Temporal became a unicorn in February 2022 after announcing a $100 million Series B led by Index Ventures, at a valuation above $1.5 billion. GeekWire reported the financing as $103 million. The distinction matters: Temporal’s own release says $100 million, and the available accounts do not explain the difference.
The Seattle-area startup was about three years old and had roughly 55 employees, according to GeekWire. Its product was not a budgeting or personal-finance app: Temporal builds infrastructure software that helps companies run complex application workflows reliably. Later financing has made the 2022 valuation a historical milestone, not a statement of the company’s current worth.
What Temporal announced in February 2022
Temporal said it had raised a $100 million Series B led by Index Ventures, with Sequoia Capital, Amplify Partners, Madrona Venture Group and Addition Ventures participating. The company said its valuation had passed $1.5 billion and that total funding exceeded $120 million. GeekWire reported the round as $103 million and described Temporal as a 55-person company. The two amounts should remain attributed to their respective sources; neither source establishes why they differ.
The company was founded in 2019. In GeekWire’s 2022 account, Maxim Fateev was CEO and Samar Abbas was CTO. Both had worked at Uber, and their earlier experience included building workflow and orchestration systems. Temporal’s announcement described the founders as having worked at Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Uber. Temporal’s Series B announcement and GeekWire’s report provide the original figures and context.

What Temporal does—and why it matters
Companies often run a single customer-facing process across many services: databases, queues, APIs, cloud systems and workers. Imagine an order that must reserve inventory, collect payment, arrange shipping and wait for a customer’s approval. If one service goes down halfway through, the application must know what has already happened, what can safely be retried and what needs to be undone or resumed later.
Teams can build that coordination themselves using message queues, databases, scheduled jobs, retry libraries, idempotency keys, state machines, monitoring and reconciliation code. The pieces can work, but the recovery logic becomes another system the team must design and operate. Temporal’s proposition is to provide a durable execution platform so developers can express multi-step work as workflows while the platform records progress and coordinates recovery.
That makes “developer productivity startup” an incomplete description. Productivity is part of the pitch: engineers can spend less time rebuilding retry and recovery machinery. Technically, Temporal is a workflow-orchestration and distributed-systems platform, with a managed cloud service as well as self-hosted software. It coordinates work across microservices; it does not replace microservices or make every application reliable automatically.

Durable execution, in practical terms
A Temporal workflow can last seconds, days or longer. Its progress and execution history are persisted so that if a worker or service fails, the workflow can resume from its recorded logical state rather than rely on an engineer to reconstruct everything manually. Workflows can coordinate activities, delays, retries and external events.

Durability is a set of mechanisms, not a guarantee that every side effect will be safe. Workflow code must follow replay and determinism requirements; external operations should be placed in appropriate activities. Retried activities can repeat a side effect unless the operation is idempotent or protected against duplicates. Teams also need to plan for workflow-version changes, payload size and sensitivity, data retention, recovery and deployment operations.
Open source and Temporal Cloud
Temporal’s 2022 release described its platform as MIT-licensed open source. Organizations can run the software themselves or use Temporal Cloud, the company’s managed hosted service. These are different operating choices, not merely free and paid editions.

| Choice | What the team takes on | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted Temporal | Infrastructure, persistence, upgrades, capacity, availability, disaster recovery, security, monitoring and incident response. | Organizations that want infrastructure control and have platform-engineering expertise to operate it. |
| Temporal Cloud | The provider manages the hosted service; the buyer still owns application design, workflow correctness, data decisions and integration. | Teams that value a managed service, faster setup and reduced operational burden, subject to cost, compliance and vendor-dependence review. |
Temporal’s 2023 coverage described its hosted product as offering enterprise service-level agreements. Current pricing and specific feature availability are not established here, so buyers should check the live product and pricing information before estimating costs. Temporal Cloud is the company’s product page; its 2022 release describes the open-source offering and licensing claim.
Why investors saw a large opportunity
As companies adopt cloud services and break applications into more components, coordinating state across systems becomes harder. Reliability failures can interrupt revenue or damage customer trust, while bespoke orchestration code consumes engineering time. A common execution layer could address that problem across many industries and workloads.

The founders’ prior work on workflow infrastructure, including systems associated with Amazon and Uber, gave the company relevant experience. That combination—an infrastructure problem, a developer-oriented entry point and a possible hosted business—helps explain investor interest, but a valuation alone does not establish revenue, profitability or product economics.

What the customer examples show—and do not show
Temporal’s 2022 announcement named Netflix, DoorDash, Snap, Box, Stripe, HashiCorp, Coinbase, Descript, Instacart and Datadog among companies using or associated with the platform. The release said Instacart was running more than 75 million workflows monthly and described Netflix using Temporal in its CI/CD platform. Those are company-provided claims; the list does not establish that every organization used the same deployment model, scale or commercial arrangement.
Temporal’s open-source origins are connected to its founders’ work at Uber on Cadence, a workflow system. That history is relevant lineage, not proof that Cadence and Temporal are interchangeable. Teams comparing them should examine current maintenance, SDKs, compatibility and support independently.
When a durable workflow platform may be too much
Temporal is most compelling when processes span services, run for a long time, need delayed steps or human approvals, must recover from partial failure, or require carefully managed retries and compensation. For a simple stateless request, basic scheduled task or uncomplicated background job, a workflow platform may add more concepts and operational commitments than it removes. A team should compare it with capabilities it already operates and with cloud-native options that fit its environment.

Before adopting it, engineering leaders should evaluate supported SDK languages, determinism and replay, worker deployment, persistence dependencies, workflow versioning, visibility and debugging, disaster recovery, security and network integration, data retention, payload handling, pricing drivers and a practical exit plan. They should also decide whether to self-host or pay for managed operations. The right choice depends on workload, compliance constraints, team expertise and predictable total operating cost.

Temporal’s valuation changed after the Series B. In February 2023, the company announced a $75 million funding extension; TechCrunch reported that it remained at approximately the $1.5 billion valuation. In March 2025, Temporal announced a $146 million Series C at a $1.72 billion post-money valuation. A separate October 2025 report described a $105 million secondary transaction at a $2.5 billion valuation. A secondary transaction is not directly equivalent to a company raising new primary capital at that valuation. On February 17, 2026, Temporal announced a $300 million Series D at a $5 billion valuation.
These figures describe distinct events and should not be read as a smooth, continuously rising price for the company. The 2023 and 2025 primary-round figures were reported by TechCrunch and Temporal, respectively; the secondary transaction was reported by Business Wire. The latest financing figure comes from Temporal’s Series D announcement.
Alternatives depend on the cloud and programming model
Temporal is not the only way to coordinate work. The closest fit depends on whether a team wants code-centric durable workflows, cloud-native service orchestration or a simpler background-job tool.
- AWS Step Functions is a natural option to assess for AWS-centered service orchestration.
- Azure Durable Functions is designed for Azure Functions and Microsoft-oriented serverless applications.
- Google Cloud Workflows provides managed orchestration for Google Cloud and HTTP-based integrations.
- Uber Cadence is an open-source alternative with historical ties to Temporal’s engineering lineage; current ecosystem and support should be compared rather than assumed equivalent.
- Inngest and Trigger.dev may suit product teams looking for developer-oriented event workflows or background jobs without the same level of distributed-workflow machinery.
The key question is not whether a tool is popular, but whether the application has enough long-running, failure-prone, multi-step work to justify adopting and operating a durable execution model.
