Best VPN Deals in 2026: Where to Buy Legitimate Subscriptions and Save

Most VPNs sell subscriptions, not permanent keys. Compare legitimate buying channels, dated offers, upfront charges, renewals, and refund terms before you buy.

Short answer: You can buy legitimate VPN access from a provider’s official website, its app-store listing, or a retailer the provider authorizes. Most consumer VPNs sell subscriptions—not permanent “VPN keys.” Compare the full amount due now, the renewal price, taxes and refund rules before paying; be wary of unusually cheap lifetime codes and seller-provided account logins.

What does “VPN key” mean?

People use “VPN key” to mean several different things, but they are not interchangeable:

  • A subscription account: The usual way to buy a consumer VPN. You pay for access over a set period, often with automatic renewal.
  • An activation code or prepaid card: A code that may add subscription time to an account. Buy it only from the provider or a retailer the provider confirms is authorized.
  • Shared or resold credentials: A username and password supplied by a seller may be shared, compromised, or against the provider’s terms. It is not the same as owning your own subscription.
  • An unauthorized or stolen code: A code obtained through payment fraud or sold in breach of the provider’s terms may be invalidated, and support or refunds may be unavailable.
  • An encryption key: A technical component used by VPN software to protect a connection. It is not normally a consumer product to purchase.

Major services generally sell subscriptions rather than permanent unlock codes. NordVPN, for example, describes subscription plans with automatic renewal, introductory pricing, and a 30-day money-back guarantee; it also says prepaid cards may be available at selected retailers. Where to buy VPN access safely

  1. Start with the provider’s official website. This is the clearest route to current pricing, account ownership, support, renewal terms, and the provider’s own refund policy.
  2. Use an official app-store listing if it suits you. Apple, Google, Amazon, or another app store may handle billing and cancellations itself; prices, offers, and refund eligibility can differ from a direct purchase.
  3. Buy a prepaid card only from an authorized retailer. Confirm the retailer or card program with the VPN provider before paying. NordVPN says its prepaid cards may be sold in selected retail stores. NordVPN purchase options
  4. Treat deal sites as places to discover offers, not as proof of authorization. Follow the offer through to the provider’s official domain and check the price and terms at checkout.
  5. Avoid marketplace listings, forums, social media sellers, and “lifetime key” sites unless the provider explicitly authorizes them. A very low price does not establish that the code is legitimate, transferable, supported, or refundable.

How to compare VPN offers by their real cost

A headline price such as “$3.49 per month” may be an effective monthly equivalent, not a monthly bill. Long introductory plans commonly require a larger upfront payment, then renew at a higher rate. Calculate the cost over the period you expect to use the service, and inspect the checkout total.

  • Upfront charge: Record the full initial amount and the number of months it buys, including any free months.
  • Renewal: Note the renewal amount, billing interval, and date. An introductory offer is not a permanent rate.
  • Taxes and currency: The checkout total may differ from the advertised figure. NordVPN says sales tax may apply; Tom’s Guide notes that Surfshark taxes may be added at checkout. NordVPN pricing terms and Tom’s Guide’s Surfshark review
  • Refund conditions: Check the applicable guarantee, exclusions, country rules, and purchase channel. Do not assume an app-store purchase receives the provider’s standard refund terms.
  • Features you will actually use: Count device connections and check operating-system or router support. Separate the VPN’s value from extras such as password management, identity monitoring, or cloud storage.

For a simple comparison, divide the full first-term charge by the number of months of access, including free months. Then compare that effective cost with the renewal price—not with another provider’s introductory figure alone.

PIA refund information Buyers focused on a low long-term promotional price who are prepared to check renewal and refund terms carefully.

The figures are not a permanent ranking: a discounted first term can look cheaper while its renewal costs more, and a tier may include products you do not need. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup includes NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, and PIA among its mainstream choices, but that testing-based ranking is not a price comparison. Which type of plan fits your needs?

For the lowest long-term price

Compare the current official checkout totals for PIA, Surfshark, Proton VPN, and NordVPN’s entry tier. Secondary reports of very low prices are leads to verify, not guaranteed rates. Choose a long term only if you expect to use the service long enough to make the upfront payment worthwhile.

For a short trip or an uncertain commitment

A monthly plan or a free tier limits the amount you commit upfront, though monthly plans usually cost more per month and free plans may limit locations, features, data, or device use. Proton VPN offers a free version, but its feature set is not identical to paid plans. Proton VPN features

For a household with many devices

Compare simultaneous-device limits and router support rather than assuming one account covers every device without restriction. In the dated offers above, NordVPN listed up to 10 connections; ExpressVPN listed 10 for Basic, 12 for Advanced, and 14 for Pro.

For privacy-oriented buying

Read the provider’s privacy policy and look for independent reviews or audits, while distinguishing an audit from a provider’s own claim. Surfshark says its no-logs policy was verified by Deloitte and describes RAM-only servers. Surfshark’s security and privacy information Proton VPN lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, Quick Connect, and NetShield among its features. Proton VPN features A VPN does not make a user universally anonymous.

For streaming or travel

Check that the service has apps and payment options you can use, and review local rules where you plan to connect. Streaming access can vary by service, server, location, and enforcement changes; no deal should be treated as a guarantee that a particular platform will work.

Long-term, monthly, and free plans: the trade-offs

Plan type Why it can make sense What to check
Long-term introductory plan Often offers a lower effective monthly rate and may include extra months. Large upfront bill, automatic renewal, higher renewal price, and a refund window that may be much shorter than the subscription term.
Monthly plan Useful for temporary needs or testing with less commitment. Higher effective monthly cost and potentially different promotional or refund terms.
Free plan or trial Lets you test whether the service meets basic needs without buying an unauthorized code. Data, location, feature, streaming, or device limitations; privacy practices and monetization also matter.

Automatic renewal, refunds, and app-store billing

Before checkout, save the initial term, the renewal price shown, and the renewal date. Decide whether to keep automatic renewal enabled. NordVPN says canceling stops future renewal while access continues through the paid subscription period. NordVPN subscription terms

App-store billing can change who handles cancellation and refunds. PIA provides a concrete example: its support information says iTunes purchases do not qualify for its regular 30-day money-back guarantee. PIA refund eligibility Confirm the policy for your provider, country, and payment route before buying.

Paying with cryptocurrency is not a guarantee of anonymity. ExpressVPN says Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency options are available through BitPay and describes a 30-day refund policy for eligible first-time users; check its conditions before relying on that route. How to avoid a fake or unusable VPN code

  • Be skeptical of “lifetime,” “永久,” or one-time keys that the provider does not sell or recognize.
  • Do not accept seller-provided usernames and passwords as proof that an account is yours.
  • Check the seller’s domain character by character; imitation spellings can lead to fake checkout pages.
  • Confirm the code’s region, eligibility, transferability, and redemption process with the provider.
  • Require a receipt and readable refund terms. Be cautious if the seller asks for unnecessary identity details or insists on cryptocurrency.
  • Do not trust promises of guaranteed access to a streaming service or a price far below the provider’s own offers.

If a purchased code does not work

  1. Do not give the seller the password to an existing VPN account.
  2. Check the code’s characters and confirm it is valid for your country and account type.
  3. Contact provider support through its official website and ask whether the code and seller are authorized, and whether it is transferable and refundable.
  4. If the issue is not resolved, request a refund or dispute the payment through the original payment method, following its process.
  5. If you shared account credentials, change the password and enable multifactor authentication where available.
