If anyone tells you to buy or load a Walmart gift card and then give them its number, PIN, barcode, activation code, or a photograph, treat it as a scam. Gift cards are for gifts, not for taxes, fines, bills, bail, prizes, technical support, refunds, or emergency payments. Stop contact, do not share the card details, and report the incident promptly if you already paid.

The rule that identifies most Walmart gift-card scams

Legitimate government agencies, utilities, employers, technology companies, retailers, and family members do not demand payment with a Walmart gift card. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says scammers can use the card number and PIN to take the balance even when you still have the physical card.

Walmart also warns customers not to provide prepaid- or gift-card information to people they do not know, send card images, or trust unsolicited offers for “free” gift cards. Caller ID can be manipulated, so a familiar name or number is not proof that the caller is Walmart.

Warning signs to stop on

  • The contact creates an emergency, threatens arrest, account closure, service shutoff, or another immediate consequence.
  • It claims to represent the IRS, Social Security, FBI, police, a court, Walmart, Microsoft, Apple, a utility, or another trusted organization.
  • It tells you which retailer to visit, how many cards to buy, or exactly how much to load.
  • It keeps you on the phone or in a chat while you shop, or tells you to visit several stores to avoid questions.
  • It asks for the card number, PIN, barcode, activation code, receipt, or a photo of the front or back.
  • It demands secrecy or says you must act before you can verify the story.
  • It promises a refund, prize, job payment, investment return, or overpayment in exchange for gift-card details.

Common Walmart gift-card scam stories

Government, police, or court impersonation

A caller says you owe taxes, have a warrant, or must pay bail. No legitimate government agency accepts gift cards as payment. End the call and contact the agency through a number or website you find independently.

Visa Physical Gift Card $200 (plus $6.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

Utility shutoff threats

The scammer threatens to disconnect electricity, gas, water, or internet unless you read out card numbers. A gift-card demand is not a legitimate utility-billing procedure.

Fake technical support

A pop-up or supposed support representative claims your computer is infected and requests gift cards for repairs. Real technology companies do not require gift cards for technical support.

Family-emergency and grandparent scams

The caller pretends to be a child, grandchild, friend, lawyer, or police officer. Voice cloning can sound convincing, but urgency and secrecy remain warning signs. Call the relative through a known number, not the number supplied by the caller.

Prize, lottery, or sweepstakes demands

You are told you won but must pay taxes, processing, or shipping costs with gift cards. Paying to receive a supposed prize is a scam.

Romance requests

An online contact claims to need emergency help and asks for cards. Do not send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person, regardless of how persuasive the relationship feels.

Fake checks, jobs, and mystery shopping

A check or job offer appears to pay you, then you are instructed to return part of it through gift cards. The check may later be rejected, leaving you responsible for the amount sent. Walmart warns against depositing checks from unknown senders that require money to be returned.

Fake Walmart promotions

Fraudsters use Walmart’s name, logo, surveys, social posts, texts, or websites to promise free cards or collect information. Do not click or respond to suspicious links, ads, automated calls, or messages.

Tampered cards on display

Reject cards with damaged coverings, an exposed PIN, a missing sticker, an altered barcode, or other unusual packaging. Tell a cashier or manager.

Amazon eGift Card - Amazon Logo
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
  • Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.

What to do before you pay or share information

  1. Stop communicating. Hang up, stop replying, and do not click links supplied by the contact.
  2. Do not buy or load the card.
  3. Do not read, photograph, or send the number, PIN, barcode, activation code, or receipt.
  4. Verify independently. Use a known phone number, an official website you navigate to yourself, a bank statement, or an established family contact.
  5. Tell another person. A second opinion can break the urgency and secrecy.
  6. If you are in a store, tell the cashier or manager who directed the purchase. Their questions may be fraud prevention, not an inconvenience.

If you bought, loaded, or disclosed the card

Purchased but no number or PIN shared

Keep the card and receipt, do not send any details, contact Walmart through its official fraud channel if the purchase was prompted by a suspicious contact, and monitor the balance and payment account.

Number or PIN shared

  1. Call Walmart gift-card support immediately at 1-888-537-5503.
  2. Explain that the card was involved in a scam and provide the card number, receipt, amount, date, and transaction details.
  3. Ask whether Walmart can place a hold on remaining funds, investigate transactions, or issue a replacement or refund. Recovery is not guaranteed.
  4. Report the fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  5. Report to local police or your state attorney general when appropriate.
  6. Preserve screenshots, phone numbers, emails, usernames, packaging, receipts, and payment records.
  7. If bank or payment-account information was also disclosed, call that institution using its official number.

Report even if the balance is already gone or the incident is old. Speed may improve the issuer’s ability to review remaining funds, but no recovery is assured. Be wary of anyone promising to recover the money for an upfront fee or another gift card.

How to report related fraud

  • Walmart gift card: 1-888-537-5503, using the official Walmart fraud guidance at Walmart’s fraud-alert page.
  • FTC: ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • Police or attorney general: Report threats, identity theft, or substantial losses to local law enforcement and your state attorney general.
  • Bank or card issuer: Contact them if account numbers, online-banking credentials, or payment-card details were exposed.

An unrecognized Walmart.com order or charge is a separate issue from gift-card fraud. Use Walmart’s guidance for unrecognized Walmart.com charges or orders, as well as your bank or payment-card support.

Buy a Walmart gift card more safely

  • Buy from Walmart or another trusted, authorized retailer—not an online auction or unknown marketplace.
  • Inspect the packaging before paying. Reject exposed PINs, damaged coverings, altered barcodes, or missing stickers.
  • Keep the original card and receipt. You may photograph them for your own records, but never send those images to an unsolicited contact.
  • Choose to give a legitimate gift directly to the recipient rather than sending its number to a third party.

Walmart gift card versus Walmart Visa gift card

These are different products with different support channels. The Walmart fraud guidance and 1-888-537-5503 number apply to ordinary Walmart gift-card scams. A Walmart Visa gift card is a prepaid Visa product with separate terms; its cardholder agreement lists 1-866-633-9096 for lost, stolen, or suspected-fraud issues. Check the phone number printed on the exact card or its official support page before calling, and do not assume one number serves every Walmart-branded card. See the Walmart Visa cardholder agreement.

Questions people ask after a scam

Can scammers use the card if I still have it?

Yes. The FTC says the number and PIN can allow access to the loaded funds without the scammer possessing the physical card.

Can Walmart refund the money?

Contact Walmart immediately and ask whether remaining funds can be frozen or refunded. The issuer may investigate, but a refund is not automatic or guaranteed.

What if I only gave the receipt?

Keep the card and contact Walmart anyway. A receipt can contain transaction details useful for an investigation, and you should not provide any further information.

What if I bought the card but did not send the PIN?

Do not send it. Retain the card and receipt, monitor the balance, and report the suspicious solicitation to Walmart.

Can a government agency ask for gift cards?

No legitimate government agency requires gift cards for taxes, fines, bail, or account protection.

What should I do with altered packaging?

Do not buy or use the card. Show it to a cashier or manager and select a different card.

Is a Walmart Visa gift card reported the same way?

No. Use the support information for that exact prepaid Visa product, including the number printed on the card; do not substitute the ordinary Walmart gift-card number.

How can I help an older relative?
