No evidence here confirms that either price was still available on August 16, 2026, so treat the figures below as the documented promotion—not a live offer.
The body-only Sony A7 IV was listed at $1,998, while the body-only A7R V was $3,298. The A7 IV is the more sensible choice for most hybrid shooters; the A7R V earns its premium when 61-megapixel files, heavy cropping or large-format output directly support your work.

Engadget called both prices all-time lows and reported that Sony confirmed the A7R V price was its lowest ever. Those claims apply to the new, U.S. body-only promotion reported on that date; they do not establish the lowest price across every country, used listing, bundle or future sale. The A7 IV reduction calculated from the listed prices is $701.99. The A7R V reduction is $901.99, so “about $902 off” is more precise than the article’s separate $898 wording.
The deal article’s URL and image caption refer to “A7R IV,” but its text, price and specifications concern the A7 IV. This article uses the model name supported by the body copy and Sony’s specifications.

Sony A7 IV: the balanced buy
Sony’s specifications list a 35mm full-frame sensor with approximately 33.0 effective megapixels, E-mount compatibility, RAW recording and five-axis sensor-shift stabilization. Engadget’s deal coverage also notes 4K 60p video. See the official A7 IV specifications.
Why it fits more buyers
- 33MP provides ample detail for portraits, travel, weddings, events and most commercial or online delivery.
- Files are easier to store, back up and edit than 61MP originals.
- Stills and video capabilities are balanced, making it a practical single-body system.
- At the reported price, more of the budget remains for a suitable lens, cards and storage.
Choose the A7 IV if you need one camera for photography and video, are buying your first full-frame body, or would rather put the price difference toward glass.

Sony A7R V: the resolution specialist
The A7R V uses a 61MP full-frame sensor and supports RAW and HEIF capture plus five-axis stabilization, according to Sony’s official specifications. Engadget reports up to 10 frames per second, advanced subject recognition, improved stabilization over the A7R IV, and 8K and 10-bit video options.
Where the extra cost makes sense
- Commercial, studio, product, landscape and architecture work where fine detail is the deliverable.
- Wildlife or editorial shooting that requires substantial cropping.
- Large prints or assignments where a 61MP source provides useful finishing latitude.
- Users who can also fund high-quality lenses, fast cards, expanded storage and reliable backups.
High resolution does not prevent motion blur: subject movement and camera shake still determine whether a frame is sharp. It also places greater demands on lenses; inexpensive or older optics may not exploit the sensor’s potential.

A7 IV versus A7R V in practical terms

The A7R V is not automatically the better purchase. Its advantage is specialized: more pixels, more cropping room and a higher-end stills workflow. For ordinary travel, portraits, events and web video, the A7 IV’s lower cost and lighter file load are often more valuable.
What “body only” means
Neither advertised price included a lens. Both cameras use Sony E-mount lenses, so a first-time buyer must add one before taking photographs.

Budget for the complete system
- Lens: a standard zoom for general work, a fast prime for portraits or low light, a wide-angle lens for landscapes and architecture, or a telephoto for wildlife and sports.
- Memory cards: capacity and sustained write speed matter, especially for 61MP stills and high-bitrate video.
- Power: an extra NP-FZ100 battery is useful for long sessions. Sony’s U.S. A7 IV listing includes the battery and a USB-A-to-USB-C cable; the A7R V listing includes the battery and BC-QZ1 charger. Packages can vary by region.
- Storage and backup: the A7R V’s larger files can require more cards, computer space, backup drives and processing time.
- Protection: a bag, spare card and an appropriate protection plan may be sensible for an expensive kit.
Check the exact SKU before paying: kit versions can look similar to body-only listings. Also verify whether the seller is authorized, whether the item is new, used or refurbished, and whether Sony’s local warranty applies. Marketplace and gray-market prices may have different return and support terms.

Black Friday links can later redirect, show another configuration or display no stock. Since no current August 2026 listing is established here, do not assume $1,998 or $3,298 is available today. A future Sony or retailer promotion may repeat or beat those figures.
Which camera should you buy?
Pick the A7 IV when:
- You shoot stills and video in roughly equal measure.
- About 33MP is sufficient for your delivery and cropping needs.
- You want lower storage costs and a simpler editing workflow.
- You need budget left for a lens and accessories.
- Your work is mainly events, weddings, portraits, travel or online video.
Pick the A7R V when:
- Maximum resolution is central to paid work.
- You routinely crop aggressively or produce large prints.
- Advanced subject recognition and high-end stills performance justify the premium.
- You can afford the lenses, cards, storage and backup that a 61MP workflow demands.
Before comparing a newer A7-generation body with either model, verify its current specifications and price separately; the available deal report does not establish that comparison.
