Time Warner Cable opened an $82 million data center in Charlotte, North Carolina, on November 16, 2012. Contemporary reporting described a large facility for residential email and billing systems, employee applications, and business services. The figures below describe the project as reported at its opening; they do not establish the site’s present-day ownership or status.

What opened in Charlotte

DataCenterKnowledge reported that the 178,000-square-foot data center held 1,600 racks across four data halls, each measuring 12,000 square feet. The company also had a separate, four-story administration building on the campus measuring 103,500 square feet. These are reported 2012 figures, not independently audited measurements in the cited coverage. DataCenterKnowledge’s opening report and Fierce Network’s contemporary coverage described the facility’s scale.

What the data center was intended to support

At the time of the opening, the facility was reported to host systems supporting about 70 million residential emails a day, billing records for more than 15 million customers, and employee back-end applications. Those figures refer to workloads and customer records cited in 2012 coverage—not current email volumes, customer counts, or service levels.

Fierce Network identified the site as National Data Center East and connected it with residential services and business cloud services. Its coverage also discussed Time Warner Cable’s cloud strategy in the context of NaviSite, which the company had acquired in 2011. That was contemporary industry analysis of the company’s plans, not evidence of present-day services or strategy.

How the $82 million figure fits the broader investment

DataCenterKnowledge reported the data center’s cost as $82 million. It separately described a $101 million broader Charlotte expansion announced the previous summer. The larger figure covered the wider expansion, so it should not be presented as the data center’s price. The same report said 225 local jobs had been added and were filled by the facility’s opening.

What Time Warner Cable said about the project

In a statement quoted by DataCenterKnowledge, Carol Hevey, then Time Warner Cable’s executive vice president of operations, called the Charlotte location “one of just two national data centers.” That was the company’s characterization of its facilities at the time, rather than an independently established count.

What the opening-era figures do—and do not—tell you

The reported dimensions, workloads, investment, and staffing describe the project as presented in November 2012. They are useful for understanding the scale and intended role of the opening-era facility, but the cited contemporary coverage does not establish who owns or operates the site today, whether it remains active, or how its equipment and configuration may have changed.
