The $1,000 Pixel referral offer was real, but it was a limited 2022 promotion—not a current payout. It let eligible participants earn $100 in Google Store credit for each successful referral, up to 10 referrals. The campaign’s codes had to be used by June 30, 2023, so old codes are no longer a way to claim the reward.
What the $1,000 Pixel referral offer actually meant
The headline described a maximum, not a guaranteed payment. Under the 2022 promotion, an eligible referrer could receive $100 in Google Store credit for each successful referral. Ten qualifying referrals would total $1,000 in credit. The buyer also received a $100 promotional benefit under the historical offer. 9to5Google’s report on the promotion says eligible purchases included the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

- Maximum for the referrer: $1,000 in Google Store credit after 10 successful referrals—not cash and not an instant $1,000 reduction on one phone.
The promotion was broader than the Pixel 7 alone, but it was still limited by its participating products, account eligibility, purchase channel and campaign dates.
How the historical promotion worked
The promotion was email-based and not necessarily open to every Pixel owner. A contemporary Google Pixel Community discussion described it as an offer sent to select Google Store customers.

- An eligible participant received a referral code by email and shared it with someone else.
- The recipient signed in to a Google Account and bought an eligible phone through the Google Store.
- At checkout, the recipient entered the code as a promotional code. The code was for one eligible phone purchase by the recipient.
- After the purchase met the promotion’s conditions, the parties could receive their promotional benefits. This was a later reward, not an immediate price cut at checkout.
Droid Life’s contemporary coverage also distinguished the offer from an upfront discount: the buyer’s benefit was for a later Google Store purchase.
Why Google Store credit is not the same as cash
A checkout discount lowers the amount due for the phone immediately. Store credit is a separate balance issued under promotion terms; its value depends on whether you later buy something eligible from that store. The historical $1,000 maximum was therefore not a cash reward, a bank deposit, or a discount available to one buyer on one phone.

Google’s Google Store credit guidance says promotional credit generally expires one year after issuance unless the promotion specifies otherwise. Store credit is region-specific and non-transferable, cannot be redeemed for cash, and generally cannot be used for Google Play purchases, subscriptions, or Google Fi plans. Those are general Store-credit rules; the terms attached to a particular promotion control its specific credit.
Why an old referral code will not work now
The historical campaign’s code-use deadline was June 30, 2023, according to 9to5Google’s account of the offer. Treat codes from that campaign as expired, even if an old post or message still displays one. A code may also fail because it was already redeemed, is restricted to a different country or product, or does not match the account or campaign. Returning a qualifying item can also affect earned promotional credit. Google’s Store credit terms say that credit associated with a returned offer item may be deducted. Do not count a delayed promotional reward as spendable money until it has actually been issued and you have checked its terms.
Google’s current Pixel referral offer is different
Google now describes a separate program on its Pixel Referral Program page. The displayed U.S. offer gives the buyer 10% off a Pixel phone and the referrer $50 in Google Store credit for each successful referral, up to 10 referrals or $500 in credit. The page states that referral credit is issued 15 days after the allowable return period and expires 365 days after issuance. Program exclusions may apply during major promotions and introductory offers for newly launched devices.

Google says a referrer must be an active Pixel phone user opted in to receive Pixel emails. A recipient must be signed in to a Google Account and must not have previously used a code from the program. Participation and code availability are controlled by Google, so having a Pixel does not guarantee that you can refer someone.

For a code that Google currently recognizes, its documented checkout flow is to add the eligible product to the Google Store cart, proceed to checkout, sign in to the account associated with the offer, select Add a promo code, enter the code, and select Apply. Check that the discount appears before placing the order; Google says only one promotional code can be applied per order. See Google’s promotional-code checkout instructions. This process does not revive codes from the expired 2022 campaign.

Where to look for Pixel savings instead
If you are shopping now, compare the benefit that actually applies to your purchase rather than relying on an expired referral code. Google’s Google Store offers page lists current promotions, including direct offers, trade-ins and carrier-linked bill credits; terms and availability can change. A carrier offer may depend on an eligible plan, activation, trade-in condition or monthly credits over time, so compare its total commitment with a direct Store discount or referral benefit.
