The headline refers to an Avis Rent A Car System LLC cyberattack in August 2024—not a new 2026 breach. Avis said an unauthorized party accessed a business application between August 3 and August 6, 2024, and state breach records list 299,006 affected people. Potentially exposed data included identity, driver’s-license and payment-card information. The official settlement website listed June 21, 2026, as the claim deadline; that date has passed.
What happened in the Avis breach?
Avis Rent A Car System LLC said an unauthorized third party accessed one of its business applications. The public notices describe access to that application, not a confirmed compromise of every Avis reservation, payment or customer system.
| Event | Date or detail |
|---|---|
| Unauthorized access | August 3–6, 2024 |
| Avis discovered the incident | August 5, 2024 |
| Avis determined personal information was obtained | By August 14, 2024 |
| Consumer notices | Dated around September 5, 2024 |
The Maine Attorney General filing records the four-day incident period and the affected-person count. Avis’s notice says it ended the unauthorized access, investigated with cybersecurity specialists, notified relevant authorities and added safeguards to the affected application. The filing does not publicly identify the attacker, the initial-access method or whether ransomware or a ransom payment was involved.

How many people were affected?
The official Maine filing lists 299,006 people nationwide. It also identifies 685 Maine residents; a Delaware Attorney General database entry lists 921 Delaware residents. “Hundreds of thousands” is therefore a rounded description, not an estimate.
The filing names Avis Rent A Car System LLC. That does not establish that every customer of Avis Budget Group, Budget, Payless or another related brand was included. The relevant population is the group Avis notified as affected.
What information may have been exposed?
The settlement FAQs and breach notices say the categories could vary by person. Potentially involved information included:
- Full name
- Mailing address
- Email address
- Telephone number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s-license information or number
- Credit-card number
- Credit-card expiration date
These notices do not establish that every affected person had every field exposed. They also do not state that CVV codes, PINs, bank-account credentials, complete transaction histories or passwords were taken. Possession of a driver’s-license number or card details creates a fraud risk, but it is not proof that identity theft or unauthorized transactions occurred.

What protection did Avis offer?
The original notice offered notified individuals one year of Equifax credit monitoring and identity-restoration services. Its enrollment deadline was December 31, 2024, so that specific complimentary offer should not be treated as currently available. Avis also said it reviewed security monitoring and controls and developed a plan to enhance protections.
What lawsuit and settlement followed?
The litigation is In re: Avis Rent A Car System, LLC Security Incident Litigation, Case No. 2:24-cv-09243, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The lawsuit alleges that Avis’s security failures allowed personal information to be exfiltrated. Avis denies wrongdoing; a settlement resolves the claims and is not an admission of liability or a court finding that Avis violated a law.
The official settlement website said eligible class members could seek reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket losses of up to $5,000, along with other benefits described in the long-form notice and claim materials. That figure was a ceiling, not a guaranteed payment. A claimant needed a valid claim and qualifying documentation, and payments could be reduced pro rata if approved claims exceeded available funds. Settlement administration and court approval also affect distribution.
Settlement documents and FAQs are available at the official FAQs and the documents page.

Is it still possible to file an Avis breach claim?
The official website listed June 21, 2026 as the deadline to submit a claim. That deadline has passed. The available materials confirm that a final-approval hearing was scheduled for July 28, 2026, but they do not verify the court’s final ruling.
If you believe you were affected or submitted a claim:
- Visit the official settlement site directly, rather than using a link in an unsolicited email.
- Look for post-deadline instructions, final-approval information, distribution notices or administrator contact details.
- Keep your breach letter, claim confirmation and supporting receipts.
- Do not assume a late claim is accepted unless the administrator or court posts an explicit extension or instruction.
What affected consumers should do now
1. Preserve your notice and records
Keep the Avis letter or email. It may identify the data categories involved, a rental or reference number, and settlement-identification information. Save claim confirmations and documentation of any loss.
2. Check your credit reports and accounts
Use the official, free site AnnualCreditReport.com to review reports for unfamiliar accounts, hard inquiries, address changes or collection activity. Examine card and bank statements for transactions you do not recognize, and contact the issuer through the number on the card or its official website.

- Personal Information Protection: there are 4 pieces of address blocker roller stamps in 2 different sizes, and 5 pieces of 1.5 ml inks, a total of 9 pieces. Mainly applied to hide information such as social security numbers, bank statements, billing addresses, shipping addresses, tax documents and so on, protecting your personal information
- Re Inking Unlimitedly: the information blocker stamp can cover information of the length about 100 meters. And each security stamper roller has an oil hole, so you don't have to worry about you having to throw away the roller stamps when the ink runs out. They can be refilled with oil for repeated use, saving time and energy
- Cover Fast: our identity protection rollers come in 2 different sizes, and you can choose different sizes according to different areas of information to cover large amounts of private information in a fast and clean way, avoiding identity theft and rejecting privacy disclosure harassment
- Easy to Use: just remove the lid on the ID stamp blocker roller and open it, and then gently slide it on the place where the information needs to be covered. It is suitable for most ordinary paper with black words, and can protect your personal privacy in time
- Save Time and Energy: compared with the shredder, the personal confidential stamp has a small size, easy to carry, can be applied anytime and anywhere. Compared to the marker, it covers a larger area and can be quickly covered with a single swipe. There is no need to worry about whether you can not protect your privacy in time
3. Consider a credit freeze
A freeze at each major credit bureau can block many new-account applications using your information. It is generally a stronger preventive step against new-credit fraud than monitoring alone. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s guidance is at consumerfinance.gov. A fraud alert is another option when appropriate, but it does not provide the same control as a freeze.
4. Change reused passwords
The public breach descriptions do not say that passwords were exposed. Reusing a password nevertheless creates a separate account-takeover risk. Change reused credentials, use unique passwords and turn on multifactor authentication where available.
5. Expect impersonation attempts
Scammers may pose as Avis, Equifax, a settlement administrator, an attorney or a bank. Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, a full Social Security number or payment information in response to an unsolicited message. Type the known website address yourself and verify contact details independently.
6. Report suspected identity theft
Use IdentityTheft.gov for federal recovery guidance and reporting steps. Monitoring services can alert you to some activity, but they cannot prevent phishing, account takeover, tax or benefits fraud, or misuse outside the databases they monitor.

What remains unknown?
Public notices do not establish:
- Who carried out the intrusion
- The vulnerability or initial-access technique
- Whether ransomware was used or a ransom was paid
- Whether stolen data was publicly posted
- Whether fraudulent transactions or identity theft resulted
- Whether every person counted was an active renter during August 3–6, 2024
Those limits matter: “personal information was obtained” describes the incident’s reported scope, not a finding that every listed person suffered misuse.
Should you pay for identity monitoring?
Free steps—freezing credit, reviewing reports and statements, changing reused passwords and filtering phishing—should come first. Paid services can add alerts or restoration assistance, but they are optional and do not replace a freeze.
| Service | Use and qualification |
|---|---|
| Equifax | Relevant to the original Avis offer; the one-year enrollment deadline passed in 2024. |
| Experian | Offers monitoring and identity-protection products; features and pricing vary by plan. |
| TransUnion | Provides credit-file and identity monitoring; compare alerts, restoration terms and cancellation rules. |
| Aura or Norton LifeLock | Paid bundles that may be broader than this incident requires; neither is necessary to pursue settlement benefits. |
