The August 2024 list combined very different products: a university specialization, free self-paced lessons, vendor academies, a webinar, learning hubs and marketplace classes. That matters because a two-hour beginner course is not interchangeable with a five-course capstone program or a professional certification.
This updated guide preserves all 13 entries from the original August 8, 2024 article, then separates its historical claims from provider details that can be verified now. Availability, names, prices and curricula can change, so treat “August 2024” as the publication period—not a promise that every course still exists in its old form.

How to judge an SEO course
- Curriculum: Look for search intent, keyword research, on-page work, crawling and indexing, internal links, technical SEO, analytics, reporting and content quality.
- Practice: A capstone, website audit, keyword map or guided exercise is more useful for a portfolio than videos alone.
- Freshness: Search Console, Core Web Vitals, structured data and AI-powered answer engines change. A course should show when it was updated.
- Credential: A completion certificate, platform badge, provider certification and university-branded certificate are different things. None proves that you can diagnose a traffic decline or deliver results.
- Fit: Shopify, Wix and WordPress lessons are actionable on those platforms but less transferable to custom sites. Tool-vendor courses may assume Ahrefs, Semrush, Yoast or SE Ranking.
The 13 courses and resources
1. Coursera: Search Engine Optimization Specialization by UC Davis
Best for: A learner who wants the most structured, career-oriented option in this list.
The current UC Davis specialization page lists five courses, beginner level, flexible scheduling, a shareable certificate and an estimate of about two months at 10 hours per week. Topics include competitive analysis, content optimization, technical SEO, local and international SEO, reporting and a capstone project.
The August 2024 article described roughly three months at 10 hours weekly. The current page says the specialization cannot be taken entirely free. Enrollment, previews, subscriptions, financial aid and certificate access are separate; do not interpret “enroll for free” as a free certificate.
Trade-off: It demands substantially more time than an introductory class, but its sequence and capstone make it easier to demonstrate a complete learning path.
2. Semrush Academy: Global SEO Playbook
Best for: Marketers looking for short, practical education connected to keyword research, competitors and Semrush workflows.

That date is historical. It was an event, not a normal evergreen course, and its replay should not be assumed available. Semrush continues to publish courses and certificates through Semrush Academy.
Trade-off: Vendor examples can be useful, but a tool-led lesson may not teach platform-independent SEO as deeply as a broader curriculum.
3. Shopify Academy SEO course
Best for: Shopify merchants who need ecommerce context for products, collections and store content.
The 2024 article reported a free course lasting about 58 minutes. The linked Academy page was not independently readable when checked, so that duration, the current title and current enrollment status should be treated as historical until confirmed directly.
Trade-off: Shopify-specific instructions can be immediately actionable for a store owner but are narrow preparation for technical SEO across several CMS platforms.
Rank #2
4. Wix SEO Learning Hub
Best for: Absolute beginners and small businesses operating a Wix site.
The original listing described a free Wix SEO Learning Hub and forthcoming courses. A hub is a resource library, not necessarily a sequenced course with a defined assessment or completion certificate. Use it to learn where Wix controls live, then supplement it with platform-independent material.
Trade-off: It is accessible, but resource depth and organization can vary, and the lessons naturally emphasize Wix workflows.

Best for: WordPress.com site owners wanting a short, practical introduction.
The current WordPress course page lists a free, self-guided, beginner course of about 1 hour 30 minutes, with hands-on activities and no registration requirement. It now covers SEO and AI optimization, replacing the shorter “Intro to SEO” framing used in 2024.
Trade-off: It is useful for WordPress.com settings and current search terminology, but it is not a substitute for advanced crawling, server, international or large-site auditing training.
6. HubSpot Academy: AEO Fundamentals
Best for: Content and growth marketers who want traditional SEO connected to AI-powered answer engines.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

HubSpot lists a free certification with seven lessons, 19 videos and approximately 2 hours 20 minutes of content. The syllabus includes search intent, E-E-A-T, keyword research, AI citations, Google Search Console, GA4 and AEO measurement.
This is not the same title as the 2024 SEO Certification Course. AEO is an emerging extension of search visibility, not a replacement for technical SEO, site architecture or content fundamentals.
Rank #3
Access: A free HubSpot Academy account is required. The credential is a provider-issued certification, not professional accreditation.
7. Udemy: SEO Training Masterclass
Best for: Learners who prefer a large, on-demand video library.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The current course page is titled SEO Training Masterclass 2026: Beginner To Advanced SEO. The August 2024 article referred to an 18.5-hour “2024” edition with 276 lectures and a $109.99 price. Those title and price details are obsolete.
Udemy pricing is promotion- and location-sensitive; use the live checkout price rather than publishing the old figure. Lifetime access, where offered, is subject to Udemy’s current terms.
Trade-off: Volume can feel comprehensive, but hours of video do not guarantee current examples, instructor feedback or a portfolio project.
8. Moz Academy: SEO Essentials Certification
Best for: Intermediate learners seeking a more formal paid assessment.

One-click scans. No signup required.
The 2024 article described six parts, about eight hours, an examination and a $595 price. The linked Moz Academy page was not available for independent verification when checked, so those are historical figures only. Confirm the current title, exam, certificate and price before paying.
Trade-off: A paid, structured credential may suit professional development, but its cost is high compared with free fundamentals and a certificate still cannot substitute for real audits and results.
9. LinkedIn Learning: SEO Foundations
Best for: Professionals who already have LinkedIn Learning access and want a short introduction.
The August 2024 listing described about 1.5 hours and a certificate of completion. Access may come through a subscription or time-limited trial; verify what “free” means on your account. A LinkedIn completion certificate is not an industry certification.

10. Ahrefs Academy: SEO Course for Beginners
Best for: An absolute beginner who wants a concise, genuinely free starting point.
Ahrefs’ current page lists 14 lessons in five modules, about two hours of content and no sign-up requirement. It covers SEO fundamentals, keyword research, on-page SEO, link building and technical SEO basics.
Trade-off: It is an excellent foundation, but examples naturally reflect Ahrefs’ perspective and it does not create hands-on evidence unless you apply the lessons to a real site.
11. Yoast: SEO for Beginners
Best for: Beginners, particularly WordPress users, who want a free course plus a badge.
The current Yoast page describes about two hours of video in 20 short clips, with a certificate and badge. A free MyYoast account is needed to save progress and receive the certificate; payment details are not required.
The page also advertises Yoast SEO Premium at $118.80 per year excluding VAT. That is a software-and-training offer, not a fee for the free beginner course.
Trade-off: The fundamentals apply beyond WordPress, but the provider’s plugin ecosystem influences examples and later product offers.

12. SE Ranking Academy: SEO Basics Course
Best for: Beginners and small businesses learning alongside an SEO software platform.
The original article reported a course of roughly six hours with a certificate. The Academy page did not provide readable current details when checked, so duration, certificate status and availability need direct confirmation.
Trade-off: Vendor-led lessons may make the tool easier to use, while giving less neutral coverage of workflows outside that platform.
13. Skillshare: Introduction to SEO
Best for: Entrepreneurs and creators who want a short, project-oriented class.
The class page remains accessible and displays “Get Started for Free.” The 2024 article described a 90-minute class with a hands-on project. Current duration, pricing and membership terms were not sufficiently visible to verify, and Skillshare access commonly depends on a membership or trial.
Trade-off: The practical project is more useful than video-only learning, but marketplace classes are less formal than a specialization or certification.

How to turn a course into useful SEO skill
- Choose a real site you own or have permission to analyze.
- Create a keyword map that connects search intent to existing or planned pages.
- Inspect indexing, sitemap, robots.txt, internal links, page speed and structured data.
- Use Search Console and analytics to record impressions, clicks, conversions and technical warnings.
- Complete one before-and-after content or technical improvement and document the reasoning.
- Package the audit, recommendations and measured outcome as a portfolio case study.
This work demonstrates abilities that a certificate alone cannot: prioritization, diagnosis, measurement and communication.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I learn SEO without paying?
Yes. Ahrefs, Yoast, WordPress.com and HubSpot offer free learning options, although accounts, platform limits or certificate conditions may apply. You still need access to a website and analytics data to gain practical experience.

Yes. AI answer engines add visibility and citation considerations, but crawling, indexing, useful content, site architecture, links and measurement remain fundamental. Courses such as HubSpot AEO Fundamentals add AI-search context rather than eliminating core SEO.
Will an SEO certificate get me a job?
It can show initiative and course completion, but employers usually need evidence of audits, keyword research, content decisions, technical fixes, reporting and business impact.
