For many eligible Amazon.com items, you can ship the order directly to another person by selecting the recipient’s address, marking the item as a gift, and completing the available gift options at checkout. You can usually add a message and gift receipt; physical gift wrapping is a separate service available only for eligible products.
How to send an Amazon item as a gift
- Choose the item. Confirm the size, color, quantity, seller, fulfillment method, delivery estimate, and return information before adding it to your cart.
- Open your cart. Select “This is a gift” or, depending on the interface, “This order contains a gift.” Some product pages also show “Add a Gift Receipt for Easy Returns.”
- Proceed to checkout. Gift options are normally completed during checkout rather than by simply adding an item to the cart.
- Choose the recipient’s address. Select an existing address or choose “Add a new address.” Enter the recipient’s name, street address, apartment or unit, city, state, ZIP code, and telephone number if Amazon requests one.
- Open “Add Gift Options.” Add the message, choose gift wrapping if offered, and select or confirm the gift-receipt option.
- Review every detail. Check each item’s destination, quantity, delivery date, seller, gift settings, payment method, and total.
- Place the order. After ordering, monitor the shipment in Your Orders. Amazon says order tracking can include delivery status and, in some cases, a delivery photo. See Amazon’s guide to the gift workflow at About Amazon.
Amazon’s wording and available controls can differ between the desktop site, Shopping app, country, seller, fulfillment method, shipping address, and account. Treat the labels above as the usual Amazon.com variants, not permanent interface names.

How to make sure it ships to the recipient
Marking an item as a gift does not change its shipping destination. Amazon may keep your default address unless you deliberately select the recipient’s address. The final review screen is your last opportunity to catch this mistake.
- Confirm the full name and address shown beside every item or shipment.
- Check apartment, suite, building, and access details.
- Review the delivery estimate for that specific address; same-day, one-day, or two-day service is not universal.
- If ordering from a Wish List, verify the list’s selected shipping address rather than assuming your own default address is being replaced.
Amazon specifically advises changing the mailing address when sending a gift directly to someone else: Amazon’s gift-buying guide.

How to add a gift message
Inside “Add Gift Options,” Amazon may request the recipient’s name, the sender’s name, and a personal message. Include your name unless you intentionally want the recipient to guess who sent it.
- Keep passwords, payment details, private customer information, and jokes that could be misunderstood by someone handling the package out of the message.
- Follow any character or formatting limits displayed at checkout.
- Use the preview or confirmation shown by Amazon; the message may be printed or included with the shipment, and placement can vary.
- For digital products, the message and delivery method may be different from those for a physical parcel.
Amazon identifies “Add Gift Options” as the place to add a gift message and related options: Amazon’s official guide.
How gift receipts work
A normal invoice or receipt can contain purchase information and prices. A gift receipt is intended to let the recipient return or exchange an unsuitable gift without presenting the price in the usual way. Amazon recommends including one for that reason.

A gift receipt does not create unlimited return rights. Eligibility, deadlines, fees, seller terms, category restrictions, marketplace, and whether the product is digital all matter. Use the order-specific return information shown in Amazon rather than promising a universal return period.
Depending on the order, Amazon may provide a printed gift receipt, digital receipt, or another price-free packing document. Select and confirm the option that the checkout screen actually offers.
How to add Amazon gift wrapping
- Mark the item as a gift.
- Open “Add Gift Options.”
- If offered, select gift wrap or a gift bag.
- Review the additional charge, if any, and save the choice.
Gift wrapping is separate from the gift designation. Amazon says wrapping is limited to eligible items and that pricing varies with the item’s size and shape: Amazon’s gift guidance.

- Some products arrive in ordinary Amazon packaging even when marked as gifts.
- Manufacturer packaging may reveal the contents.
- A message or gift receipt can remain available even when physical wrapping is not.
Do not assume that selecting “This is a gift” means the item will be wrapped.
Can you send gifts to several people in one order?
Yes, but treat each recipient as a separate address-and-gift decision. Add the items to the cart, mark the appropriate items as gifts, assign the correct destination to each item or shipment, and inspect the deliveries individually before placing the order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAmazon may split one order into multiple packages with different delivery dates. Gift eligibility, messages, wrapping, and packaging can differ by item. A mixed cart can therefore contain one gift-eligible item and another showing “Gift options not available.” A publicly captured Amazon cart illustrates this item-level treatment: cart example.

Using Wish Lists and Gift Lists
A Wish List or Gift List can reduce address-entry errors and help you choose a requested product. Amazon describes lists as a way to organize desired items and may offer a direct-to-recipient shipping option when you buy from one: Amazon’s list and gift guidance.
- Verify that the list belongs to the intended person.
- Check whether the list’s address is available for selection and confirm it at checkout.
- Recheck color, size, quantity, seller, stock, price, and delivery estimate.
- Do not assume the list has updated; check for duplicates and items that another shopper may already have purchased.
What if gift options are unavailable?
Not every item supports every gift feature. Gift messages, gift receipts, physical wrapping, direct shipping, and digital delivery have separate eligibility rules. Restrictions can result from the item’s size or shape, seller or fulfillment arrangement, digital or customized status, regulated category, subscription format, international shipment, or a mixed order.
- Check whether the item is sold and fulfilled by Amazon or by a third-party seller.
- Try Amazon’s website if you are using the app, or the app if you are using the website.
- Remove the item and add it again.
- Compare another listing or seller, but recheck price, delivery, packaging, and return terms; changing sellers does not guarantee that gift options will appear.
- Look for gift controls during checkout even if the product page has none.
- If wrapping remains unavailable, ship the item directly and use an external card or arrange wrapping yourself.
- Contact Amazon Customer Service when you need an order-specific explanation.
How to send a digital Amazon gift
Digital gifts follow a different process because they normally use an email address or recipient account rather than a street address. Amazon lists eGift cards, Kindle eBooks, and Prime memberships among possible digital gifts: Amazon’s digital-gift guidance.
Best Value
- Gift Card is redeemable towards millions of items storewide at Amazon.com
- Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
- Gift Card is affixed inside a mini envelope
- Free One-Day Shipping (where available)
- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
- eGift cards: choose a denomination and available email or scheduled delivery option at Amazon’s gift-card page.
- Kindle and other digital content: follow the product’s own gifting controls; country, account, device, and marketplace restrictions may apply.
- Prime membership: availability and eligibility are shown on Amazon’s Prime page and may not suit someone who already has membership or uses another marketplace.
Digital delivery may be immediate or scheduled, depending on the product. It does not require—and may not accept—a physical shipping address.

- Confirm the recipient’s address at the final review screen.
- Do not rely on gift marking to provide anonymity. The message, seller paperwork, packaging, account history, or notifications may identify you.
- Avoid a shared Amazon account or household device if order history, email, delivery alerts, or smart-home displays could reveal the purchase.
- Check the product page for manufacturer-packaging disclosures.
- Manage unnecessary delivery notifications when another person can see the account or linked devices.
- Use a neutral delivery location only when the recipient can safely retrieve the parcel.
- Check the delivery date so the package does not arrive before the occasion.
- If using an Amazon Locker or pickup point, confirm that the recipient can access it and that pickup will not spoil the surprise.
Can you add gift options after ordering?
Do not assume that you can add wrapping or a message after checkout. Open Your Orders, select the order, and look for the modification, cancellation, receipt, or return controls available for that order. If no gift-editing option appears, contact Amazon Customer Service before shipment. Once fulfillment has begun, cancellation and reordering—or sending a separate card—may be the practical solution.
Common problems and fixes
The package arrives at your address
The default address was probably left selected. Check the confirmation immediately. If the order has not shipped, use any available cancellation or address-change control; otherwise, plan to forward it or contact Amazon.
The price is visible
Possible causes include failing to mark the item as a gift, a regular invoice, third-party paperwork, shared order access, or packaging that displays purchase information. Review gift settings and avoid sharing order confirmations with the recipient.
Recommended Free Tools
Wrapping or the message is missing
Review the specific item’s gift options. The option may not have been saved, may have been unavailable, or may have applied to a different shipment in a split order. Contact support if the confirmation shows an option that was not delivered.
The recipient cannot return the gift
Check the gift receipt and order-specific return workflow. The item may be outside its applicable window, non-returnable, governed by third-party terms, digital, or missing the information needed to start a return.
Quick Recap
Gift method trade-offs
| Goal | Most suitable approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Send a physical product directly | Recipient address plus gift options | Less opportunity to inspect packaging |
| Hide the price | Mark as gift and confirm the gift receipt | Seller paperwork or shared account access may still reveal details |
| Finish the presentation | Amazon wrapping when eligible | Possible fee and limited availability |
| Send something quickly | Eligible digital gift | Country, account, device, or marketplace restrictions |
| Choose something the recipient wants | Wish List or Gift List | Stock, seller, price, and list status can change |
| Control appearance completely | Ship to yourself, inspect, and wrap | Extra handling, time, and postage |
