The company forecast about ₩9.1 trillion in third-quarter operating profit—nearly four times its year-earlier result—but below analysts’ roughly ₩10.3 trillion expectation. In an unusually candid statement, management acknowledged concerns about Samsung’s technological competitiveness. “Crisis” described that strategic and execution pressure, not bankruptcy, insolvency or a company-wide financial collapse.
The final figures, released October 31, showed ₩79.098731 trillion in revenue and ₩9.183371 trillion in operating profit. The episode mattered because Samsung was recovering financially while failing to capture as much of the artificial-intelligence memory boom as investors expected.
What happened on October 8, 2024?
Samsung Electronics announced preliminary guidance for the three months ended September 30, 2024:
- Sales of approximately ₩79 trillion, within an official ₩78–₩80 trillion range.
- Operating profit of approximately ₩9.1 trillion, within an official ₩9.0–₩9.2 trillion range.
The company also issued a rare public apology addressed to customers, investors and employees. Samsung said it accepted responsibility for disappointing performance and for concerns about its technical competitiveness. Which profit target did Samsung miss?
The headline’s “profit target” was primarily the market’s expectation, not a disclosed internal annual target. Reuters cited an LSEG SmartEstimate of about ₩10.3 trillion, roughly ₩1.2 trillion above Samsung’s preliminary guidance.

Why was a strong-looking result disappointing?
The semiconductor recovery was uneven. Samsung’s Device Solutions division faced attractive demand for advanced AI memory but weaker conditions in older products. Samsung identified several pressures in its explanatory note:

- Some mobile customers adjusted inventories.
- Chinese memory makers increased supplies of legacy products, adding pricing pressure.
- One-off costs, including incentive provisions, weighed on the semiconductor division.

Why HBM3E mattered to the AI boom
HBM is high-bandwidth memory placed close to advanced processors. It moves data rapidly enough for demanding workloads such as AI training and inference, where accelerators from companies including Nvidia require large amounts of fast memory. HBM3E is a newer generation.

Qualification, yield and volume production are strategically important. Suppliers that can pass a major customer’s technical tests and ship at scale can command better margins, deepen customer relationships and participate in AI-server growth. Samsung remained one of the world’s largest memory manufacturers, but SK Hynix had established a stronger position in HBM, with Micron also competing. The risk was therefore not that Samsung had lost every semiconductor market; it was that it could lose influence in the fastest-growing, highest-value memory category.
AI memory versus conventional memory
Advanced AI memory
Products such as HBM3E benefited from AI-infrastructure investment. Demand was strong, but Samsung’s delayed start with a major customer limited how fully it could convert that demand into third-quarter earnings.
Legacy memory
Older DRAM and NAND products serve PCs, smartphones and other devices. They are more exposed to inventory corrections, commoditization and oversupply. Increased Chinese supply and softer mobile conditions reduced the benefit of the broader memory recovery.

Foundry manufacturing
Samsung’s foundry business makes chips designed by other companies. Its effort to close the gap with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. formed part of the wider competitiveness debate, but it was not the sole explanation for the third-quarter miss. Memory, foundry and consumer-electronics operations should not be treated as one business.
What did Samsung mean by “crisis”?
Samsung did not declare insolvency or say it could not pay debts. In its apology, management acknowledged that people were discussing a crisis because of concerns about the company’s technical competitiveness and execution. The most accurate reading is a serious technology and strategy challenge, not an immediate financial-survival event.
- Financially: Samsung was profitable, with final operating profit of ₩9.183371 trillion.
- Relative to expectations: It underperformed the market’s forecast.
- Strategically: It risked falling behind rivals in HBM and faced questions about advanced-chip execution.
How did the quarter compare with Samsung’s recent history?
The numbers show recovery and deterioration at the same time. Final Q3 operating profit was almost four times Q3 2023’s ₩2.433534 trillion, confirming recovery from the semiconductor downturn. Yet it declined from Q2 2024’s ₩10.44 trillion and missed the level investors expected from the AI-led upturn. Final Q3 revenue was ₩79.098731 trillion, so the central concern was earnings quality and semiconductor positioning rather than a collapse in sales.

What was the market reaction?
Reuters reported that Samsung shares fell about 1.2% after the guidance and were down more than 20% year to date at that time. Those figures describe the market reaction reported in October 2024, not a current share-price assessment. The report is available through Moneycontrol’s Reuters coverage.
What did Samsung say it would do next?
Management said its primary focus would be restoring fundamental technological competitiveness. Later Q3 materials emphasized expanding HBM3E sales and pursuing a profit-centered semiconductor strategy; Samsung’s conference presentation is available here.
Investors would therefore watch whether Samsung could qualify and ship HBM3E to major AI-chip customers, narrow the HBM gap with SK Hynix, improve foundry competitiveness, and withstand oversupply in conventional memory. The October guidance alone could not establish whether those issues were temporary or structural.
Bottom line: a strategic warning, not a financial collapse
Samsung apologized because its ₩9.1 trillion preliminary operating-profit forecast fell well short of a market expectation near ₩10.3 trillion and exposed delayed progress in HBM3E. The final result remained strongly profitable and far above the year-earlier figure. “Crisis” referred to pressure on technology leadership and execution—especially in AI memory—not to bankruptcy or an inability to make money.
