What Is TeslaCoin (TES)? What Regulators Say About Its Legitimacy and Scam Risks

TeslaCoin (TES) is not established as one official Tesla cryptocurrency. Learn what the DFPI and FCA documented, why withdrawal promises are risky, and how to verify an exact offer.

TeslaCoin (TES) is not established by the reviewed regulators as one official cryptocurrency, Tesla product, or token with a verified issuer and contract. California regulators describe a resident’s report involving a Tesladigital.us investment pitch, while the UK regulator separately warns about the unauthorised domain teslacointrade.online. Those records concern specific promotions; they do not prove that every token or website using “TeslaCoin” or “TES” is the same project—or that every one is fraudulent.

What TeslaCoin (TES) means

The name “TeslaCoin” can refer to more than one online offer. The official sources reviewed here do not identify a canonical TES blockchain, contract address, legal issuer, exchange listing, or current market price. That means a ticker alone is not enough to identify what you are being offered.

It is also not a Tesla product. In its Crypto Scam Tracker, California’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) says the reported offering should not be confused with Tesla or its ongoing products and services: “This is not to be confused with Tesla or any of its ongoing products and services at https://www.tesla.com/.”

What regulators have actually documented

The California DFPI report

The DFPI Crypto Scam Tracker summarizes a California resident’s report about an offering promoted through Tesladigital.us. The pitch presented “Teslacoin” (TES) as an early investment. According to the resident’s account, the claimed purchase price was $0.95 per share; the website later displayed a claimed value of $17.57 and said the shares were restricted until the offering went public. The resident reported being unable to recover the funds, and the DFPI says the website is no longer operational.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Those dollar amounts are claims described in one consumer report, not independently verified market prices or proof that another TES-labelled token is identical. The DFPI’s entry is evidence of a reported Tesla-branded investment promotion, not a finding about every asset using the name.

The UK FCA warning

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) separately lists teslacointrade.online as a firm that may be providing or promoting financial services without FCA authorisation. The warning was first published on 22 May 2025 and updated on 27 May 2025. The FCA says the firm may target people in the UK and that customers dealing with it would not receive the Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme protections in the stated circumstances.

This warning names a particular firm and domain. It does not establish that teslacointrade.online is the same operator described by the DFPI, nor that every TES offer has the same status.

Is TeslaCoin legitimate or a scam?

The safest conclusion is that a Tesla-branded TES investment offer is high risk until its exact issuer, authorisation, token and withdrawal arrangements are independently verified. The regulator records do not establish one legitimate, established TeslaCoin cryptocurrency—but they also do not prove that every asset using the label is fraudulent.

Do not describe TES as Tesla-backed, an official Tesla investment, a confirmed security, or a single established cryptocurrency without evidence tied to the exact legal entity and contract address. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission notes that “There is no widely-accepted standard for placing a value on a particular digital coin or token” in its customer advisory.

Warning signs in a TeslaCoin offer

  • “Early” access or guaranteed upside: The DFPI-reported pitch combined an early-opportunity framing with a claimed increase in value.
  • Restricted withdrawals: Being told that funds or “shares” cannot be withdrawn until a future listing or public offering is a material danger sign.
  • Brand borrowing: Use of Tesla’s name, logo, likeness or implied endorsement does not establish a relationship with Tesla.
  • Unclear identity: No verifiable legal entity, responsible people, physical address, regulator authorisation or independently confirmed contract.
  • Pressure to add money or recruit: The FCA says online trading scams may display initial returns, encourage further deposits or referrals, and later suspend accounts or stop returns. Its examples are general scam patterns, not a finding that each occurred in the DFPI report. See the FCA’s online trading scams guidance.
  • Celebrity or social-media promotion: The FCA warns that fake endorsements and online advertising can be used to attract victims.

How to check a specific TES offer before paying

  1. Identify the legal counterparty. Record the company’s legal name, registration details, directors, domain and country. A brand name or ticker is not an issuer.
  2. Check authorisation independently. Use the relevant regulator’s own website, typed into your browser. UK readers can use the FCA’s Warning List and firm-checking information. The FCA explicitly says that if a firm is not on its Warning List, “it may still be unauthorised or be a scam.”
  3. Verify the token technically. Obtain the network and full contract address from an independent block explorer or other reliable source. Match the address across multiple unrelated references; never rely only on a promoter’s screenshot.
  4. Establish what ownership provides. Ask whether the token grants a service right, governance vote, revenue claim or nothing beyond the ability to trade. Read transfer, lock-up, redemption and custody terms.
  5. Test the withdrawal story. Look for a documented process, fees, limits, processing times and the entity responsible. Never send extra “tax,” “unlock,” “verification” or “recovery” money to release an existing balance.
  6. Assess the valuation claim. A dashboard number or promised listing is not a market price. Compare independent trading activity, liquidity and transparent pricing; there is no universal standard for valuing an individual token.

Can you withdraw a TeslaCoin investment?

No general withdrawal answer can be established because there is no verified, single TeslaCoin issuer or network. A promoter’s promise that withdrawals will open after a public offering is not evidence that they will. In the DFPI-described case, the resident reported being unable to recover funds and the promoted website was no longer operational.

If a platform blocks a withdrawal, stop sending money and preserve evidence. Contact your bank, card issuer, exchange or payment provider immediately to ask what protection or recall options apply. Save messages, emails, website copies, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, invoices and payment records. Report the firm to the relevant regulator and law-enforcement agency. The FCA says certain payments made on or after 7 October 2024 may fall under protections introduced by the Payment Systems Regulator, depending on the payment method and circumstances; its warning page explains the limits.

What to do if you already paid

  • Stop communicating through links or phone numbers supplied by the promoter until you have independently verified who you are contacting.
  • Secure email, exchange and banking accounts, change reused passwords and enable multifactor authentication.
  • Tell your payment provider promptly that you suspect investment fraud; provide transaction references and the recipient details.
  • Report the website and individuals to the appropriate financial regulator and police or cybercrime reporting service.
  • Reject anyone demanding an upfront fee to “recover” cryptocurrency. A recovery promise is another common fraud route, and no recovery outcome is guaranteed.

How the two regulator records differ

Record What it concerns What it establishes
California DFPI Crypto Scam Tracker A resident’s report about a Tesladigital.us TES offering The reported pitch, claimed values, inability to recover funds and the site’s reported closure; it does not verify a market price or cover every TES token.
UK FCA warning, 22–27 May 2025 The named domain teslacointrade.online The FCA’s concern that the firm may be unauthorised and targeting UK consumers; it does not identify the operator with the DFPI case.

Bottom line for prospective buyers

Treat “TeslaCoin (TES)” as an unverified label, not proof of a Tesla connection or a legitimate investment. Do not send funds until the exact issuer is identifiable, regulatory status is confirmed through an official source, the contract and network are independently verified, the token’s rights are clear and withdrawals are credible. If those checks fail—or the offer relies on urgency, guaranteed gains or extra payments to unlock funds—walk away.
