To become Symfony certified, choose an exam version, study its official topic list, buy a voucher, schedule the remotely proctored test and pass. Symfony’s current listing covers Symfony 8.0: 75 questions across 15 topics in 90 minutes, in English. The voucher is listed at €250. The official award is called Symfony Certification, with successful candidates recognized as Advanced Developer or Expert Developer—not “Symfony Certified Engineer.”

Who can take the Symfony certification exam?

Symfony presents certification as a way for developers to demonstrate Symfony expertise. Its reviewed materials do not set a formal education or work-history requirement, but the FAQ says candidates must be at least 18. “Symfony Certified Engineer” is a common way to describe the goal; the official certification page calls it Symfony Certification. Check the official certification page and FAQ for current eligibility details.

What is on the Symfony certification exam?

Symfony 8 exam format and scope

The current Symfony 8 listing describes an English-language exam with 75 questions, 15 topics and a 90-minute time limit. Questions are true/false, single-answer or multiple-choice; you select answers rather than write explanations or code. The listed scope is Symfony 8.0 specifically, not Symfony 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4. The page also lists older exam versions, so verify the version you intend to take.

Symfony 8 topics to study

Use the official version-specific topic list as your checklist. The Symfony 8 syllabus includes PHP through PHP 8.4; HTTP and RFC 9110; Symfony architecture; controllers and routing; Twig; forms; validation; dependency injection; security; Messenger; Console; automated tests; and selected components: Cache, Clock, EventDispatcher, Filesystem, Finder, Mailer, Mime, Process, PropertyAccess and Serializer.

The listed exclusions are equally useful for prioritizing your preparation. Symfony 8 certification does not cover Symfony UX, Symfony AI, Doctrine or database topics, Monolog, third-party bundles and projects, AssetMapper, Webpack Encore, PHP Polyfills, unlisted Symfony components or third-party-service bridges. The FAQ puts it directly: “The exam does not support any persistence frameworks like Doctrine. The exam only focuses on the Symfony core concepts (including Twig).” See the official exam page for the full, current syllabus.

How to choose an exam version

There is no universal best version for every candidate. Compare the version’s exact syllabus and PHP baseline with the Symfony version you use or are learning, and decide whether the current Symfony 8.0 scope fits your goals and readiness. Symfony says candidates choose their exam version when scheduling, not when buying the voucher. The live exam page should guide your choice because older version exams have different content.

How should you prepare?

  1. Save the official syllabus for your chosen version. Make a checklist of included subjects and exclusions so you can direct your study time accordingly. If you choose Symfony 8, remember that the listed exam is specifically about Symfony 8.0.
  2. Refresh fundamentals with Symfony’s documentation. Its Getting Started material and quick tour provide a route into the framework; the documentation also points to a free video course and demo application for hands-on exploration. Start at Symfony documentation.
  3. Study behavior, not just API trivia. In a January 14, 2026 announcement, Symfony contributor Javier Eguiluz said the exam was revised to test understanding of how Symfony works rather than recall of method names and option spellings. Practice explaining component behavior and how concepts connect. Read the Symfony 8 certification announcement.
  4. Build or explore an application to connect the concepts. Symfony describes Symfony: The Fast Track as a quick application-building overview, from installation through production deployment. Treat it as a practical overview, not a complete, version-specific exam guide.
  5. Consider coaching only if its format suits you. SensioLabs lists Symfony 8 Certification Online Coaching as 15 sessions of 1.5 hours, in English, French or German, for €1,650. It is optional training, not an exam prerequisite; check the current course listing before enrolling.

How much does certification cost?

The Symfony exam page lists a €250 voucher. Symfony’s purchase page says vouchers are nonrefundable; its FAQ says a voucher is valid for one year from purchase. Those are current-page terms, not a promise that pricing or conditions will remain unchanged. Review the exam page, FAQ and purchase terms before paying.

If you fail, the purchase page describes a 30% discount using the previous voucher code after a recent failure; it cannot be combined with another offer. A retake requires another voucher. Confirm the live terms and eligibility before relying on the discount.

How do you schedule and take the exam online?

The exam is remotely proctored. You need a laptop or desktop, Google Chrome with the required exam extension, valid photo ID and a stable internet connection. Symfony’s FAQ recommends at least 1.5 Mbps upload speed. Screen and webcam activity are recorded; the FAQ says recordings of successful candidates are reviewed before being destroyed.

  1. Buy a voucher. Check the live price and terms on Symfony’s purchase page. You do not select the exam version at this point.
  2. Schedule the exam and select its version. Choose the version whose syllabus you prepared for. The voucher is valid for one year from purchase according to the FAQ.
  3. Prepare your testing space and equipment. Set up alone in a well-lit room, with no papers or additional devices available. Install or confirm the required Chrome extension and check your internet connection and photo ID.
  4. Follow the proctoring rules during the test. Do not use websites or applications during the exam. The webcam and screen are recorded as part of remote proctoring.

Reschedule before the original exam time. The FAQ says a late change, arriving 30 minutes late or failing to attend forfeits the voucher; it is not refunded or renewed. Read the FAQ for the latest attendance and rescheduling rules.

What happens after you pass?

Successful candidates receive an official PDF diploma and a SymfonyConnect badge on their public profile. Symfony lists two award levels: Advanced Developer and Expert Developer. It does not publish the number of correct answers required to pass, so there is no official score cutoff to plan around. The FAQ says existing certification standing does not need renewal; you may choose to sit a newer-version exam later.
