpheus technology would be integrated into GreenLake and its private-cloud portfolio while remaining available as standalone software, with support for existing customers and partners. The acquisition therefore had two strands: adding Morpheus capabilities to HPE’s broader cloud portfolio and continuing to offer the software on its own.

VM Essentials and Enterprise positioning

In May 2025, HPE positioned HPE Morpheus Enterprise as a way to provision workloads across hypervisors and clouds with governance and financial guardrails. HPE also described a path from VM Essentials to Enterprise. In the same announcement, it claimed cloud costs could be up to 30% lower and provisioning up to 150 times faster. Those are HPE-stated potential outcomes, not independently validated or guaranteed results.

Capabilities announced in June 2026

HPE’s June 2026 product update announced Morpheus Central for visibility, governance and management across multiple deployments, an orchestration copilot, software-defined networking, and integrations with other HPE offerings. These reflect capabilities HPE announced at that time; exact availability and packaging depend on the terms of that product update and may change.

Market opportunity cited at the time

HPE’s August 2024 announcement cited an IDC forecast of a $36 billion intelligent CloudOps software market by 2027, from IDC’s Worldwide Intelligent CloudOps Software Forecast, 2024–2028, published in July 2024. This was a forecast quoted by HPE, not a report of market size already reached.
