Google Cloud Storage Costs: What Changed and How Billing Works

Google’s notices describe staged historical price changes and separate BigQuery-related charges—not a new flat-rate Cloud Storage plan. Here’s what affects bills and how to estimate your usage.

Google has not announced a single fixed-price Cloud Storage plan that makes bills predictable. Its official notices instead describe historical price changes and separate BigQuery billing updates. Your bill still depends on storage class, location, operations, retrieval, replication, and data transfer—not just how many gigabytes you store.

What Google changed—and what it did not

Google’s official pricing notices do not describe a new flat-rate plan for Cloud Storage. They cover staged price adjustments in 2022 and 2023, followed by two separate billing notices for BigQuery reads from Cloud Storage. These events affect different charges and should not be treated as one new pricing plan.

October 1, 2022 and April 1, 2023: staged price updates

Google said initial updates for new products and SKUs took effect October 1, 2022; additional changes to existing products and SKUs took effect April 1, 2023, after Google extended the preparation period. The changes varied by storage class, operations, replication, and network transfer. Google also announced an increase in the qualifying Always Free internet data-transfer-out allowance from 1 GB to 100 GB per month per destination. These are historical changes, not a universal current price or plan. See Google’s pricing-change announcement and pricing FAQ.

February 21, 2025: previously unmetered BigQuery-related charges

Google said that, starting February 21, 2025, BigQuery users would see Cloud Storage retrieval charges when jobs read Nearline, Coldline, or Archive data, along with inter-region data-transfer charges where applicable. Google attributed the change to a billing bug that had prevented those charges from being metered. This notice concerns retrieval and inter-region transfer; it is not a general Cloud Storage subscription change. Details are in Google’s BigQuery release notes for February 21, 2025.

February 1, 2026: multi-region transfer for BigQuery reads

Google separately says multi-region network transfer fees apply beginning February 1, 2026 when a BigQuery job reads from a Cloud Storage multi-region bucket. The notice is relevant to users importing data into BigQuery from those buckets. Google suggests co-locating the bucket and BigQuery data as a possible way to reduce these transfer costs. Read Google’s BigQuery release notes for February 1, 2026.

Why Cloud Storage can cost more than its storage-per-GB rate

Cloud Storage bills can include multiple usage categories. The applicable rate depends on factors such as the bucket’s location, storage class, destination, and workload.

  • Data storage: The amount stored and its storage class affect the charge.
  • Data processing: Operations, applicable retrieval fees, and inter-region replication can add costs.
  • Network usage: Data transfer may be chargeable depending on where data moves and where it goes.
  • Anywhere Cache: Google lists this as a separate pricing category.

For data transfer, Google distinguishes free cases from chargeable movement and considers bucket and destination locations. A region and a multi-region are not automatically treated as the same location just because the region is geographically inside the multi-region. Check the current Cloud Storage pricing page for the relevant locations and rates.

An illustrative bill is not a universal quote

Google’s pricing example totals $1.19 for one month of 50 GB of Standard storage in us-east1, 10,000 Class A operations, 50,000 Class B operations, and 1 GB of outbound transfer, assuming no Always Free discounts. It illustrates how storage and activity combine; it is not a general price quote, and actual rates depend on the workload and applicable pricing. See Google’s pricing example and rate details.

What the Always Free allowance covers

Google’s current Cloud Storage pricing documentation lists these monthly Always Free amounts: 5 GB-months of Standard storage, 5,000 Class A operations, 50,000 Class B operations, and 100 GB of data transfer from North America to each qualifying Google Cloud data-transfer destination, subject to stated exceptions. The allowance applies in us-west1, us-central1, and us-east1; usage is aggregated across those regions, and Google says the limits may change. Eligibility and destination restrictions apply, so confirm them on the pricing page rather than assuming every bucket or transfer is covered.

How to estimate and monitor your bill

  1. Identify the workload and time period. Separate Cloud Storage usage from BigQuery jobs that read Cloud Storage data, and note the bucket location, storage class, and transfer destinations.
  2. Review actual usage by SKU. In Google Cloud Billing, open Reports or the Cost Table view, group costs by SKU, and filter for the relevant products and period. Google recommends these views for assessing affected usage and estimating SKU costs; consult the pricing FAQ.
  3. Check the applicable rates. Use the current regional pricing and location rules for storage, operations, retrieval, replication, and transfer. Do not rely on a historical 2022–2023 change notice as a current rate card.
  4. Compare the estimate with the bill. Investigate which SKUs account for the difference, especially retrieval and inter-region or multi-region transfer when BigQuery reads bucket data.
  5. Review contract terms. Google said some customers with fixed or floating discount commitment contracts signed or renewed before October 1, 2022 would not be affected until the contract ended. Whether that applies depends on your agreement and dates; verify with your billing terms and Google Cloud account team.

Ways to reduce avoidable Cloud Storage costs

There is no universally cheapest configuration established by these pricing materials. Compare options against your own use rather than choosing by the storage-per-GB figure alone.

  • Match storage class to retention and retrieval frequency; colder classes may have retrieval fees.
  • Choose a location based on resilience needs and where data is read or transferred.
  • Include operation volume, replication needs, transfer destinations, and data volume in the estimate.
  • For BigQuery reads from a multi-region bucket, consider whether co-locating the bucket and BigQuery data fits your architecture and reduces transfer costs.
  • Account for any applicable contract discount or commitment, and verify its terms.

Cloud Storage is not Google Drive or Google One

Cloud Storage is Google Cloud’s object-storage service, billed according to service usage and applicable rates. The changes described here do not establish a new consumer Google Drive or Google One plan.
