If an Instagram contact promises fast, guaranteed Bitcoin profits, do not send money or cryptocurrency. These pitches usually lead to a scammer-controlled wallet or fake trading platform, not an investment. The balance shown on the screen can be fictitious, and demands for taxes or withdrawal fees are another part of the fraud.
A May 2022 Malwarebytes example described a $1,000 payment supposedly turning into $10,000, followed by requests for screenshots and additional payments. That pattern remains current: the FTC says cryptocurrency investment scams often start on social media, display false returns and block withdrawals unless victims pay more.
The rule that prevents most losses
No legitimate person can guarantee a profit from Bitcoin or any other volatile investment. Treat an unsolicited Instagram offer, “mentor,” celebrity endorsement or friend’s sudden money-making post as suspicious—especially when it combines urgency, secrecy and a request to transfer cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin itself is not proof of fraud. The deception lies in the promise, impersonation, fake platform or demand to send funds to someone else. Cryptocurrency is attractive to criminals because transfers can move quickly across borders and are often difficult or impossible to reverse.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How the Instagram scam unfolds
| Stage | What the victim sees | What is really happening |
|---|---|---|
| Contact | A direct message, Reel, comment, advertisement or apparent recommendation | The scammer creates credibility and starts a private conversation |
| Promise | “Guaranteed” or unusually rapid returns from a secret strategy | The return is bait, not a realistic investment projection |
| Payment | Instructions to buy Bitcoin, Ether or stablecoins through a familiar service | The victim is coached to send funds to a scammer-controlled wallet |
| Fake growth | A professional dashboard showing rapidly increasing profits | The displayed balance may not represent any real cryptocurrency |
| Blocked withdrawal | Requests for taxes, clearance charges, verification fees or an account upgrade | Each payment is designed to extract more money; paying usually triggers another demand |
| Recovery attempt | A “tracing expert,” lawyer or recovery service offers to help | A second criminal targets the previous victim for an advance fee |
The FBI describes fraudulent platforms that imitate legitimate sites, show attractive portfolio values and provide fake customer-support channels. A small early withdrawal, if allowed, can be used to make a much larger deposit seem safe.
Where the pitch appears
- Unsolicited messages from a supposed Bitcoin coach, trader, miner or investment manager.
- Posts and Reels featuring luxury cars, cash, account balances or cryptocurrency profits.
- Comments promising to double Bitcoin or reveal a “secret” method.
- A hacked friend’s account suddenly promoting a quick-profit opportunity.
- Fake celebrity, influencer, exchange or financial-expert accounts.
- Romance or friendship conversations that gradually become investment advice.
- Paid advertisements that lead to an unfamiliar trading site or app.
- “Limited-time” offers requiring immediate payment.
Red flags that should end the conversation
- Guaranteed, risk-free or zero-risk profits.
- Very large returns promised in hours or days.
- A minimum deposit such as $500, $1,000 or $5,000.
- Pressure to act before you can verify the person or business.
- Instructions to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal or another private app.
- Requests to buy cryptocurrency and send it to a wallet address.
- Requests for screenshots of Cash App, Coinbase, bank or wallet screens.
- Requests for passwords, one-time codes, seed phrases, private keys or remote access.
- A dashboard showing profits without an independently verifiable business behind it.
- Withdrawal blocked by taxes, clearance charges, anti-money-laundering fees or “security deposits.”
- Testimonials, registrations or celebrity endorsements that cannot be checked independently.
- A blue checkmark treated as proof that the investment is genuine.
- A person who cannot clearly explain where funds are held, who controls them and how the strategy works.
Why familiar services and social proof do not make it safe
A legitimate exchange can still be part of the scam
Coinbase, Cash App or another recognizable service may simply be the tool used to purchase cryptocurrency before it is sent to the fraudster. The service’s legitimacy does not validate the Instagram contact, wallet, website or promised strategy.
A blue checkmark is not an investment license
Verification may relate to account identity on a platform; it does not prove that an offer is safe, profitable, regulated or actually connected to the person being represented. An account can also be hacked or used to impersonate someone.

A friend’s account may be compromised
Do not assume a familiar profile sent the message. Contact the friend through a separate channel you already trust, ask whether they personally posted it, and warn mutual contacts if the account appears hijacked. The FTC has specifically warned about investment promotions made from compromised friends’ social-media accounts: consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2025/05/can-you-spot-investment-scam-social-media.

Romance and “mentor” versions
Confidence scams use emotional trust before they mention money. A person met online may talk about personal wealth, offer to teach crypto trading or promise to invest on your behalf. Once trust is established, they direct you to a platform or wallet, create urgency and demand more funds when you try to withdraw.
The FTC calls an online contact offering to teach cryptocurrency investing or asking for cryptocurrency a scam warning: consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-cryptocurrency-scams. The FBI describes the same progression in confidence and romance-based investment fraud: ic3.gov/PSA/2023/PSA230314.

How to check an offer without putting money at risk
- Stop the conversation. Do not let the sender coach you through a purchase.
- Do not click the supplied link or install the suggested app.
- Search independently. Look up the person, company, website, URL, app and wallet address, adding “scam,” “fraud,” “complaint” and “review.” The FTC recommends this approach at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/investment-scams.
- Verify the business outside the supplied site. A professional design, registration number or customer-support chat is not independent proof.
- Verify friends and public figures through a separate channel. Do not reply to the investment message to confirm identity.
- Protect your credentials. Never share passwords, one-time codes, private keys, recovery phrases or account screenshots containing balances, QR codes or personal details.
- Apply the guarantee test. A promised rapid or guaranteed return is enough reason to walk away.
If you already sent money or information
1. Stop paying
Do not send a tax, release fee, verification payment, security deposit or recovery fee. The FBI warns that fake platforms commonly demand additional fees or taxes after displaying supposed profits: ic3.gov/PSA/2023/PSA230314.
2. Preserve evidence before deleting anything
- Instagram usernames, profile URLs and message threads
- Emails, phone numbers and other contact details
- Website and app addresses
- Wallet addresses, transaction IDs or blockchain hashes
- Dates, amounts and payment methods
- Screenshots of dashboards, invoices and fee demands
- Bank, exchange and payment-app records
The FBI requests these details when victims report cryptocurrency investment fraud: ic3.gov/PSA/2026/PSA260615.

- Notify your bank if you used a card or bank transfer.
- Contact the cryptocurrency exchange where you bought the asset.
- Notify the payment-app provider.
- Ask whether the payment can be stopped, frozen or flagged.

5. Report the fraud
For U.S. readers, report social-media and investment fraud to the FTC, cryptocurrency crime to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, and securities-related misconduct to the SEC. Use Instagram’s in-app Report function for the profile, message, post or advertisement, then block the account. App labels can vary by region, operating system and account type.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Beware the recovery scam
After a loss, criminals may pose as cryptocurrency tracing specialists, lawyers, investigators, government officials, exchange employees or blockchain-recovery companies. They promise to retrieve the funds for an upfront payment. The FBI warns that these services target victims through social media, messaging platforms, search results and comment sections: ic3.gov/PSA/2023/psa230811.
Anyone who contacts you unexpectedly and guarantees recovery in exchange for a fee should be treated as another scammer. Reporting can help investigators, but it does not itself reverse a transaction or guarantee reimbursement.

How widespread is the problem?
FTC figures are U.S. reported losses, not a complete count of all fraud. The FTC said consumers reported $2.1 billion in social-media scam losses during 2025, and more than half of those reported losses came from investment scams: consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2026/04/how-spot-top-scams-started-social-media. It separately reported more than $7.9 billion in investment-scam losses in 2025, with a median individual loss above $10,000: consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2026/04/people-losing-big-investment-scams-learn-how-spot-and-avoid-them.
What not to believe
- “The dashboard shows my money.” A displayed balance can be entirely fabricated.
- “I made a small withdrawal, so it is legitimate.” A small release may be bait for a larger deposit.
- “I only need to pay the tax once.” The fee demand is usually part of the extraction cycle.
- “They threatened legal action.” Threats to force a cryptocurrency payment are another pressure tactic.
- “I am embarrassed, so I should stay quiet.” Prompt reporting and provider notification are more useful than negotiating with the scammer.
The Bottom Line
Do not send money or cryptocurrency to an Instagram contact or to a platform they recommend when the pitch promises guaranteed or unusually rapid returns. Stop, verify independently and report the account. If you paid, stop further transfers, preserve evidence and contact your bank, exchange or payment provider immediately.
