In 2022, Spotify and Google tested a way for some Android users to choose between paying for Spotify Premium through Google Play or directly through Spotify. The choice mainly changed who processed the payment, handled billing issues and managed the subscription—not whether Spotify was automatically cheaper. Google’s billing programs have since evolved, so the original two-option checkout should not be assumed to appear for every Spotify subscriber or in every country today.
What Spotify and Google introduced
On March 23, 2022, Google announced User Choice Billing, a pilot that let participating developers offer an alternative payment system alongside Google Play Billing. Spotify was Google’s first “innovation partner.” The arrangement was a pilot for eligible users, not a universal change to Android payments.
Rollout coverage published on November 10, 2022, reported that some Spotify Android users subscribing to Premium could choose between Spotify and Google Play at checkout. Selecting Google Play opened its payment flow; selecting Spotify opened a Spotify-controlled payment form, including card-entry fields. Those reports describe the 2022 experience, not necessarily the current app interface or availability. Droid Life’s rollout report documented the choices at that time.
What changed when you chose one route over the other
The important distinction was the merchant and billing relationship. Google Play handled a Play-billed purchase; Spotify or its payment provider handled an alternative-billed purchase. Google’s consumer guidance says that the alternative-billing provider is responsible for the purchase and its support. It also cautions that Google does not secure payment information entered with a developer or alternative billing provider. These are Google’s descriptions of its billing arrangements, not an independent security audit. Google’s consumer billing guidance explains the distinction.
#1 Best Overall
| What matters | Google Play Billing | Spotify or alternative billing |
|---|---|---|
| Who processes the transaction | Google Play | Spotify or its payment provider |
| Who to contact about the purchase | Google Play for the Play-billed transaction | Spotify or the alternative billing provider |
| Where billing management is expected | Google Play subscription tools | Spotify account or the provider’s tools |
| Payment details and purchase protections | Google Play handles the transaction under its billing system | Google says it does not secure payment information supplied to the developer or alternative provider |
Before requesting a refund, disputing a charge or cancelling, identify who actually billed you. Check the purchase confirmation, subscription-management page and card or bank statement. An account at Spotify does not by itself tell you which company controls the recurring payment.
What the choice meant for a subscriber’s finances
It did not promise a lower price
Choosing Spotify billing could give Spotify more control over payment methods, promotions and its relationship with subscribers. It could also reduce the share of revenue associated with Google Play’s billing service. Neither point proves that Spotify passed savings on to customers. The 2022 announcement did not establish a general price discount, and no current country-specific price comparison is established here.

It could change which payment tools were useful
Google identifies features associated with Play Billing such as Play gift cards, Play Points, family payment methods and parental controls. Availability depends on market and eligibility. A direct Spotify route may suit someone who prefers a payment method or account relationship offered by Spotify, but the available methods can differ. Compare the actual checkout options rather than assuming either route accepts a particular card, wallet or gift balance.
It could matter when switching devices
A Spotify subscription is associated with a Spotify account, which can make a directly managed payment relationship less tied to one mobile platform. But changing phones does not automatically transfer billing control: if Google Play is charging you, cancellation or payment changes generally need to be handled with Google Play; if Spotify is charging you, use Spotify’s account or billing tools. The contemporary discussion of direct billing described this potential cross-platform convenience, but it is not a guarantee that every billing issue transfers automatically. The 2022 discussion of direct billing and platform changes covers that rationale.

Why Google allowed an alternative
The pilot arrived amid disputes over app-store commissions, required billing systems and developers’ control of customer relationships. Google presented User Choice Billing as a way to test an alternative while keeping Google Play Billing available; Spotify’s participation was a Google pilot, not evidence that a law required this specific arrangement.
Google did not simply give up its fee. Its program documentation says applicable service fees continue to apply to alternative-billing transactions. Google historically described a four-percentage-point reduction from the applicable service fee for alternative billing under the relevant program; that is a reduction in percentage points, not a promise that the remaining fee is zero. Exact treatment depends on the market and program. Google’s payments policy describes the adjustment, while its program and service-fee guidance sets out program conditions.

That distinction matters when reading claims about developers “avoiding the 30% cut.” A headline-sized commission figure is not a reliable description of every transaction: fees vary by program and transaction type, and an alternative payment route can still carry a Google service fee.

The 2022 Spotify pilot is not a complete description of Google Play billing policy in 2026. Google now documents multiple alternative-billing and user-choice programs, with requirements that vary by market, eligibility and implementation. Its program overview lists the United States, United Kingdom, European Economic Area, Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa and South Korea among markets with different programs. Developers in the relevant pilot markets were required to migrate to alternative-billing APIs by March 13, 2024. Google’s program overview describes market and technical distinctions.

The EEA also has a separate alternative-billing program that allows eligible developers to offer billing without Google Play Billing alongside it; that is distinct from a user-choice screen presenting both options. Google’s EEA guidance explains the distinction. Google announced further service-fee and billing-choice changes in 2026 with a staggered rollout, including different treatment for new and existing installs. Its 2026 changes announcement sets out that rollout.
For the United States specifically, Google’s documentation, updated July 22, 2026, says developers enrolled in the relevant alternative-billing program must begin reporting transactions and paying the applicable Play service fee on October 1, 2026. That date has passed; the documentation’s reporting requirement should not be confused with proof of Spotify’s current implementation. Google’s US program page states the date and requirement.
These Google policy pages establish the broader program landscape, but they do not verify that Spotify currently shows the original two-choice checkout in every country—or that it still offers that exact flow anywhere. Availability and screens can depend on Spotify’s implementation, a user’s market and the applicable Play program.
Quick Recap
How to avoid billing mistakes
- Check who is charging you. Use the subscription page, confirmation email and statement descriptor to identify Google Play or Spotify as the merchant.
- Cancel with the billing provider. Cancelling through the other company may not stop the recurring charge.
- Check for duplicate subscriptions. If you have signed up through both routes, review both accounts before assuming one cancellation ends both charges.
- Choose based on the tools you actually use. Centralized Play management, gift cards or Play Points may favor Google Play; a preferred Spotify payment method or direct account management may favor Spotify, if offered.
- Do not infer a discount from the payment route. Compare the displayed price and terms in your market before completing a purchase.
