Yes—Spotify created a Car Thing refund process in May 2024. Owners had to contact Spotify Support and provide proof of purchase. The reported payment was the amount paid for the device, not a refund of Spotify Premium fees. Public information confirms that 2024 process, but does not establish that Spotify still accepts late claims now. If you are applying today, ask Spotify Support to confirm eligibility, deadlines and documentation before assuming a refund is available.
Why Spotify shut down Car Thing
Spotify launched Car Thing in the United States on February 22, 2022, as a dedicated in-car interface for Spotify. It combined a touchscreen, physical controls and voice commands, and required a Spotify Premium subscription, a smartphone and mobile data. The launch price was $89.99, according to Spotify’s announcement.
The product was discontinued roughly two years later. Spotify told owners that the service supporting existing units would be disabled, rather than leaving the hardware as a general-purpose Bluetooth controller or offline player. Contemporary reports differed on the shutdown date: 9to5Google reported December 9, 2024, while a contemporaneous Techmeme roundup cited December 4, 2024. Both dates are past.
Owners objected that a recently purchased device would become unusable. Reporting also connected the decision with a class-action lawsuit alleging that customers were misled by the sale of a product that would later be disabled. Those are allegations by plaintiffs, not a court finding that Spotify violated the law.

What Spotify’s refund offer actually meant
The reported May 2024 change was a customer-by-customer refund process—not an automatic payment to every owner. Customers were directed to contact Spotify Support and provide proof of purchase. Approved claims could be refunded for the amount paid for the Car Thing, according to 9to5Google’s report.
That distinction matters. Spotify did not publicly promise every owner a refund, and the available report does not establish a universal entitlement, a public online claim form or a permanent policy.

Who was eligible?
Proof of purchase was the clearest reported requirement. The available coverage does not publish a complete eligibility checklist. It does not settle whether Spotify accepted:
- Only original purchasers, or also people who bought a unit secondhand.
- Purchases made directly from Spotify versus purchases from another retailer.
- A serial number as a substitute for a receipt.
- Claims for taxes, shipping, mounts or other accessories.
- Claims from customers whose Premium subscription had ended.
- Claims outside the United States.
- Requests submitted after a formal deadline.
A secondhand owner may have difficulty because the reported process focused on proof of purchase, but possession alone was not identified as sufficient. If you lost a receipt, contact Support anyway and ask whether Spotify can locate the order or accept alternative records; the sources do not say what substitutes were approved.

How to ask Spotify about a late claim
The following is practical preparation, not a guarantee that Spotify will approve a 2026 request:
- Find the original Spotify order email, retailer invoice, receipt or payment record. A bank statement may show that money was spent without identifying the item.
- Record the Car Thing serial number, photograph the device if useful, and gather the Spotify account details associated with the purchase.
- Use Spotify’s official Support contact options.
- State clearly that you are requesting a Car Thing hardware refund, not a refund for a Premium subscription charge.
- Provide proof of purchase when Support requests it.
- Ask Support to confirm in writing whether late claims are accepted, the eligible amount, the refund method, any return or disposal requirement and any deadline.
- Save the case number and every message. If the request is rejected, ask for the specific reason and whether an escalation review is available.
The available evidence does not confirm a current Car Thing form, claims administrator, guaranteed payout or open claim window. Spotify’s ordinary refund page concerns subscription billing and does not establish the rules for this hardware process: Spotify’s refund policy.

How much could the refund be?

What if Spotify rejects the request?
Ask Support to explain the decision and preserve the written response. You can request escalation, but there is no evidence that escalation guarantees payment. A payment-card dispute may also be unavailable because ordinary dispute windows often expire long before a product shutdown; check directly with the card issuer or payment provider rather than assuming it remains an option. The lawsuit context does not itself promise an individual recovery.
Can Car Thing be used now?
Official Spotify functionality was reported to end when the company disabled the service. The researched reporting does not verify a supported post-shutdown Bluetooth-controller mode, and it provides no basis for treating firmware hacks or unofficial projects as reliable replacements. Resetting the unit, reinstalling Spotify or pairing another phone should not be expected to restore Spotify’s service.
That makes a used Car Thing a poor purchase if you expect normal operation. Any unofficial modification is separate from Spotify’s refund process and may carry its own hardware, software and account risks.
What the evidence establishes—and what it does not
