Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, acquired Beeper on April 9, 2024. It had already bought universal-messaging app Texts.com in 2023, so the deal briefly looked like Automattic owned two competing “chat apps to rule them all.” The products and teams have since converged under the Beeper brand. As of August 18, 2026, Beeper is Automattic’s unified inbox for supported messaging networks, with free and paid plans—but it remains an aggregation layer, not a complete replacement for every native chat app.
The acquisition in brief

Beeper said it had just over 115,000 users when it announced the deal, a figure that described its 2024 user base rather than current adoption. Automattic said the Beeper and Texts teams would work together under the Beeper name. The company placed Beeper in its “Other Bets” group at the time.
Automattic’s announcement and Beeper’s announcement do not state a transaction value. Reports that cite a $125 million price should therefore not be treated as an officially confirmed figure.
Why Automattic wanted a messaging business
Automattic’s portfolio spans publishing, commerce, open-source software and communication tools. Beeper and Texts fit a specific thesis: people should not have to jump between separate applications simply because their contacts use different networks.

That is narrower than a plan to build a general-purpose social network or “super-app.” The stated opportunity was a single, searchable inbox for conversations that still live on services such as WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, iMessage and other supported networks. Automattic also presented the products as a way to pursue more open, encrypted and user-controlled communication.
The corporate parent offered Beeper a larger platform while leaving the team focused on the difficult interoperability work: authentication, message syncing and support for networks that control their own protocols and policies.
Beeper and Texts were complementary, not identical

Texts users were moved into corresponding Beeper plans. Existing customers can still use Texts.com to access account and billing information, according to Beeper’s transition guidance.

The transition documentation also says Texts for Work customers moved to Beeper Plus Plus at a discounted $30-per-month rate. That is a legacy arrangement, not the standard public Plus Plus price.

What Beeper is now
As of August 18, 2026, Beeper has apps for Android, iPhone, iPad, ChromeOS, macOS, Windows and Linux. It combines conversations from supported networks in one inbox and offers messages, group chats, media, reactions, stickers, replies, disappearing messages, broadcast channels and threads where each network permits them.
Support is uneven by design. Beeper’s FAQ notes that some actions—particularly certain calling functions—still require the native app. The supported-network list also changes: Beeper announced LINE support in June 2026, initially through Beeper Cloud, in its June update.

Automattic’s current product list treats Beeper as an ongoing product, not a short-lived acquisition experiment.
Privacy depends on the connection type
On-Device connections
Beeper’s newer On-Device architecture connects from your device directly to a supported network. Beeper says this removes its servers from the middle of that connection and preserves end-to-end encryption where the underlying service supports it. The architecture is described in Beeper’s 2025 announcement.
Cloud connections
The older Beeper Cloud model uses Beeper’s servers as a bridge between the app and the messaging network. Beeper says messages are stored using encryption and that Cloud connections are being gradually deprecated, although existing users may continue using them during the transition.

What the privacy label does—and does not—mean
- “End-to-end encrypted” is not a blanket description of every network or connection.
- The underlying service’s encryption, the bridge used and the account setup all affect the result.
- Beeper says integrations are open source where possible; that does not mean every component of every supported service is open source.
- One inbox reduces app switching but concentrates access to several accounts in one application.
Users who require the strongest available privacy should check the specific network and choose On-Device connections where supported, rather than relying on Beeper’s brand-level description.

Beeper says the free tier is intended to remain available for core messaging and that it does not show advertising. Subscriptions renew automatically; cancellation stops future renewals, while paid features continue through the current billing period. Details are in the official plan FAQ.

Legacy entitlements can change the answer
People who were active before July 16, 2025 may retain expanded free allowances, including up to 12 total accounts and scheduled sending. Early adopters who paid $120 for early access receive Beeper Plus features indefinitely within the stated account limits. Former Texts users were mapped to corresponding Beeper plans. Consequently, an older review or screenshot may show better limits than a new account receives.
What Beeper still does not replace
- Native calls: Video and some voice functions may require WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime, Telegram or another first-party app.
- Account administration: Recovery flows, security prompts, contact management and some media actions remain network-specific.
- Guaranteed interoperability: Authentication, APIs, anti-spam systems and terms can change, breaking or restricting a bridge.
- Platform ownership: Apple still controls iMessage, Meta controls WhatsApp and the other networks retain their own policies. Beeper cannot promise permanent access to a proprietary service.
- Identical features: A feature available in one native client may be missing or behave differently in Beeper.
Keep native apps installed if you depend on calling, account recovery or functions that Beeper does not expose.
Who benefits—and who should skip it
Beeper is a sensible fit for
- People who actively use several supported networks.
- Users managing personal and work accounts.
- Anyone who values one searchable inbox, fewer notifications and desktop access.
- Users who want scheduling, reminders or voice-note transcription and accept a subscription for those extras.
- Android users seeking a consolidated workflow rather than an iMessage workaround alone.
It may be a poor fit for
- Someone whose contacts are concentrated on one service.
- People who need every native feature, especially calling.
- Privacy-sensitive users unwilling to distinguish On-Device from Cloud connections.
- Businesses requiring formal administration, compliance documentation or centralized retention controls.
- Anyone who wants a one-time purchase; Beeper lists subscriptions, not a lifetime license.
The financial trade-off is straightforward: Free can cover basic consolidation, Plus costs $9.99 monthly or $99.99 annually for power-user features, and Plus Plus is priced for unusually large account collections. The practical value depends on how many app switches and separate subscriptions Beeper actually eliminates for you.
The bottom line on Automattic’s bet
Automattic did not simply buy an iMessage workaround or keep two independent chat apps. It acquired Beeper after buying Texts, combined the teams and is building one cross-network product under the Beeper name. That product is more credible than the original “two apps” headline suggests, but it is still dependent on the technical and policy decisions of every network it aggregates. Treat Beeper as a convenience layer: potentially valuable for a multi-network inbox, never a guarantee that native apps are no longer necessary.
