The company lists $20,000 for Early Access ownership or $499 per month for a Standard subscription, plus a fully refundable $200 deposit. But “available” currently means orderable or reservable: as of August 18, 2026, NEO is still best described as an early-access/preorder product, not a broadly delivered household appliance with extensive independent testing.
What “real” means in NEO’s case
Four separate questions are often mixed together:
- Is there a real manufacturer? Yes. NEO is made by 1X Technologies, a robotics company with Norwegian roots and U.S. operations.
- Is there a physical robot? Yes. NEO follows 1X’s earlier NEO Beta and NEO Gamma development platforms.
- Is there a real order page and price? Yes. 1X lists a refundable deposit, ownership pricing and a monthly plan at its official order page.
- Is it a proven, routinely delivered consumer product? That has not been established by the available evidence as of August 18, 2026.
1X announced NEO on October 28, 2025. It later announced a 58,000-square-foot Hayward, California factory with more than 200 employees and said first customer shipments were planned for 2026. Those are meaningful production milestones, but production, preorder allocation and completed deliveries are not the same thing. The factory announcement also includes company claims that first-year capacity exceeded 10,000 units and sold out in five days; those figures are not independently audited in the sources reviewed. 1X’s announcement and the Hayward factory release are the relevant primary sources.
How much does the 1X NEO cost?

These are the prices shown on 1X’s order page, viewed for this article on August 18, 2026. The public listing does not, by itself, settle taxes, delivery charges, insurance, battery replacement, maintenance after the ownership warranty, or every subscription term. Confirm those items in the contract before paying.
Ownership versus the monthly plan
- One year: $499 monthly payments total $5,988.
- Three years: Payments total $17,964 before taxes, fees or other contract charges.
- Simple break-even: $20,000 divided by $499 is about 40.1 months, or 3.34 years.
- Four years: Payments total $23,952, which is higher than the listed ownership price on a simple nominal-payment comparison.
This arithmetic does not prove that ownership is the better deal. The public page does not fully explain cancellation, ownership transfer, maintenance responsibility, software access after cancellation, or whether the deposit is credited toward the final amount. Treat the comparison as a cash-flow illustration, not financial advice.

What NEO is designed to do
1X describes NEO as a general-purpose humanoid intended for domestic environments. Company-stated goals include navigating a home, fetching objects, opening doors, switching lights off, responding to spoken requests and managing chores through a mobile app. 1X also says the robot can gain capabilities over time. These are advertised capabilities and goals, not independent measurements of reliability, speed or task-completion rates. See 1X’s NEO overview and its product announcement.
It is more accurate to separate four evidence levels:
- Promotional demonstrations: actions shown in company videos.
- Advertised capability: what 1X says NEO is designed to do.
- Launch functionality: what early buyers are promised.
- Independent verification: third-party testing of real homes, unusual objects, clutter, stairs, pets, low light and failure recovery.
The available material does not justify calling NEO a fully autonomous maid, a replacement for a housekeeper or a robot that can safely perform every household chore.

The major caveat: Expert Mode and remote assistance
According to 1X, NEO arrives with “basic autonomy.” For complex tasks it does not know, an expert can remotely supervise the robot at scheduled times. The order page also says owners can pilot NEO through the mobile app and a VR device. Independent coverage has characterized this as a human-in-the-loop system in which a remote operator may control NEO during some tasks. Tom’s Guide’s report discusses that issue.

That changes the buying proposition: early usefulness may depend partly on access to human assistance rather than on autonomous behavior alone. The public pages reviewed do not clearly establish whether Expert Mode is optional, whether it is included indefinitely with ownership or in the $499 plan, how much notice is required, which tasks qualify, or what happens when the internet or cellular connection fails.
Before ordering, ask 1X in writing:
- Can remote access be disabled completely?
- Is the owner notified during every remote session?
- Can an operator see camera and microphone feeds inside the home?
- Are sessions recorded, logged or used for training, and how long are they retained?
- What service remains available during a Wi-Fi, 5G, power or cloud outage?
Hardware specifications—and a specification conflict
1X’s launch material states that NEO weighs about 66 pounds (29.94 kilograms), can lift more than 150 pounds (approximately 68 kilograms), can carry about 55 pounds (24.95 kilograms) and has a stated noise level of 22 dB. The robot uses a soft body and tendon-driven actuation. These are manufacturer figures, not independent laboratory results.

There is also a discrepancy in the advertised hand hardware. One launch source cites 22 degrees of freedom; a later company update linked from the product page cites 25 degrees of freedom. That could reflect a revision, but the available material does not prove why the number changed. Confirm the specification with 1X before relying on it.
How NEO is supposed to learn
1X says NEO uses Redwood AI, a vision-language model trained on real-world data to help the robot learn and repeat household tasks. “Learns over time” could mean several different things:
- A software or model update deployed by 1X.
- A task-specific routine learned from a demonstration.
- A household preference stored in the robot’s memory.
- Teleoperation data used to improve the broader system.
Nothing in the cited material establishes that every individual NEO independently develops human-like general intelligence. Ask whether learning occurs locally, in the cloud or through scheduled updates, and whether owners can delete stored household data.

When will NEO ship?
1X’s order page says U.S. deliveries start in 2026. The launch material says broader international expansion begins in 2027. These are company-stated schedules, not guaranteed delivery dates.
The Hayward factory announcement supports the claim that 1X is building production capacity, while a 2026 report still described NEO as being on preorder. As of August 18, 2026, the evidence supports “available to order or reserve,” not “widely available in ordinary retail channels.”

A humanoid robot in a home raises issues beyond ordinary smart-speaker privacy. NEO may involve cameras, microphones, app access and VR-based control. If Expert Mode uses a human operator, the functionality-versus-privacy trade-off becomes especially important.

Questions the public listing does not fully answer
- Which video and audio processing happens onboard versus in the cloud?
- Who can access live feeds or recordings, and how long are they retained?
- Are visitors notified, blurred or excluded from remote sessions?
- Can owners create no-go zones for stairs, kitchens, bedrooms, pools or offices?
- What happens after a software, power, Wi-Fi or cellular failure?
- What liability applies if NEO damages property or injures someone?
- Is it waterproof, weather-resistant or suitable for outdoor use?
- What safeguards exist around children, pets, hot surfaces, knives, water and firearms?
The order page displays questions about operating costs, cooking, waterproofing, outdoor use and maintenance, but the indexed material reviewed here does not expose complete answers. Obtain the current terms, privacy policy, safety instructions and warranty exclusions from 1X before committing funds.
A practical buyer checklist
Delivery certainty
- Is your payment a reservation, a binding purchase or a refundable preorder?
- Is the 2026 date an estimate, and what happens if production slips?
- Does priority delivery apply to your location?
Total cost
- Confirm taxes, shipping, maintenance, repairs and battery replacement.
- Ask what happens after the three-year ownership warranty.
- Read subscription cancellation, end-of-term and software-access terms.
Physical fit
- Measure doorways, stairs, floor transitions and charging space.
- Consider trip hazards and interactions with children, pets and visitors.
Support
- Ask about local service, replacement parts, loaners, returns and software-support duration.
- Request written limits on remote supervision and data access.
Who should consider NEO now?
NEO may appeal to a buyer who accepts early-access risk, wants to participate in an emerging robotics platform and can evaluate a $200 deposit, $20,000 purchase or $499 monthly commitment without treating the robot as a guaranteed replacement for paid household labor.
Waiting is more sensible if you need proven autonomous performance, clear remote-operator privacy controls, predictable delivery, mature repair coverage or documented safety around children, pets, stairs, kitchens and water.
Bottom line
1X NEO is real: it has a named manufacturer, a physical-product lineage, an official order page and published prices. The current offer is $20,000 for Early Access ownership or $499 per month, with a refundable $200 deposit. But the product remains an early-access/preorder proposition. Its advertised capabilities, human-assisted Expert Mode, delivery schedule, privacy controls and long-term operating costs require careful verification before a purchase becomes financially or practically sensible.
