Apple’s Gemini Deal: What It Really Means for Siri Privacy

Apple says Google may provide Gemini technology and cloud capacity while Private Cloud Compute keeps protected Siri request contents inaccessible and deletes them after processing. The distinction is important: data may reach Google-operated infrastructure without becoming readable to Google.

Short answer: Apple is using Google’s Gemini technology and Google Cloud capacity for parts of its next-generation Apple Intelligence system, but Apple says Private Cloud Compute keeps the contents of protected Siri requests inaccessible to both Google and Apple and deletes them after processing. That does not mean Siri never communicates with Google-operated infrastructure: Apple says some demanding workloads run on Google Cloud systems.

The practical distinction is infrastructure versus readable data. Google may supply models and the “engine room,” while Apple says its cryptographic and software controls form the privacy boundary around your request.

What Apple and Google actually agreed to

On January 12, 2026, Apple and Google announced a multiyear collaboration. Apple’s next-generation foundation models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, supporting future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri. The companies’ announcement is available at Google’s announcement.

This is not the same as installing the public Gemini app as Siri’s default assistant. It is also separate from Apple’s optional ChatGPT integration, which Apple documents as a distinct pathway.

Does Siri data go to Google?

Some Siri-related processing may run on Google infrastructure. Apple’s June 8, 2026 disclosure says demanding Apple Intelligence workloads can run on Google Cloud systems using NVIDIA GPUs. Apple says those systems are part of an expanded Private Cloud Compute (PCC) environment, rather than an ordinary consumer Gemini API request.

Question Best-supported answer
Can Siri use Google-operated infrastructure? Yes. Apple says some complex workloads run on Google Cloud systems.
Does Google receive a normal Gemini consumer prompt? Apple presents the flow as protected Private Cloud Compute, not the Gemini app or a standard consumer account.
Can Google read the request? Apple says PCC is designed to prevent Google, including infrastructure operators, from accessing request contents.
Does Apple retain the request? Apple says PCC deletes user data after fulfilling the request and does not retain it in logs or debugging systems.
Is every Siri request processed on an iPhone? No. Apple says more complex requests can be sent to PCC.
Could a third-party extension follow different rules? Yes. Apple separately identifies requests sent to ChatGPT.

So “Google gets nothing” is too broad. The more accurate statement is that Google may operate the underlying facilities while Apple says the protected contents are technically inaccessible and not retained.

How Private Cloud Compute is supposed to protect a request

On-device routing comes first

Apple Intelligence first determines whether a task can be completed locally. If it can, the request remains on the device. If the task needs a larger model, only information relevant to that request is sent to PCC. Apple describes this flow in its iPhone user guide and privacy policy.

“On-device first” does not mean every interaction stays local. Personal context, complex reasoning, and actions spanning multiple apps may require cloud processing. The privacy promise concerns how that information is handled after it leaves the device.

Isolation, attestation and deletion

Apple says PCC uses Apple silicon, Secure Enclave protections, Secure Boot, a hardened operating system and restricted privileged access. Device attestation lets an Apple device verify the identity and configuration of a PCC cluster before sending a request. Apple says the Google Cloud implementation extends the same end-to-end protections beyond Apple’s own data centers; see its explanation of the expansion to Google Cloud.

According to Apple’s PCC design description, data is used only to fulfill the inference request, is deleted afterward, is not placed in logs or debugging systems, and is not accessible to Apple staff. Apple has also published technical documentation and materials for independent security research.

What Apple may still measure

Apple says it can collect limited operational metadata, such as approximate request and response size, features used and processing time, while excluding the request content and returned result. If you opt in to device analytics, Apple may also receive privacy-preserving aggregate information about trends. That is different from retaining the text or audio of a Siri request.

What the Gemini deal does—and does not—mean

It does not make Siri the Gemini app

Apple’s arrangement is described as licensed model technology and protected inference inside Apple Intelligence. Siri is not simply opening Google’s consumer assistant under your Google account. Google’s policies for its public Gemini products therefore cannot be assumed to describe every Apple Intelligence request.

It does not establish that Siri requests train public Gemini

Apple says its foundation models are not trained on users’ private personal data or user interactions, as described in its foundation-model update. That statement addresses Apple’s models. It should not be expanded into a claim about every Google consumer product or undisclosed commercial term in the Apple-Google contract. The public announcements do not disclose all retention controls, audit procedures or liability provisions.

Siri identifiers are not Apple Account identifiers

Apple says Siri requests use a random, device-generated identifier rather than an Apple Account identifier, according to its privacy features overview. That reduces direct account linkage but is not the same as complete anonymity: request content, contextual information, device details and network information can still matter to a broader privacy analysis.

Private Cloud Compute is different from ChatGPT handoff

If you enable Apple’s ChatGPT extension, a request can follow that separate third-party route. Apple’s Apple Intelligence privacy documentation identifies ChatGPT requests separately from PCC processing. Do not treat the protections Apple describes for PCC as a blanket guarantee for every optional AI extension.

What remains uncertain

Apple has published a detailed architecture and inspection materials, but public documentation does not independently establish every production event or future implementation. Important unknowns include:

  • With USB C Connector to your USB A port for syncing and charging.
  • 2 meter in length (6ft), USB A to USB C Cable.
  • Worry-free 1-year warranty, lifetime technical support.
  • Note: This cable is only suitable for USB C ports and is not suitable for Lightning ports. It can be used with the USB C port on Apple TV HD for maintenance and support purposes.
  • the complete commercial and contractual terms of the Apple-Google collaboration;
  • the exact routing logic for each future Siri feature;
  • production audit results for every workload and region;
  • how abuse prevention, safety monitoring and error investigation operate without retaining request content; and
  • whether Apple’s architecture or policies will change as the service expands.

The relevant threat model also includes a PCC software vulnerability, a compromised or incorrectly attested server, supply-chain or hardware attacks, routing bugs that send excessive personal context, logging failures and prompt injection against agentic features. Apple describes mitigations and non-targetability goals; those are defenses, not proof that every failure is impossible. Its security-research program provides additional technical material.

How to check what left your device

Apple Intelligence Report can show requests sent off-device and processed by PCC. Apple says it can also identify requests sent to ChatGPT when that extension is enabled.

  1. On iPhone, iPad or Vision Pro, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report.
  2. On Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report.
  3. Review or export the report to see the listed off-device requests and any reported ChatGPT handoffs.

The report is a transparency feature, not a complete independent audit of Google personnel, server events or every internal control.

Choices for privacy-conscious users

  • Keep Siri or Apple Intelligence features disabled if sending personal context to any cloud service is unacceptable.
  • Do not enable optional third-party AI extensions unless you accept that provider’s terms.
  • Use on-device features where available, while recognizing that Apple may choose cloud processing for some tasks.
  • Review Apple Intelligence Report and analytics settings periodically.
  • For sensitive business work, use organization-managed devices and mobile-device-management policies as controls become available. Apple discusses model-processing and management options in its WWDC26 session.

Availability is limited

The redesigned Siri and related Apple Intelligence capabilities are not available to every Apple device, language or region. Apple’s June announcement said the features were in developer testing across iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, with consumer beta availability planned later in 2026 for supported devices and languages. The announcement notes regional restrictions, including special limitations in the European Union and China. Check Apple’s availability details for your location and operating-system release.
