The two prices were $600 apart because these are fundamentally different tablets: an entry-level iPad for everyday use and a premium OLED tablet for demanding creative and professional work.

The report described the $299 price as a record low at that time, a claim attributable to that coverage rather than a guarantee of the lowest price ever.

Are $299 and $899 current Amazon prices?
No current price is established by the historical report. It covered the 2024 Labor Day sale, and neither figure should be presented as an active October 2026 offer without checking Amazon immediately before publication or purchase. Amazon may change prices without notice, attach a discount to only one color or storage tier, or show a different price for a cellular, renewed or third-party listing.

What you get for $299: the 10th-generation iPad
Hardware and everyday use
The discounted model uses Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, 64GB of storage and Wi‑Fi connectivity. Its 10.86-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD has a 2360×1640 resolution, 264 pixels per inch and 500-nit maximum brightness. Touch ID is built into the top button. Apple’s specifications are listed at Apple Support.
That combination is well suited to streaming, web browsing, reading, schoolwork, video calls, casual games, note-taking and ordinary document tasks. It is not a cut-down version of the Pro’s display or connectivity system; it is a lower-cost design intended for lighter workloads.

The 64GB question
64GB can work for a light user who streams most media and stores files in the cloud. Games, downloaded shows, photos, offline documents and years of app data can consume it quickly. The 10th-generation iPad was also sold in 256GB, but that capacity was not the $299 deal configuration. If you expect to keep many large files locally, price the 256GB model or an alternative iPad before deciding that the headline discount is the cheapest long-term option.
Pencil and port limitations
The iPad supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the first-generation Apple Pencil. Using the first-generation Pencil requires a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter for pairing and charging. What you get for $899: the 11-inch M4 iPad Pro
Premium display and performance platform
The reported Pro deal was specifically the 11-inch-class, 256GB, Wi‑Fi model with Apple’s M4 chip. It uses an Ultra Retina XDR tandem-OLED display with ProMotion, supports up to 1,000 nits full-screen SDR/HDR brightness and up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness. Those features matter for HDR video, illustration, photo work and users who notice smoother scrolling and pen response.
Connectivity, authentication and audio
Compared with the base iPad, the Pro adds Face ID, four-speaker audio, four studio-quality microphones and a USB-C connector with Thunderbolt/USB 4. Faster peripheral and external-drive connections are useful for large media projects, high-speed storage and demanding multitasking. The Pro’s premium is not simply for a faster benchmark score. It pays for four times the starting storage, the M4 platform, OLED contrast and HDR brightness, ProMotion, Face ID, stronger audio capture and playback, Thunderbolt/USB 4 and Apple Pencil Pro support. Those capabilities are most valuable for video editing, graphics, music production, illustration, large files, external drives and demanding multitasking. Choose the 10th-generation iPad when
- Your priority is the lowest entry price.
- You mainly stream, browse, read, study, call, play casual games or take basic notes.
- 64GB is sufficient or you are comfortable managing files in cloud storage.
- You do not need ProMotion, an OLED display, Face ID, Thunderbolt or Apple Pencil Pro.
Choose the M4 iPad Pro when
- You need a high-end display and smooth ProMotion scrolling.
- Your work involves professional creative apps, large files, external storage or fast peripherals.
- 256GB as the starting capacity is important.
- You want Apple Pencil Pro compatibility or expect greater hardware headroom over several years.
Check alternatives before buying either
The two historical deals sit at opposite ends of Apple’s tablet range. If you want more than 64GB but do not need OLED and Thunderbolt, compare a current iPad Air or newer base iPad. If your priority is keyboard-first productivity, include the cost of a keyboard and compare the complete setup. Current models may offer a better value than an older product at an unverified price.

Accessories and total-cost checks
- Stylus: The base iPad needs either the USB-C Pencil or a first-generation Pencil plus adapter; the Pro can use Apple Pencil Pro.
