Re:

Amazon’s Kindle Scribe exception is over: all three redesigned models are now available

The Kindle Scribe without a front light was the launch lineup’s one exception. Amazon now says all three redesigned Scribes are available, with different trade-offs around illumination, color, storage and price.

Amazon’s delayed Kindle Scribe without a front light has arrived. Amazon said on February 12, 2026 that the redesigned Kindle Scribe, Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and no-front-light Scribe were all available, although stock, prices and configurations still vary by country and Amazon marketplace.

The three new Kindle Scribes at a glance

Model Display and light Storage listed by Amazon Best for Availability and price context
Kindle Scribe 11-inch glare-free monochrome E Ink with adjustable front light 32 GB or 64 GB General reading, handwriting and documents Available now according to Amazon. The 64 GB model was promoted at $419.99 during June 2026 Prime Day; that was a limited U.S. promotional price, not a guaranteed current price.
Kindle Scribe Colorsoft 11-inch color E Ink with front light 32 GB or 64 GB Color-coded notes, diagrams, illustrations and annotated documents Available now according to Amazon. The 64 GB model was promoted at $519.99 during June 2026 Prime Day; that was a dated promotion.
Kindle Scribe without a front light 11-inch glare-free monochrome E Ink; no built-in illumination 16 GB Lower-cost writing and reading in well-lit rooms Initially delayed until 2026; Amazon now lists it as available. Inventory and launch timing can differ by marketplace.

All three are part of Amazon’s redesigned Scribe family. Amazon describes the new hardware as 5.4 mm thick, approximately 400 g, and up to 40% faster for writing and page turns than the prior design. The 40% figure is Amazon’s claim, not an independent measurement. Details and ordering options are on the official Kindle Scribe page.

What the “one exception” was—and why it changed

At launch, Amazon announced the front-lit Scribe, Colorsoft Scribe and a lower-priced model without a front light. The no-light version was the exception because launch coverage said it would not be available until sometime in 2026. That timing made early headlines suggesting that one new Scribe had not arrived.

That is now historical context. Amazon’s February 12, 2026 update says all three models are available, and Amazon’s device-identification documentation lists the no-front-light model as a 2026 release. “Available” does not promise that every configuration is in stock or shipping immediately: Amazon warns that Kindle generations and variants are not offered in every marketplace. The United States is also the clearest market for the software availability described below; other countries can have different dates and bundles.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft 64GB (newest model) — 11” paper-like color display — Write in notebooks, docs, and books. Read in any light. Pen included - Fig
  • Our most advanced Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” Colorsoft display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
  • Bring ideas to life in color – The custom-built Colorsoft display delivers high-contrast, paper-like color that’s easy on the eyes without distracting flashes when writing.
  • Get a pen-on-paper feel: The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
  • More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
  • Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.

What is different about the standard Kindle Scribe?

The standard model is the safest all-round choice because it combines the large monochrome writing surface with a front light. Its 11-inch display is designed for Kindle books, handwritten notebooks and documents, while USB-C handles charging and the included Premium Pen supports writing without a separate stylus purchase.

  • Adjustable front light for dark rooms, flights and bedtime reading.
  • 32 GB and 64 GB configurations listed by Amazon.
  • Amazon-advertised writing and page-turn performance up to 40% faster than the previous design.
  • Notebook tools including handwriting search, summaries, handwriting refinement and handwriting-to-text conversion.

For novels, ordinary notes and black-and-white PDFs, monochrome remains the straightforward value proposition. A larger capacity mainly gives you more room for PDFs, audiobooks and image-heavy documents; it does not change writing quality.

When does Kindle Scribe Colorsoft make sense?

Colorsoft is the first Scribe with a color display. Color can make a practical difference when you use color-coded notes, charts, diagrams, illustrations, comics or documents in which highlighting colors carry meaning. It includes the same general Scribe notebook concept and front-lighted design, with 32 GB and 64 GB versions listed by Amazon.

Color E Ink is not an LCD or OLED tablet. It has a different, paper-like appearance and is not intended to deliver a high-refresh-rate multimedia experience. Independent testing of the Colorsoft Scribe has questioned whether its higher price is justified for buyers who mainly read novels or write monochrome notes; that is a use-case judgment rather than a universal verdict. The June 2026 Prime Day price of $519.99 for 64 GB was a historical promotion, not today’s list price.

Who should choose the no-front-light Scribe?

The no-front-light model is the value-oriented option for people who normally write and read in rooms with reliable lighting. Removing the illumination can reduce hardware cost and may reduce power demands, but it changes when the device is usable.

  • Good fit: classrooms, offices, daytime commuting and other consistently lit environments.
  • Potentially poor fit: bedtime readers, overnight flights, dim cafés, camping and anyone who expects a traditional illuminated Kindle.
  • Capacity: Amazon lists this model with 16 GB.

Consider the lighting decision as a daily-use constraint, not a cosmetic specification. If you cannot predict where you will read, the standard front-lit Scribe is the safer purchase.

Amazon Kindle Scribe (16GB) - Your notes, documents and books, all in one place. With built-in AI notebook summarization. Includes Premium Pen - Tungsten
  • A digital notebook for all your writing needs - Replace your stack of notebooks with a single device purpose-built for writing, reading, and thinking. No notifications or social media.
  • With AI tools to transform your notes - Convert messy handwriting into readable font, summarize your notes, and change their length and tone with built-in AI notebook tools.
  • Feels like pen on paper - See, feel and hear your thoughts meet the page with every stroke of the Premium Pen. No need to set up or charge, just start writing.
  • Easily import and mark up documents - Import documents and PDFs using Send to Kindle, and mark them up directly on the page.
  • Capture insights as you read – Just start writing on a book's page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes. Expand the margins to add more notes, or collapse them to see the original page.

Notebook, AI and cloud features

Amazon describes the new Scribe software as an AI-oriented notebook system. The documented functions include:

  • Searching handwritten notes.
  • Summarizing notes.
  • Refining handwriting into a cleaner script-style presentation.
  • Converting handwriting to typed text.
  • Sharing notes with Alexa through the notebook workflow.
  • Importing documents from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.
  • Writing directly in books with Active Canvas.

Amazon says the new notebook AI features are available on the new Kindle Scribe and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in the United States. It specifically says a Prime membership or Alexa+ subscription is required for Send to Alexa; that requirement does not mean every notebook feature requires a subscription.

AI output is best treated as a convenience layer. Messy handwriting can be misread, summaries can omit nuance, and cloud-assisted features may require connectivity or an eligible account. Check converted text and summaries against the original page before sharing them or relying on them for work, study or records.

Amazon Kindle Scribe 32GB (newest model) — 11” display with front light, paper-like feel, and no distractions — Write in notebooks, docs, and books. Pen included - Graphite
  • All-new Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” glare-free display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
  • Get a pen-on-paper feel – The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
  • More room to read, write, and think – At just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, it’s redesigned for comfort, with a larger 11" display and 40% faster writing and page turns.
  • Work comfortably in any light – The display automatically adapts brightness to your lighting conditions. Adjust the warmth for greater comfort at night.
  • Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.

Which Kindle Scribe should you buy?

Your priority Best fit Main compromise
Lowest-cost entry to the new large Scribe format Scribe without a front light No illumination and 16 GB storage
One device for reading and writing in varied conditions Standard Kindle Scribe Costs more than the no-light model
Color diagrams, illustrations or color-coded annotation Kindle Scribe Colorsoft Highest price and the visual limitations of color E Ink
Mostly reading with little handwriting Consider a Paperwhite or a smaller Colorsoft Kindle The Scribe is larger and more expensive than a reading-first Kindle
Full apps, video, spreadsheets or collaboration iPad or Android tablet More distractions, shorter E Ink-style battery endurance and usually a separate stylus
Dedicated digital-paper writing reMarkable or a Kobo large-format note device Different bookstores, syncing and export workflows

Should existing Scribe owners upgrade?

Do not upgrade solely because the word “AI” appears in the new model description. The strongest hardware reasons are the thinner, lighter redesign, Amazon’s claimed faster writing response, the Colorsoft option and the choice between front-lit and unlit hardware.

Software support is model- and region-dependent. Amazon’s software page currently lists version 5.19.5 for the third-generation Scribe, no-front-light Scribe and Scribe Colorsoft. Amazon has not established in the cited documentation that every new function works on the 2022 Scribe. Check your exact model at Settings → Device Options → Device Info, then compare it with Amazon’s model-identification page and software-update page.

Scribe versus a tablet or another writing device

Why choose Scribe

  • Paper-like E Ink that many people find comfortable for long reading sessions.
  • A focused reading-and-handwriting environment with Kindle bookstore integration.
  • Premium Pen included with the device.
  • Fewer app and notification distractions than a general-purpose tablet.

Why choose a tablet

  • Full-color, high-refresh-rate screens and much stronger web, app, video and file capabilities.
  • Better support for complex PDFs, spreadsheets, collaboration and multimedia.
  • A wider selection of stylus apps and accessories.

Scribe is a focused reading-and-handwriting device, not a universal iPad replacement. A tablet is the better tool when your workflow depends on apps, rapid navigation or rich media.

Other credible alternatives

  • Apple iPad for app-heavy, color and collaborative work.
  • reMarkable Paper Pro for a writing-first environment without Kindle integration.
  • Kobo eReaders for Kobo’s bookstore and library ecosystem.
  • Onyx BOOX for Android-based E Ink flexibility, with more setup complexity.

Before ordering

  1. Confirm the exact model name, front-light specification and storage capacity.
  2. Check the Amazon marketplace for your country rather than assuming U.S. availability or pricing applies.
  3. Verify current stock, delivery date, bundle contents and return terms on the live product page.
  4. If buying Colorsoft, make sure color is central to your reading or annotation workflow.
  5. If buying the no-front-light model, test your expected reading locations: bedroom, commute, travel and evening use.
  6. Review AI results before sharing sensitive or important notes.

Amazon’s launch announcement also mentioned new folio covers, including plant-based, premium leather and executive notebook-style options. A Kindle Unlimited trial may be bundled with some purchases, but eligibility and duration vary by market, account and promotion; see Amazon Kindle Unlimited for current terms.

The Bottom Line

The old exception has been resolved: Amazon now says all three redesigned Kindle Scribes are available. Choose the standard front-lit Scribe for the broadest use, Colorsoft only when color materially improves your notes or documents, and the 16 GB no-front-light model only if you are comfortable reading and writing exclusively in adequate ambient light.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
