Tokio Marine Group led the round. MetLife Next Gen Ventures, Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Berhad, and other existing and new shareholders also participated; MetLife did not lead the financing. The Series B later grew to $246 million, and bolttech’s next financing valued it at $2.1 billion in 2025.
What bolttech announced in May 2023
The announcement described an up-round: investors priced bolttech at $1.6 billion while providing $196 million of new financing. The announcement date was May 17, 2023, and the transaction was associated with bolttech’s Series B. TechCrunch’s report identifies Tokio Marine Group as the lead investor.
MetLife invested through MetLife Next Gen Ventures, while Khazanah Nasional Berhad and other existing and new shareholders joined the round. MetLife’s participation should not be confused with lead-investor status.
A valuation is the price investors assign to the company in a financing transaction. It is not the same as revenue, profit, assets under management or the amount raised. The $196 million was capital invested; $1.6 billion was the implied financing valuation.

What bolttech actually does
Bolttech is an embedded-insurance and protection-technology platform, not simply a consumer insurance company. Its B2B2C model connects insurers with distribution partners and consumers. Depending on the market and product, bolttech can provide technology, distribution, brokerage, program-management and related insurance services.
Embedded insurance in plain English
Embedded insurance presents coverage inside an existing purchase or service journey instead of requiring a separate insurance-shopping process. Examples include:
- Offering smartphone protection while a customer buys a device.
- Displaying travel coverage during a flight or travel booking.
- Surfacing motor insurance inside a banking, financial-services or commerce app.
- Selling protection plans through a retailer or telecommunications provider.
The commercial proposition is distribution: customers see relevant coverage where the underlying purchase or risk already exists. The insurer supplies risk capacity and underwriting; the partner supplies customer access; the platform helps connect the systems, products and transaction.

How large bolttech said it was in 2023
In the 2023 coverage, bolttech reported the following operating reach. These are company-reported platform metrics, not independently audited revenue or premium figures:
| Metric | 2023 company-reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution partners | More than 700 | Retailers, e-commerce companies, banks, fintechs, telecommunications companies and other channels |
| Insurance providers | 230 | Insurers connected to the platform |
| Products | Approximately 6,000 | Insurance or protection products available through its network |
| Annualized quoted premiums | Approximately $55 billion | The value of quotes flowing through the platform on an annualized basis—not revenue, written premiums or profit |
| Employees | About 1,500 | Company-reported headcount at the time |
| Geographic presence | Asia, Europe and all 50 U.S. states | Availability, licensing and product responsibilities can differ by jurisdiction |
These figures indicate network scale, but they do not establish profitability, customer retention, loss ratios or unit economics.
What the Series B was intended to fund
According to the 2023 reporting, bolttech planned to invest the financing in its insurance and distribution technology, including:
Rank #3
- Healthy Paws customers can:
- Submit a claim from anywhere with no claim form
- Check the status of claims
- Manage their pet policy online
- Quoting and purchasing experiences.
- Claims automation and fraud detection.
- Inventory management.
- Advanced analytics.
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning.
- Computer vision, generative AI and natural-language processing.
- Robotic process automation.
These were planned investment areas, not evidence that every capability had already been deployed commercially or that AI had replaced claims, underwriting or fraud teams.
The Series B later reached $246 million
In September 2023, bolttech announced that a $50 million investment from LeapFrog Investments expanded the stated Series B total to $246 million. That update is why the May headline should be read as the initial $196 million financing milestone, not necessarily the final size of the round. Bolttech’s announcement gives the expanded total.

The latest financing milestone identified here is the June 2025 Series C. It is not a guarantee of bolttech’s live 2026 private-market value; a newer financing, secondary transaction or company disclosure would be needed to establish that.
How bolttech’s platform changed by 2025
By the Series C close, bolttech reported around 700 distribution partners, more than 230 insurers, over 6,500 products and approximately $65 billion in annualized quoted premiums across more than 35 markets in Asia, Europe, North America and Africa. TechCrunch’s 2025 report and bolttech’s announcement attribute these figures to the company. The increase from roughly $55 billion to $65 billion is a change in quoted-premium volume, not proof of equivalent revenue or written premium.
Bolttech said Series C proceeds would support platform capabilities, research and development, data analytics, AI, international expansion and further growth in Africa and North America. It also announced a joint venture with Sumitomo to offer embedded-insurance programs and related services to partners in Asia.

Why investors may have backed the model
Insurance distribution is fragmented. Retailers, banks, telecom companies and digital platforms already have customer traffic but may lack the systems, insurer relationships and compliance infrastructure needed to offer protection products. A platform such as bolttech aims to reduce that integration burden by connecting those channels with multiple insurers and products.
The model still has substantial trade-offs:
- Partner dependence: Distribution can disappear if a retailer, bank, telecom company or platform changes strategy.
- Regulatory complexity: Licensing, product approval, disclosures, consumer-protection rules and claims obligations vary by country and product.
- Customer ownership: The distribution partner may control the customer relationship, limiting bolttech’s direct brand visibility.
- Integration work: Each insurer and channel can have different underwriting, pricing, claims, data and compliance requirements.
- Competition: Partners can build insurance infrastructure themselves or use traditional insurers, brokers and competing technology providers.
- Scale versus economics: Partner counts, product counts and quoted premiums do not by themselves demonstrate durable margins or profitability.
TechCrunch reported that bolttech viewed both traditional insurers and technology providers as competitors, while potential partners could also choose to build systems internally. Read the 2025 report.
How to interpret the headline accurately
- Read $196 million as the May 2023 financing amount. It was tied to the Series B announcement, not a measure of bolttech’s revenue or total company assets.
- Read $1.6 billion as a transaction valuation. It reflected investor pricing at that financing event, not a permanent or independently audited measure of worth.
- Attribute the lead correctly. Tokio Marine led; MetLife Next Gen Ventures participated.
- Use $246 million for the later Series B total. LeapFrog’s $50 million investment expanded the round.
- Use $2.1 billion for the later disclosed financing benchmark. Bolttech’s June 2025 Series C closed at that valuation.
- Do not turn quoted premiums into revenue. Annualized quoted premiums represent quote volume flowing through the platform and can differ materially from policies sold, premiums written and bolttech’s own income.
Bottom line
Bolttech’s $196 million Series B announcement was a significant 2023 milestone for an embedded-insurance infrastructure company. Tokio Marine was the lead investor, with MetLife Next Gen Ventures, Khazanah and other shareholders participating. The Series B later reached $246 million, and bolttech’s next completed financing in June 2025 raised $147 million at a $2.1 billion valuation. For readers assessing the story today, those later events—not the original $1.6 billion headline alone—provide the more current funding context.
