Intel announced its acquisition of Rivet Networks on May 20, 2020. Rivet’s engineering team, Killer brand, networking software and traffic-management technology moved into Intel’s Wireless Solutions Group within the Client Computing Group. Killer did not disappear: Intel still lists Killer Wi-Fi and Ethernet products, software and support in 2026. The important qualification is that support is model-specific, and some Rivet-era hardware has been discontinued.

What Intel actually acquired

Intel did not describe the transaction as simply buying a faster wireless-chip competitor. Its announcement focused on Rivet’s software and cloud-based networking capabilities, engineering expertise, gaming-oriented brand and relationships with PC manufacturers. Rivet’s technology covered traffic prioritization, bandwidth utilization and wireless-connection optimization across Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

Intel’s stated plan was to integrate Rivet’s products, including Killer, into its broader PC Wi-Fi portfolio. The acquisition price was not disclosed in the official announcement or contemporaneous reporting (Intel announcement; Tom’s Hardware).

Why Rivet fit Intel’s strategy

Intel already supplied wireless silicon and drivers to PC makers. Rivet added a recognizable performance brand and a software layer that could differentiate otherwise similar adapters. For OEMs, the combination offered one connectivity platform spanning hardware, drivers, traffic controls and gaming-focused positioning.

  • Hardware: radio generation, channel width, antennas, Bluetooth and Ethernet speed.
  • Software: application detection, traffic priorities, bandwidth limits and network diagnostics.
  • OEM integration: validated packages and gaming-system branding.

That rationale explains the deal better than the shorthand “Intel bought Killer.” Intel bought Rivet Networks, whose best-known products included Killer.

What happened to the Killer brand?

Killer became an Intel-owned gaming and performance networking brand rather than an independent company. As of August 18, 2026, Intel’s support material still documents:

Category Examples listed by Intel
Wi-Fi Killer Wi-Fi 7 BE1750 and BE1775; Wi-Fi 6E AX1675; Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 variants
Ethernet Killer E2500, E2600, E3000 and E3100 families
Software Intel Killer Control Center and related driver packages

Intel’s current software and product documentation are available at its Killer wireless support page. Ordinary Intel-branded adapters continue to exist alongside Killer variants; not every Intel adapter is a Killer product.

What Killer software does

On compatible systems, the software can detect applications and websites, assign traffic priorities, set bandwidth limits and provide network visibility. Intel’s AX1675 product brief also describes GameFast, which can pause or deprioritize selected background processes, and DoubleShot Pro, which can coordinate traffic across compatible Killer Wi-Fi and Killer Ethernet adapters (Intel AX1675 brief).

These are traffic-management controls, not a replacement for a better internet connection. Results depend on the router, signal, local congestion, ISP route, server distance, background traffic and the rest of the PC. A prioritization rule may help when one computer is competing with downloads or other traffic, but it cannot fix a distant game server, an overloaded access point or a slow broadband plan. DoubleShot-style features also require compatible adapters and configuration; they do not automatically combine any two network interfaces.

Did Intel preserve Rivet’s products?

At the time of the deal, Intel told Tom’s Hardware it intended to continue selling Rivet’s software technologies and Killer products, subject to evaluation against customer commitments. The longer-term record is more selective: newer Killer generations continued, some older adapters remain on legacy drivers, and other models reached discontinuation.

Intel’s current installation page warns that older Killer products are not supported by the current software. That means a familiar brand name is not enough to establish compatibility. Check the exact adapter model and the computer maker’s package before installing a current release.

A specific example: Killer AX1650

Intel’s March 26, 2026 notice says the Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (x/w) is no longer manufactured. It identifies Killer Performance Suite version 40.26.220.2124 and Wi-Fi driver version 24.20.2.1 as the final versions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 (Intel discontinuation notice). The associated product-change notice records a May 10, 2024 last-order date, June 14, 2024 non-cancelable/non-returnable date and June 28, 2024 final shipment (Intel PCN814635). Discontinuation does not necessarily remove every driver immediately, but it ends the expectation of new hardware support.

What existing Killer owners should do

1. Identify the exact adapter

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Record the complete Killer or Intel model number.
  4. Check the PC manufacturer’s support page before replacing its driver.

OEM packages may include system-specific power, firmware and radio settings. Intel recommends checking the manufacturer before using a generic package (Intel support guidance).

2. Check Windows

  1. Open Start, type winver and press Enter.
  2. Compare the Windows version and adapter model with Intel’s compatibility information.

The current Universal Windows Driver guidance references Windows 10 version 1803 and newer current Windows versions, subject to product compatibility. Do not install it solely because the device name contains “Killer.”

3. Install only a compatible package

  1. Download from Intel’s Download Center or the PC manufacturer.
  2. Run the installer and reboot if requested.
  3. Open Intel Killer Control Center, or the applicable Killer application, and confirm that the adapter is detected.

4. Address high CPU use or uninstall problems

Intel documents cases where older Killer software causes high CPU usage or becomes difficult to update or remove. Its temporary workaround is:

  1. Press Start, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find Intel Killer Network Service or Rivet Bandwidth Control.
  3. Double-click the service, choose Stop, then click OK.
  4. Perform a clean installation of the latest compatible package.

Stopping the service can disable Killer-specific optimization while basic connectivity continues. Treat it as troubleshooting, not a universal performance recommendation (Intel troubleshooting article).

What the acquisition means for buyers

Killer is not automatically worth paying more for. Evaluate the complete system:

  • Wireless generation: Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 capability may matter more than the label.
  • Router: An older router cannot deliver the full benefit of a newer adapter.
  • Antennas and signal: Laptop antenna placement and desktop antenna quality can outweigh branding.
  • Ethernet pairing: DoubleShot features require compatible Killer Ethernet and Wi-Fi hardware.
  • Software preference: Users wanting minimal background services may prefer standard Intel drivers.
  • Actual workload: Prioritization is most relevant when local background traffic competes with interactive traffic.
  • Support: Verify that the exact model is supported and that the OEM provides a validated package.

A standard Intel adapter can be the cleaner choice when the PC is stable, the router is the limiting factor or the buyer does not need traffic controls. Improving router placement, using Ethernet or reducing local congestion may be more practical than paying for a Killer logo.

The long-term verdict

Intel successfully absorbed Rivet Networks into its PC-connectivity business. The deal brought Intel a gaming-oriented brand, traffic-management software, engineering talent and OEM relationships that complemented Intel’s wireless hardware. Killer remains an Intel product family in 2026, including current Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6E and Ethernet listings.

That continuity is not a lifetime-support promise. Intel’s support is model-specific, current software excludes some older adapters, and products such as the AX1650 have reached end-of-life milestones. For owners and buyers, the exact adapter, driver package, router and software needs matter more than the Killer name alone.
