Amazon announced in September 2024 that most corporate employees whose jobs could be done away from the workplace would be expected to work from an assigned office five days a week starting January 2, 2025. Employees organized opposition through an anonymous survey, internal Slack channels and other advocacy. The available reporting documents a substantial backlash, but does not verify that Amazon rescinded the companywide expectation.
What Amazon announced
CEO Andy Jassy described the change as a return to Amazon’s pre-pandemic operating model. In his official September 2024 memo, he said most corporate employees would be expected to work in an assigned office five days per week beginning January 2, 2025.
Jassy said Amazon believed employees worked better together in person, citing collaboration, brainstorming, invention, culture, connection, faster decisions and alignment with customers and teams. Those were management’s stated reasons, not independently demonstrated outcomes.
| Policy detail | What the public memo said |
|---|---|
| Who was targeted | Primarily corporate employees in roles that could be performed remotely |
| Schedule | Five days per week in an assigned office |
| Start date | January 2, 2025 |
| Workspaces | Assigned desks planned for Puget Sound and Arlington; some European locations could retain agile desks |
| Exceptions | Examples included illness, a child’s illness, family or home emergencies, customer or partner travel, isolated coding or project work, and approved Remote Work Exceptions |
The policy was not an order for every Amazon worker to sit in an office five days a week. Fulfillment-center, transportation, physical-store, data-center and many hardware-development employees already worked primarily at physical sites. The announcement chiefly changed expectations for office-based corporate functions such as technology, sales, advertising, finance and human resources.

Who could still work remotely?
The memo preserved limited flexibility. Managers could allow remote work for specified extenuating circumstances, and formally approved Remote Work Exceptions could continue through the relevant leadership chain, including approval associated with an S-team leader. The examples in the memo were not necessarily an exhaustive legal or human-resources list.
- Employees with an approved Remote Work Exception.
- Workers dealing with illness, a child’s illness or an emergency.
- Employees traveling for customers or partners.
- People doing work that genuinely required short periods of isolation, such as certain coding or project tasks.
- Employees in roles that were never compatible with ordinary remote work.
The public announcement did not fully explain how every team would measure attendance, handle a manager and employee in different locations, or enforce noncompliance. Local organizations and employment rules could also affect implementation.

What employees did to oppose the five-day rule
An anonymous internal survey
Employees distributed an anonymous survey through internal Slack channels and a remote-work advocacy network. Contemporary reporting described hundreds of responses and an average satisfaction score of about 1.4 out of 5. Organizers said they planned to share the results with Jassy and other executives. The survey indicates the intensity of opposition among respondents, but it was not a random, companywide poll.

Employees cited recurring commuting costs, reduced flexibility, family obligations, distributed teams and doubts that simply being in an office would improve productivity. Some said they would spend the day on video calls with colleagues in other locations, while others reported that open-plan offices were more distracting than their home workspaces. Reporting from TechCrunch and Fortune attributed those objections to employees and survey responses.

Fortune reported that a remote-work advocacy Slack channel had more than 30,000 members. That figure describes channel membership, not the number of people who signed a petition or actively opposed the five-day policy. Slack discussions gave employees a way to coordinate complaints, circulate the survey and press management for reconsideration.
The earlier petition that is often confused with this dispute
Reports of a roughly 30,000-signature petition refer to the 2023 three-day return-to-office policy, not proof that 30,000 employees petitioned against the 2024 five-day mandate. The petition and a six-page memo were reported by SHRM and other outlets; Amazon HR rejected the request to reverse the earlier policy.

That distinction matters. “Employees begged management” is a vivid description of pleas and internal advocacy, but the available evidence does not establish a single formal petition directed specifically at the five-day announcement.
What employees said was at stake
- Commute and housing costs: Longer journeys add transportation expenses and unpaid travel time; some workers faced relocation or new housing problems.
- Care responsibilities: Childcare and elder-care arrangements built around hybrid work could become harder or more expensive.
- Distributed collaboration: Teams could be assigned to an office even when managers or key colleagues worked elsewhere, leaving employees on video calls from conference rooms.
- Personal productivity: Respondents said open-plan offices, interruptions and mandatory presence could make concentrated work harder.
- Trust and morale: Some employees viewed the change as withdrawal of flexibility they had relied on when accepting jobs and organizing their lives.
- Recruiting and retention: Workers warned that a rigid rule could push experienced employees toward employers offering hybrid or remote arrangements.
These are reported employee views, not findings that apply uniformly to all Amazon workers.

| Finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 48% had applied for jobs outside Amazon | A respondent result, not evidence that 48% of all corporate employees were job-hunting |
| 68% said they were somewhat or very likely to leave within the following year | Reported intention, not a count of completed resignations |
| More than eight in ten expected lower personal productivity | A perception measured in the survey, not an independent productivity test |
| More than three-quarters would not recommend a friend apply | A measure of respondent sentiment and employer appeal |
Because recruitment was online and non-random, people with strong opinions may be overrepresented. The results are useful evidence of concern among participating workers, but cannot establish companywide turnover or productivity effects.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did Amazon reverse the mandate?
No formal companywide reversal is verified by the available reporting. The sources document Amazon’s five-day announcement, the January 2, 2025 implementation date, and organized employee opposition. They do not show that Amazon rescinded the expectation, universally relaxed it or applied one identical rule in every team and country.
Individual exceptions, local practices and team-level decisions do not by themselves prove a corporate reversal. A definitive update would require a current official Amazon memo, credible reporting or direct internal documentation.

Why the conflict mattered beyond Amazon
A sharp shift in the employer–employee bargain
Amazon moved from pandemic-era flexibility to a three-day baseline in 2023 and then to five days in 2024. For employees hired or relocated under hybrid assumptions, the change represented a material alteration in time, cost and family logistics.
A test of management’s evidence
Amazon’s case rests on collaboration, invention, culture and speed. Those benefits may be plausible for some teams, particularly work involving physical products, intensive mentoring or sensitive coordination, but the public announcement did not provide outcome data proving that five days in an office improved performance.
A question of worker leverage
Highly paid corporate employees can still face substantial switching costs when a large employer changes location and attendance rules. The surveys and Slack organizing showed workers using collective communication to challenge that decision, while the absence of a verified reversal illustrated the limits of informal internal pressure without a formal bargaining mechanism.
The Bottom Line
Amazon announced a five-day office expectation for most remote-capable corporate employees beginning January 2, 2025. Employees responded with surveys, Slack organizing and other appeals, but the widely cited 30,000-signature petition belonged to the earlier three-day dispute. The available evidence shows serious opposition—not a verified companywide reversal.
