Amazon first unveiled the Dash Cart on July 14, 2020, as a smart cart that could identify groceries, show a running total and let shoppers bypass a conventional checkout line. The important current update is a redesigned cart rolling out at selected Whole Foods Market stores in 2026, even as Amazon closes its own Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores and concentrates physical grocery investment on Whole Foods.
The result is not a nationwide cashierless-store network. Dash Cart is becoming a targeted checkout and shopping-assistance layer inside selected supermarkets.
What Amazon announced in 2020
The original Amazon Dash Cart was announced on July 14, 2020. Amazon designed it for small- to medium-sized trips—roughly one or two grocery bags—and initially targeted its planned grocery store in Woodland Hills, California. The cart was positioned as an alternative to express-checkout and self-checkout queues, not as a replacement for every checkout option.
Unlike Amazon Go, which uses cameras and sensors installed throughout a store, Dash Cart puts much of the sensing and customer interaction on the cart. The original system used cameras, weight sensors, a scale, a scanner and a screen. GeekWire’s 2020 report described the product’s launch location, hardware and intended trip size.

How Dash Cart works
- Identify the shopper. The original flow began by scanning a QR code in the Amazon app. The exact setup can vary by store and model.
- Add products. Shoppers scan packaged goods or place items in the cart, while cameras, weight sensors and product data help associate the item with the digital basket.
- Track the total. The cart’s screen displays prices and a running total. It can also connect to an Alexa Shopping List, show store-map information and present nearby deals.
- Correct the basket. If an item is removed, the system is intended to update the digital basket. Recognition or weight discrepancies may require employee assistance.
- Exit through the Dash Cart lane. The shopper uses a designated lane rather than unloading everything at a standard register.
- Pay and receive a receipt. The original design charged the stored payment method linked to the Amazon account. The redesigned model supports Amazon-account payment, contactless credit-card payment and mobile payments, with a digital receipt.
This is more precise than calling the experience “checkout-free”: the shopper still interacts with the cart, uses a specific exit lane and may need account or payment authentication.
What changed in the 2026 redesign
Amazon announced a redesigned Dash Cart in 2026 after customer feedback and what it says were thousands of shopping trips. According to Amazon, the new version:
- Uses upgraded computer vision for faster barcode capture.
- Has improved sensors for tracking the cart’s position in the store.
- Adds an integrated scale for produce.
- Supports more payment methods.
- Is 25% lighter than the previous model, according to Amazon.
- Provides 40% more capacity, according to Amazon.
- Self-charges while parked.
- Places the scanner more prominently and keeps prices and the running total on the built-in screen.
- Offers Alexa Shopping List integration, interactive store mapping and personalized nearby deals.
Amazon also reports that more than nine out of ten customers were satisfied. That is a company-reported result, not an independently documented survey. Independent GeekWire coverage referencing a 2024 test found the earlier cart cumbersome and difficult to learn, while noting the usefulness of its running-total display and Alexa integration. That experience should not automatically be treated as a verdict on the redesigned model.

Amazon says the carts are planned for dozens of additional Whole Foods locations across the United States by the end of 2026. That is an expansion plan, not a guarantee that every Whole Foods store will have Dash Carts by that date. Fleet size and availability can also vary by store.
Check the individual store before planning a trip; a participating location may have only a limited number of carts, and conventional checkout remains an alternative.
Dash Cart versus Just Walk Out
These are separate technologies with different customer workflows.
| Feature | Dash Cart | Just Walk Out |
|---|---|---|
| Main hardware | Cart-mounted cameras, sensors, scanner, screen and, in the current model, a produce scale | Store-installed cameras and sensors plus checkout and payment systems |
| Customer interaction | The shopper uses the cart and generally scans or confirms products | The shopper takes products and exits; the store system builds the basket |
| Typical setting | Selected grocery stores, currently Whole Foods locations | Licensed third-party stores, venues, hospitals and facilities |
| Amazon’s current strategy | Selective deployment in Whole Foods | Primarily a technology-licensing business, plus internal breakroom use |
Amazon says Just Walk Out operates in more than 360 third-party locations across five countries and in more than 40 North American fulfillment-center breakrooms. Its continued licensing does not mean Amazon is reviving a large chain of Amazon Go grocery stores.

Why Amazon’s retail strategy changed
In January 2026, Amazon announced that it would close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and redirect investment toward Whole Foods and online grocery delivery. Amazon said it had not found the distinctive customer experience and economic model needed for large-scale expansion. Some locations are being converted to Whole Foods stores, while Amazon Fresh continues online where the service operates. Amazon’s announcement explains the store closures and strategic shift.
That makes Dash Cart’s current role narrower than early coverage suggested. The cart is no longer evidence of Amazon building a nationwide network of Amazon-branded cashierless supermarkets. It is a hardware-and-software layer that can be added selectively to an established grocery chain.
Potential benefits for shoppers
- Shorter queues: Participating shoppers can avoid unloading at a conventional register when carts and lanes are available.
- Budget visibility: The running total helps shoppers monitor spending before reaching the exit.
- Shopping-list support: Alexa integration can bring an existing list into the store experience.
- Navigation and offers: Store maps and nearby deals can reduce searching and surface promotions.
- Produce handling: The integrated scale is intended to make loose-produce weighing part of the cart workflow.
- Less unloading: Items can remain in the cart instead of being transferred to a checkout belt.
- More payment choice: Amazon-account payment, card tap and mobile payments are supported in the redesigned model.
Limitations and failure points
Trip size and product mix
The original cart was aimed at small to medium trips. The 2026 model’s 40% capacity increase improves that fit but does not guarantee that every cart suits a full family shop. Packaged, individually barcoded goods are generally simpler for an automated workflow than loose produce, deli items or products requiring an employee.
Recognition and removal errors
Computer vision and weight sensing can misidentify products, substitutions or items placed close together. Produce adds weighing and identification complexity. Removing an item also requires the digital basket to register the change correctly.

Availability and fallback
A store may have fewer smart carts than shoppers want. A cart can also require troubleshooting, payment authentication or staff intervention. Traditional lanes and employee assistance therefore remain important even when a Dash Cart lane is operating.
Phone, account and payment requirements
The original experience used an Amazon-app QR-code login. Current payment options are broader, but shoppers should confirm the local setup, bring a supported payment method and be prepared for account or mobile-wallet requirements.
Accessibility
Public information does not establish how every store’s cart height, weight, screen position, scanning process or app dependence works for shoppers with disabilities. Those details require store-level verification and staff support.
Privacy and operations
The experience links purchases and cart activity to an account or payment method and uses cameras, sensors and location information inside the store. Amazon said in 2020 that personalized targeting was theoretically possible but was not the focus. Shoppers who are uncomfortable with that data linkage may prefer a conventional lane. The technology also brings hardware, maintenance, charging and integration costs; self-charging addresses one operational burden but not all of them.

What this means for Amazon and shoppers
For Amazon, Dash Cart trades the cost of store-wide overhead-camera infrastructure for a more contained cart fleet, while introducing its own hardware, maintenance and training requirements. For shoppers, the best use case is a participating store, a quick or medium-sized basket, a preference for seeing the total while shopping and a willingness to interact with the cart.
The strategic signal is the most important point: Amazon is keeping and refining the cart technology while shrinking the Amazon-owned store experiment around it. Whole Foods provides the physical grocery network; delivery remains a major focus; and Just Walk Out continues mainly as a third-party technology business.
Dash Cart therefore eliminates the traditional checkout-line step for eligible users, not checkout itself. Its value depends on local availability, basket complexity, payment setup and whether the cart’s convenience outweighs the learning curve and possible error handling.
