Spotify announced Premium price increases in selected markets across South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific on August 4, 2025. Its example for Premium Individual rose from €10.99 to €11.99 per month, but that was not a universal price or a promise that every plan in every country would rise by €1. Spotify later announced a separate increase for the U.S., Estonia and Latvia on January 15, 2026. Your account’s notice and local pricing page are the best guides to what you will pay.
What Spotify changed outside the U.S.
Spotify’s August 4, 2025 announcement covered Premium subscriptions in selected markets across six broad regions: South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Spotify said affected subscribers would receive an email over the following month. Some new prices appeared on billing cycles beginning in September 2025, but the announcement date was not necessarily the date an existing customer started paying more. Spotify’s announcement described the adjustments as a way to continue innovating and delivering value to fans and artists.

This was a set of local changes, not one worldwide tariff. Spotify did not publish a complete country-by-country price list in its announcement, and it did not say that all plans or subscribers in each named region would be affected.
How much did the price go up?

The €1 example was reported in connection with selected international markets, but it cannot establish your local price. Country, currency, tax treatment, plan type and earlier price changes all matter. Do not apply the Individual example to Duo, Family, Student or audiobook-related offerings. Spotify’s local Premium page is the place to check current prices for a new subscription; existing subscribers should also review the notice tied to their account. Which countries were affected?
Spotify named regions rather than publishing a definitive list of countries affected by the August 2025 changes. Contemporary reporting and user checks identified Spain, Italy and Portugal as examples, not as an official or exhaustive list. Some countries, including France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, had already seen earlier price changes and did not necessarily receive the same additional increase. That distinction matters: a broad regional announcement does not mean every country in the region changed its prices at the same time.
Your country may differ. Check the price-change email associated with your Spotify account and the Premium page for your billing country. Local prices can also depend on taxes, currency and account or payment details. A euro figure should not be converted into a supposedly universal dollar price; exchange rates and local pricing policies differ.

When will the new price apply to an existing subscription?
The August announcement came before the billing changes. Spotify said affected customers would be notified, and the applicable price would take effect after a market-specific notice or grace period. Spotify’s support guidance does not establish one worldwide transition period: its U.S. page describes a one-month grace period, while a localized German-language support page describes three months. The new amount may therefore first appear on a later billing date, not on August 4 itself. Check Spotify’s price-update guidance and the email sent for your account; the terms in your market govern.
How to check your price and billing date
- Open your Spotify account page and review your current plan, billing provider and next payment date.
- Search your inbox for Spotify’s price-change notice. It should identify the change and the date or billing cycle relevant to your account.
- Compare the notice with the local Premium signup page. If you pay through Apple, Google, a mobile carrier or another partner, check that provider’s billing information and cancellation process too.
- For a Family or Duo subscription, have the plan manager check the account: the manager controls billing, even though a price change can affect everyone on the plan.
Promotional offers and trials may have separate transition terms. Spotify says trial users may keep an original price for a limited period, depending on the offer and market. Its U.S. support page also says qualifying lower-priced gift cards can still be redeemed, but that guidance is specific to the U.S. and Premium Individual; check local terms rather than assuming the same treatment elsewhere.

What can you do if you do not accept the increase?
You can cancel before the next billing date, see whether another paid plan is available to you, or continue with Spotify’s free, ad-supported service. Spotify’s market-specific terms may allow it to end a subscription if you do not accept the new price and move the account to the free service. For a direct Spotify subscription, use the account page; for a subscription billed through an app store or another partner, use the billing provider shown on your account.
- Open your Spotify account page and confirm the plan and next billing date.
- Use the account’s subscription-management option to cancel before that date if you do not want the new price.
- Check the account status or confirmation email to make sure the cancellation was recorded.
Uninstalling the Spotify app does not cancel a subscription. Canceling Premium does not by itself mean you need to delete your account; you can use the free tier if it is available to you.

Why did Spotify raise prices?
Spotify’s stated reason
Spotify said the changes would help it keep innovating and provide value to fans and artists. That is the company’s explanation; it does not establish that the increase is passed directly or entirely to artists as additional royalties.
The business context
The August 2025 changes followed a difficult earnings period in which Spotify missed revenue expectations and its shares fell, according to TechCrunch’s coverage. Analysts and media coverage framed higher subscription prices as part of an effort to increase revenue per subscriber and support margins. In August 2025, Spotify co-president and chief business officer Alex Norström described price adjustments as a business tool to use when appropriate, in comments reported by RTÉ. Those comments do not guarantee a particular future price, profit result or feature for every market.

How to decide whether Premium is still worth it
Compare the recurring, tax-inclusive price for the plan you actually need, rather than a headline Individual price or a temporary promotion. Availability, bundles and plan rules vary by country, so a service that is cheaper in one market may cost more in another.
- Consider staying if Spotify’s recommendations, playlists, collaborative features, established library or included local-plan features are important to you, and the new price still fits your budget.
- Consider switching if another service fits your needs at a lower recurring local price, you already pay for an ecosystem bundle, or you prioritize features such as lossless audio that another provider better suits.
- Compare the details: Individual, Duo, Family and Student eligibility; household-member limits; simultaneous listening; offline downloads; audio quality; music video and podcast access; audiobook allowances; compatible devices; and free-tier restrictions.
- Account for switching costs: Check catalog and device availability in your country, and consider the time needed to transfer playlists and rebuild recommendations. Playlist-transfer tools may not match every track correctly; review migrated playlists before canceling.
Apple Music may suit Apple-device households; YouTube Music can make sense for people who value music videos or already pay for YouTube Premium. Deezer is another direct alternative, while Tidal and Qobuz may interest listeners focused on higher-quality audio. Those are product-fit considerations, not a claim that any service is universally cheaper or better. Check each provider’s current local price, plan terms, catalog and availability before switching. Their official pages are Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, Tidal and Qobuz.
How this fits Spotify’s earlier and later price changes
Spotify had already announced broad Premium price changes in 2023, with additional country updates continuing into 2024. The 2025 international increases should therefore be assessed against the price the subscriber actually had before the change, not an old global benchmark. The U.S. was outside the August 2025 announcement, but not permanently exempt: Spotify announced its separate U.S., Estonia and Latvia update in January 2026.
