Retail is not heading toward an all-online future. The more likely model combines stores for touch, advice, discovery and brand experience with digital channels for search, personalisation, inventory visibility and flexible fulfilment. For shoppers, that means the best value may come from choosing the channel that fits each purchase—and checking the full cost, including delivery, returns and time.
Will everything move online?
No. Several major industry studies describe physical and digital retail as complementary rather than competing substitutes. McKinsey puts the distinction plainly: “Online and offline channels are no longer substitutes or competitors. Instead, they are increasingly complementary; online channels provide convenience to consumers, but offline channels offer important opportunities for consumer engagement, brand building, and pickup.” McKinsey’s store-network analysis supports that view.
The balance will differ by country, age group, product category, local infrastructure and retailer economics. A bulky item, fitted garment or product that needs demonstration has different channel economics from a repeat purchase that can be delivered cheaply.
What physical stores are for when online shopping is easy
Experience and product confidence
About 60% of consumers in PwC Netherlands’ 2024 Retail Monitor expected an experience in the physical store of the future. The finding comes from a Netherlands-focused report combining views from more than 50 European retailers with consumer data; the published summary does not state the consumer sample size. Advice and human service
Deloitte identifies associate guidance and product interaction as continuing reasons to visit a store. PwC reports that consumers value personal advice while also expecting self-checkout to be available. These preferences point to a mixed model: automation for speed where it helps, and trained employees for decisions that require explanation or judgement.
Discovery, community and entertainment
PwC’s global retail perspective reports that 34% of consumers expected in-store entertainment, 30% immersive digital experiences and 28% appointments with an adviser or personal shopper. Those are survey results reported by PwC, not a forecast that every retailer will provide each service. PwC’s global retail perspective.

What digital channels add
Convenience and flexible fulfilment
Digital shopping can make it easier to search a broad range, order at any time and choose delivery or pickup. Deloitte’s 2025 US retail outlook highlights real-time inventory visibility, a unified customer view and multiple fulfilment options as planned investment areas. Deloitte Insights.
For a household budget, convenience is valuable only after its price is clear. Compare the item price with delivery charges, membership fees, minimum-order rules, pickup costs and the time required to return an unsuitable item.
Availability customers can trust
Inventory accuracy is more than a technology feature: it affects whether a shopper makes a wasted trip or pays for an order that cannot be fulfilled. Deloitte’s store-reinvention analysis treats availability as a trust issue and links better store experiences with dependable product information. Deloitte’s analysis of retail stores.

How much shopping still happens in stores?
Different surveys measure different behaviours, so their figures should not be combined into one market share:
| Finding | Context and qualification |
|---|---|
| 80% of shopping still happens in physical stores | Estimate cited in Deloitte’s 2025 US Retail Industry Outlook; US context and report-cited figure, not independently validated here. |
| 43% shopped in-store weekly; 34% used mobile weekly | PwC Global Consumer Insights research reported in its retail perspective; question wording and sample details vary by survey. |
| 51% planned to buy online; 53% planned in-person purchases | PwC Holiday Outlook 2025; intentions can overlap, so these are not competing channel shares. |
PwC Netherlands also reported that 94% of retailers had more than three-quarters of their products available in physical stores in 2024. Around 25% expected to have no physical-store inventory by 2030. The latter is an expectation, not an observed outcome.
Three store models retailers are weighing
McKinsey describes three broad ways a location can support both walk-in shoppers and online orders. The right choice depends on demand, basket mix, space, labour, systems and fulfilment economics.

| Model | How it works | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Customer-facing store plus online picking | The normal sales floor remains, while employees pick online orders and prepare pickup. | Preserves the shopping experience, but picking can interfere with shoppers and congest checkout or service areas. |
| Hybrid store with dedicated pickup space | Part of the floor is reserved for collecting online orders and handling returns. | Can shorten handoff times, but reduces selling space and requires accurate staging, queues and staffing. |
| Dark store | The location is closed to customers and optimised for order preparation. | May improve picking efficiency at sufficient volume, but removes the experiential role and requires demand, delivery and infrastructure to support it. |
McKinsey warns that a shared queue for walk-in and pickup or return customers can lengthen waits, while visible picking can make a conventional shop feel like a warehouse. Those operational effects matter to customers even when the order began online.

Choose the channel by purchase risk
- Use a store first when fit, feel, durability or technical advice could prevent an expensive mistake.
- Use digital ordering when the product is familiar, the price is transparent and delivery or pickup is reliable.
- Use both when seeing an item in person reduces uncertainty but online stock, price or pickup is better.
Calculate total cost, not headline price
Before ordering, add delivery, expedited-service charges, return postage, restocking fees and any subscription needed for free shipping. For store pickup, include transport and the likelihood of an impulse purchase. A lower listed price is not automatically the lower-cost option.
Protect the value of returns
Flexible buying and returns are cross-channel expectations identified by Deloitte. Check the return window, condition rules, refund method and whether online purchases can be returned locally. A convenient return route can be worth more than a small initial discount.

Technology is useful only when it solves a defined problem
Retailers are exploring mobile services, self-checkout, screens, artificial intelligence and immersive experiences. The sources describe these as opportunities or planned investments, not proof that every technology improves service or pays for itself.
For shoppers, judge a feature by its outcome: does it show accurate stock, reduce waiting, make a comparison easier, provide useful advice or offer a genuinely convenient fulfilment choice? If not, it may add complexity without adding value.
Constraints that can slow the transition
- Legacy systems: Separate store, web, loyalty and inventory records make a unified customer and stock view difficult.
- Layout and labour: Picking, staging, returns and walk-in service compete for floor space and employee time.
- Volume and product economics: A dark store or dedicated pickup area needs enough orders and suitable basket sizes to justify its cost.
- Transition expense: Deloitte’s 2025 outlook notes operating pressure and transformation constraints; retailers may need to invest before benefits appear.
What to watch over the next few years
Retail’s direction will be visible in practical details rather than a single channel replacing the other: more reliable “available now” information, pickup and returns designed as core services, stores with clearer reasons to visit, and staff supported by digital tools rather than simply removed. PwC Netherlands asks whether there is still a future for the physical store; the evidence points to yes, but to stores with a more deliberate role.
For personal-finance decisions, the durable rule is simple: use digital convenience where it saves time and money, and use physical experience where it reduces uncertainty or adds service worth paying for. Recheck the total cost and the return path before choosing.
