In 2022, Mark Zuckerberg discussed a “crazy idea” to wipe Facebook’s friend graph and have users rebuild their connections. The proposal became public in April 2025 through evidence discussed in the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust case against Meta. Facebook never implemented it, and the reporting does not indicate that accounts, posts, photos, messages or other personal data were slated for deletion.
What Zuckerberg actually proposed
Coverage of the 2022 internal discussion says Zuckerberg suggested “wiping everyone’s graphs and having them start again.” In Facebook terminology, a friend graph is the network of relationship links between user accounts. It is not the account itself or all information stored in it.
The reported concept would have removed existing friend connections across Facebook and required people to rebuild their networks. It was an internal strategy idea, not a public announcement, product launch or finalized specification.
The proposal was reported by TechCrunch, TechSpot and Fortune in connection with testimony and evidence presented in the FTC’s 2025 antitrust trial involving Meta.

What would have been affected—and what would not
| Potentially affected by the reported idea | Not established as part of the proposal |
|---|---|
| Mutual Facebook friend relationships and the links that form the friend graph | User accounts or login credentials |
| The need to send or accept friend requests again | Posts, comments, photographs or videos |
| The accumulated social context in an existing friend list | Private messages, groups, pages or advertising records |
“Deleting all your Facebook friends” is therefore a vivid but imprecise shorthand. The available reporting supports describing a possible reset of friendship connections—not a mass account purge or deletion of everyone’s personal data. No evidence in the cited coverage shows that Instagram or WhatsApp relationships were included.
Why Facebook considered such a drastic reset
Facebook’s center of gravity had shifted
Zuckerberg reportedly acknowledged that Facebook’s “friend” component had declined while its “interest” component expanded. Groups, pages, recommended posts, video, creators and entertainment increasingly competed with direct communication between friends and family. TechSpot’s account of the testimony describes that change in emphasis.
A concern about cultural relevance
The apparent objective was to make Facebook feel socially active and culturally relevant again, particularly to younger users at a time when TikTok was attracting attention. A forced reconnection could have created a reason for dormant users to return and deliberately choose whom they still wanted in their network. That was a hoped-for engagement strategy, not a demonstrated result or a privacy feature.

The “stale graph” problem
Years-old networks contain former classmates, ex-colleagues, abandoned accounts, one-time event contacts and people whose posts users no longer read. Secondary reporting, including PC Gamer, presents this accumulation as part of the rationale. The complete internal analysis is not publicly described in the cited reports, so it is more accurate to call this a reported strategic premise than a verified Meta research finding.
The idea was never implemented
Meta executives reportedly pushed back, and Facebook did not erase users’ friend lists or require everyone to reconstruct their networks. The reporting identifies Facebook head Tom Alison among those involved in the pushback, but does not establish that he alone killed the idea or provide the complete internal exchange. The Indian Express also reported on the objections.
That distinction matters: Facebook users were not suddenly forced to start from zero, and there is no indication that the proposal became a public test.

Another model was discussed
Coverage also describes discussion of moving Facebook toward a more follower-based system instead of relying so heavily on mutual friendships. A follower model would let people subscribe to updates without requiring both sides to accept a friend relationship. It would represent a major change to Facebook’s social structure, but the cited reporting does not say that this alternative replaced the existing model in full.
Why resetting the graph would have been risky
Loss of hard-to-recreate relationships
Friend lists can preserve links to distant relatives, deceased people’s contacts, former coworkers and people known only by an old profile name. A reset could make some relationships practically impossible to recover, even if users were allowed to send new requests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTrust and consent
Unilaterally changing relationship data for engagement purposes could make users question whether other parts of their social history were secure. The inconvenience would be imposed on every user, including people who were satisfied with their existing network.

Harassment and impersonation risks
Rebuilding at scale could produce waves of unwanted requests, opportunistic reconnections, impersonation attempts and harassment. Users would have to decide which requests were genuine without the continuity of an established friend list.
Community and business disruption
People often use Facebook relationships to find local groups, events, customers, colleagues and community contacts. The reports do not specify how a reset would have interacted with those systems, so it would be wrong to assume they would have been unaffected.
A network reset would not automatically fix the feed
If the underlying problem was an overloaded feed or a shift toward recommendations and entertainment, removing friendship links might create administrative work without restoring meaningful interaction. A stale graph and a poor ranking or discovery experience are different product problems.

Friend management is not the same as a platform-wide reset
Individual users can usually reduce unwanted updates through tools such as unfollowing or feed controls without ending a friendship. A graph reset would have been far more disruptive because it would remove the relationship links themselves. Facebook’s labels and menu locations can change, so a current help page should be consulted before relying on a specific interface path.
Why the story surfaced in the FTC case
The proposal became public in April 2025 while the FTC was presenting evidence in its antitrust case against Meta. The discussion was relevant as an illustration of Meta’s product and competitive strategy; the case was not specifically about deleting Facebook friends. Treating the evidence as proof that Facebook had already abandoned its social function would go beyond what the reported material establishes.
The precise takeaway
Zuckerberg did consider a radical, platform-wide reset of Facebook’s friendship network in 2022. He did not carry it out. “He planned to delete all your friends” compresses an unimplemented internal idea into a definitive action: the supported account is that he discussed wiping the friend graph, while the available reporting does not support claims that Facebook deleted accounts, content or personal data.
