That announcement confirms a 2026 increase, not a second U.S. increase later in the year. As of August 18, 2026, Spotify’s official materials do not confirm another U.S. hike after the January change. Your exact first higher charge depends on the notice Spotify sent and your billing date.

When will the higher price start?
Spotify says affected U.S. subscribers receive an email and a one-month period to cancel before the new rate applies. There is no single January 15 charge date for everyone: the first higher payment follows your account’s billing cycle and the effective date in your notice.
- Open Spotify’s email about the price update and note the effective date.
- Check your next billing date on your Spotify account page.
- If you want to keep the service, make sure the payment method and expected amount are correct.
- If you want to avoid the increase, cancel before the applicable billing date and grace-period deadline.
Trial users receive one month at the original price after the trial ends, then the updated price applies. If you do nothing, the subscription generally continues and the new rate is charged at the applicable billing date. Spotify’s price-update guidance contains the account-specific rules.
Which countries are affected?
United States
The January 2026 U.S. increase and the prices in the table above are confirmed by Spotify.

Estonia and Latvia
Spotify’s January 15 announcement also named Estonia and Latvia. Their prices and effective dates are localized; do not apply the U.S. dollar amounts.
Other markets
Spotify announced broader regional changes in August 2025 across parts of South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Amounts and timing varied by country. International subscribers should use the price and date in their local Spotify notice rather than a U.S. comparison.
What do Premium plans include now?
Spotify’s current U.S. page highlights ad-free music, offline listening and lossless audio up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Availability can depend on plan, device, product version and rollout status.

- Audiobooks: specified plans include up to 15 hours per month from Spotify’s subscriber catalog. This is not unlimited audiobook listening, and access differs by plan and catalog.
- Student: eligible students may receive Hulu, subject to Spotify’s eligibility and verification rules.
- Duo and Family: these plans provide multiple accounts, but Spotify’s U.S. terms require members to reside at the same address.
- Other features: podcasts, music videos, workouts and personalized discovery remain part of the broader Spotify platform.
Spotify also lists a separate Audiobooks Access plan, so do not assume every Premium tier includes the same audiobook benefit.
Why did Spotify raise the price?
Spotify says occasional pricing updates reflect the value it provides, changing market conditions, continued investment in audio content, personalization and discovery, and efforts it says can benefit artists. Those are Spotify’s stated reasons; they do not establish that the extra subscription money flows directly to artists or that payouts rise proportionally.

Is another U.S. increase coming later in 2026?
- Confirmed: the January 2026 U.S. increase.
- Confirmed: Spotify has made other international pricing changes, including the August 2025 announcement.
- Not confirmed in Spotify’s reviewed official material: a separate U.S. increase later in 2026.
A headline about “another hike” may refer to a different country, plan or an older announcement. Treat a new charge as confirmed only when it appears in a current Spotify email, account notice or official newsroom announcement.

Ways to avoid or reduce the increase
Cancel Premium and use Spotify Free
Spotify’s ad-supported tier preserves access to saved tracks, playlists, podcasts and other content. You give up Premium benefits such as ad-free listening, downloads and the same level of playback control, so it suits casual listeners who can tolerate ads and do not need offline playback.
Check Student eligibility
If you qualify and pass verification, Student costs $6.99 per month. Eligibility is not permanent; Spotify may require renewed verification.
Compare Duo or Family honestly
Duo can make sense for two people who live at the same address, while Family can reduce the per-person cost for a qualifying household. These are not unrestricted sharing plans, and changing plans can alter included benefits such as audiobook access.

Use a promotional offer carefully
As displayed on Spotify’s U.S. page, eligible new Individual subscribers can receive three months free before the $12.99 recurring rate; the page showed an offer end date of September 23, 2026. Eligible Student users may see one month free. Promotions are for qualifying new or returning users and are not permanent prices.
Understand gift-card limits
Spotify says lower-priced gift cards can still be redeemed, but they are limited to Premium Individual. They are not a universal workaround for Duo, Family or Student pricing.

Alternatives worth comparing
Compare equivalent benefits, not just the headline music price: offline playback, audio quality, family rules, audiobook access, taxes and any video or membership bundle.
- Apple Music may fit people invested in Apple devices and services. Verify the live regional price at signup.
- YouTube Premium can be compelling if ad-free YouTube video matters as much as music. Pricing and eligibility vary by account and region.
- Amazon Music is worth checking for existing Amazon members or Alexa households. Confirm standalone and membership-linked rates at checkout.
Avoid unofficial account-sharing marketplaces, VPN pricing schemes and gray-market gift cards. They can violate terms or fail to provide reliable access.
How repeated are Spotify’s increases?
Spotify announced a U.S. Premium adjustment in July 2023, broader international changes in August 2025 and another U.S. adjustment in January 2026. TechRadar described the January move as the third U.S. hike in three years, but that count is specifically a U.S.-focused framing, not proof that every market received three increases.
The key practical point is narrower: the 2026 U.S. increase is real, the current Individual rate is $12.99 per month, and the exact charge date is account-specific. No second U.S. increase later in 2026 is confirmed by the official material cited here.
