Wiz announced a $1 billion funding round at a $12 billion valuation on May 7, 2024, saying it would use the capital to hire, expand its products and pursue strategic acquisitions. The announcement was a growth and consolidation plan, not a disclosure of a specific pending deal. Wiz later became part of Google Cloud after Google completed its $32 billion acquisition in March 2026.
What Wiz announced in May 2024
The cloud-security company said Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Thrive Capital led the $1 billion round, with existing investors also participating. Wiz’s announcement described the transaction as a funding round and put the company’s financing valuation at $12 billion; it did not assign the round a conventional series label. Wiz’s announcement
Axios separately reported that the financing included a small secondary transaction for early employees and investors. Secondary sales provide liquidity to existing shareholders rather than putting that portion of the proceeds into the company, but Wiz’s announcement did not specify such a component. Axios Pro Rata
Why the round mattered
Founded in 2020, Wiz reached a $12 billion financing valuation roughly four years later, making it one of the most highly valued private cybersecurity companies at the time. The size of the round signaled investor appetite for cloud-security platforms and gave Wiz significant capital to pursue both internal growth and acquisitions. A private financing valuation is a point-in-time figure, not a guaranteed sale price or a measure of what every shareholder could realize.

For enterprise customers, the strategic question was whether Wiz could turn a broad cloud-security offering into a platform that reduced the need to buy and manage many separate tools. The funding announcement made that ambition explicit.
Why Wiz said it wanted to make acquisitions
Wiz argued that security teams were trying to consolidate sprawling collections of point products and that broader platforms could serve them better. It connected this shift to CNAPP—cloud-native application protection platform—a category of products that bring together visibility and security capabilities for cloud environments and applications. Wiz said acquisitions could help it “cover more ground in less time,” alongside hiring and product expansion. Wiz’s announcement

That strategy has a clear trade-off. Buying a specialist can add technology and expertise faster than building them internally, and may create opportunities to sell more capabilities to existing customers. But acquisitions also bring integration, product overlap and talent-retention risks. A company promising a simpler security platform can undermine that promise if acquired products remain disconnected or add complexity.
Acquisitions that show the strategy in practice
Wiz’s acquisition activity helps put the funding announcement in context. Its deal history included Raftt, announced in December 2023, and Gem Security, announced April 10, 2024, shortly before the funding round. Gem added cloud threat-detection expertise. After the round, Wiz announced its acquisition of Dazz on November 21, 2024; Dazz extended the company’s reach into application-security posture management and code-to-cloud remediation. These deals are evidence that acquisitions were part of Wiz’s platform-building approach, but they do not establish that the $1 billion round was earmarked for any one transaction.
Was SentinelOne a target?
Axios reported that Wiz considered a possible bid for SentinelOne but walked away after details leaked to the press. That is reported context, not an announced acquisition or confirmed formal bid. Wiz’s May 2024 funding announcement named no target, and SentinelOne was not acquired by Wiz. Axios

Google announced on March 18, 2025, that it had agreed to acquire Wiz in an all-cash transaction valued at $32 billion. Google completed the acquisition on March 11, 2026. Wiz joined Google Cloud while retaining its brand and multicloud positioning. Google said the business would continue helping customers secure cloud and hybrid environments across multiple cloud providers. Google’s acquisition announcement · Google’s completion announcement
The $32 billion acquisition value was substantially higher than the $12 billion valuation in the 2024 financing, but the figures describe different events and are not a simple investment-return calculation. They differ in timing and transaction structure, and the funding valuation and acquisition price are not directly interchangeable.

What the round does—and does not—tell buyers
A large financing round is a business signal, not proof that a security product suits a particular organization. Buyers evaluating Wiz or another cloud-security platform should compare multicloud coverage, workload discovery, identity-risk analysis, runtime protection, application-security remediation and AI-security capabilities. They should also assess deployment, data residency, compliance, integrations with existing security and IT systems, and contract and renewal terms.
Wiz is now part of Google Cloud, which may matter to procurement and integration decisions. That ownership does not automatically make Wiz the right choice—or mean it is bundled with Google Cloud services. The relevant test is how well its capabilities and terms fit the organization’s environment and security requirements.
