X then withdrew its claims against Twitch without prejudice in May, after a judge rejected the proposed nine-month stay. There was no public finding that Twitch violated antitrust law, paid X, resumed advertising on the platform, or admitted wrongdoing. The broader lawsuit later ended on March 26, 2026, when the court dismissed the remaining claims—largely with prejudice—but that ruling was not a merits decision against Twitch.
The short version
X sued the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), its Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) initiative, and a group of advertisers over what X described as a coordinated decision to reduce or stop buying ads on the platform after Elon Musk acquired Twitter. Twitch was added as a defendant in a November 2024 amended complaint.
On April 7, 2025, X told the federal court that it and Twitch had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) resolving the claims against Twitch. The filing said the agreement depended on unspecified conditions being completed by December 31, 2025, and proposed a status report or dismissal filing around January 10, 2026. The terms were not attached or otherwise made public. (April 7, 2025 court filing)
The judge did not leave the case paused for nine months. X withdrew the Twitch claims in May 2025, without prejudice. That removed Twitch from the active case but did not decide whether Twitch had participated in an unlawful boycott. (MediaPost report)

What X and Twitch actually agreed to
The only publicly described instrument was an MOU, not a published, comprehensive settlement agreement. X’s motion said the parties had reached an agreement “in principle” subject to conditions, but did not identify those conditions.
What the filing confirms
- The agreement covered X’s claims against Twitch.
- The conditions were to be satisfied by December 31, 2025.
- The parties contemplated a status report or dismissal notice on or about January 10, 2026.
- Twitch supported the requested stay through counsel, even though it had not formally appeared in the case.
What remains undisclosed
- Any payment by Twitch to X.
- Any promise to resume or increase advertising on X.
- Any change to Twitch’s brand-safety or advertising policies.
- Any admission of liability, conspiracy, or antitrust violations.
- Confidentiality, non-disparagement, or other private terms.
Consequently, “X reached a deal with Twitch” is supported by the filing. “Twitch paid to settle,” “Twitch admitted conspiring,” and “Twitch agreed to return its advertising” are not established by the public record. Contemporary reporting also said the companies did not immediately provide substantive comments. (Reuters report via Investing.com)
Why X sued Twitch
X’s amended complaint alleged that WFA and GARM helped coordinate advertisers’ responses to Musk’s takeover. X characterized advertisers’ collective reduction or withdrawal of spending as a group boycott that violated Section 1 of the Sherman Act, the federal law governing agreements that restrain trade. It sought damages and injunctive relief and alleged that the boycott cost it billions in advertising revenue. Those are allegations in X’s complaint, not findings by a court. (Amended complaint)

According to the complaint and reporting about it, Twitch referred to industry brand-safety standards and reduced advertising purchases outside the United States after November 2022. X used those facts to place Twitch within the broader alleged coordination. Twitch was not named in X’s original August 2024 filing; it was added in a later amended complaint in November 2024. What GARM and the WFA were alleged to have done
The WFA operated GARM as an industry initiative focused on brand-safety and ad-placement standards. X alleged that GARM-related communications and shared standards enabled advertisers to act together against X, including by assessing whether the platform met safety criteria and sharing information about advertising plans.
The defense position, as reflected in public court materials and reporting, was that the standards were voluntary and advertisers independently decided where to place ads. The legal question was therefore not whether an advertiser had to buy ads on X. It was whether coordinated conduct among advertisers and an industry group amounted to an unlawful restraint of trade.

Why the proposed stay failed
X’s April motion asked the court to keep the Twitch dispute on hold while the MOU’s conditions were completed. The proposed pause would have extended into January 2026. Judge Jane Boyle reportedly found it inefficient to keep a dormant matter on the docket for roughly nine months after the parties said they had reached an agreement.

- April 7, 2025: X filed an agreed motion to stay the claims against Twitch.
- April 2025: The court rejected the proposed extended stay.
- May 2025: X withdrew the Twitch claims without prejudice.
- March 26, 2026: The court resolved the remaining broader lawsuit.
“Without prejudice” means the withdrawal was not a final merits judgment. In theory, X retained the ability to bring the claims again, although the public filings do not show that it did so.

On March 26, 2026, Judge Boyle issued a memorandum opinion and order addressing defendants still in the case. The court:
- Denied WFA’s motion to dismiss.
- Dismissed claims against Shell International, Lego A/S, Nestlé S.A., and Ørsted Services without prejudice for lack of personal jurisdiction.
- Granted the remaining defendants’ motion to dismiss for failure to state a claim.
- Dismissed X’s claims against those remaining defendants with prejudice.
- Denied X leave to replead.
The court concluded that X had not plausibly alleged conduct restraining competition sufficient to state a Section 1 Sherman Act claim. (March 26, 2026 opinion and order)

What the public record does—and does not—show
Established
- X alleged Twitch participated in a broader advertising boycott.
- X and Twitch signed a conditional MOU.
- The proposed stay was rejected.
- X withdrew the Twitch claims without prejudice.
- The broader antitrust case later failed at the pleading stage for defendants still subject to a merits ruling.
Not established
- That Twitch paid X.
- That Twitch resumed advertising on X.
- That Twitch changed its safety standards because of the agreement.
- That Twitch admitted an illegal conspiracy.
- That Twitch “won” a court ruling clearing it, or that the March 2026 order dismissed Twitch on the merits.
Bottom line
Twitch avoided publicly litigating X’s boycott allegations after the companies reached a private, conditional MOU in April 2025. Because the proposed stay was rejected, X removed the claims in May without prejudice. The agreement’s consideration and conditions remain unknown. The broader case’s March 2026 dismissal rejected X’s antitrust pleading against remaining defendants, but it does not reveal what Twitch gave X or decide whether Twitch’s conduct was unlawful.
