AWS Launched Its Second Cloud Region in India in Hyderabad

AWS’s second Indian cloud region, in Hyderabad, launched in November 2022. Here’s how it compares with Mumbai and what AWS’s 2026 investment announcements mean.

Yes. AWS launched its second infrastructure region in India, AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), on November 22, 2022. Mumbai was the first, opening in June 2016. The old “to launch” framing is no longer current: in 2026, Amazon and AWS announced further cloud and AI infrastructure investment in India, including Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Where is AWS’s second India region?

The region is AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), located in the Indian state of Telangana. AWS announced it in 2020 with a target of mid-2022, then launched it on November 22, 2022. AWS’s announcement describes the launch and its customer implications: AWS launches Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region.

Hyderabad followed AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai), which opened in June 2016. A region is a distinct geographic AWS infrastructure area; it is not simply another building within Mumbai’s region. AWS lists the India regions in its Regions and Availability Zones directory.

What the Hyderabad region means for customers

Availability Zones and resilience

Hyderabad launched with three Availability Zones (AZs). AWS describes AZs as infrastructure locations with independent power, cooling, and physical security, connected by redundant, low-latency networks. Applications designed to use multiple AZs can be made more resilient to a failure affecting one zone; simply choosing the Hyderabad region does not make an application highly available automatically. Customers still need to architect and test for the failures they want to withstand. AWS explains the region’s AZ design in its launch blog.

Latency and private connectivity

Hosting workloads in Hyderabad may reduce network distance for users and systems in or near the region, but actual latency depends on the user’s location, network route, application, and AWS service. AWS does not promise a particular response time for every customer.

For dedicated private connectivity, AWS announced in July 2025 that AWS Direct Connect capacity at STT Hyderabad DC1 had expanded to 100 Gbps. That is a capacity figure for the named Direct Connect site, not a guarantee of an individual customer’s throughput. Details are in the Direct Connect announcement.

Data residency and compliance

A Hyderabad region gives customers another place to deploy workloads and store data on AWS infrastructure in India. That can help with designs subject to location or compliance requirements, but using the region alone does not establish that an organization meets a law, regulation, contract, or internal policy. Customers must check the rules that apply to their data and services, and confirm that the specific AWS services they need are available in the region.

Hyderabad or Mumbai: how to choose

The choice depends on where users and connected systems are, what location requirements apply, and how the application should recover from an outage. The regions are separate deployment locations, but AWS service availability and capacity should be checked for each region rather than assumed to match.

Decision factor Hyderabad Mumbai
Geography Telangana; the newer of India’s two regions India’s first AWS region, opened in June 2016
Availability Zones Three at launch, according to AWS Check AWS’s current regional documentation for the configuration relevant to your workload
Latency May suit users and systems nearer Hyderabad; measure from actual networks May suit users and systems nearer Mumbai; measure from actual networks
Data-location needs India-based deployment option; verify the applicable requirements and service details India-based deployment option; verify the applicable requirements and service details
Disaster recovery A separate region from Mumbai that can be considered in a multi-region design A separate region from Hyderabad that can be considered in a multi-region design
Direct Connect 100 Gbps capacity announced at STT Hyderabad DC1 in July 2025 Site-specific capacity not stated in the cited Hyderabad announcement

For a multi-region recovery plan, teams need to decide what data and services to replicate, how to route traffic during a failure, and what recovery time and data-loss limits are acceptable. A second region provides an additional location, not automatic disaster recovery; the design, cost, failover process, and testing remain the customer’s responsibility.

What AWS and Amazon have announced about investment

The announced amounts refer to different projects and time periods; they should not be added together as if they described one investment commitment.

Announcement Amount and scope Attribution and timing
Hyderabad region More than $4.4 billion of investment through 2030; AWS estimated more than 48,000 full-time jobs on an average annual basis and approximately $7.6 billion in GDP contribution by 2030 AWS’s 2022 estimates for the Hyderabad Region: region launch announcement
India AI and cloud infrastructure An additional $13 billion, taking Amazon’s planned India investment to $48 billion for 2026–2030 Amazon’s June 2026 announcement: India investment announcement
AWS India cloud infrastructure plans More than $21 billion for 2026–2030 AWS/Amazon India’s 2026 announcement describes the plans as AWS cloud infrastructure investment: AWS India announcement

The $13 billion commitment is Amazon’s additional India-wide AI and cloud infrastructure investment, while the more-than-$21 billion figure is described as AWS’s India cloud infrastructure plans over 2026–2030. The earlier $4.4 billion estimate relates specifically to Hyderabad and was published in 2022. These are announced plans and estimates; construction schedules and capacity plans can change.

AWS also said in a 2023 announcement that it had trained more than four million people in India in cloud skills since 2017. That figure concerns training, not jobs created by the Hyderabad region: AWS cloud-skills training announcement.

Is AWS building another data center in Hyderabad?

AWS’s 2026 announcement describes deeper investment in Hyderabad and Telangana to support cloud and AI demand. An AWS executive referred to building sustainable cloud data center operations in the state. This supports the conclusion that AWS is expanding its infrastructure presence there; it does not, on its own, establish a specific new standalone region or provide a complete facility-by-facility construction schedule. The announcement is available from AWS/Amazon India.
