The Best Budget Laptops of 2022: Picks by Price and Use

The best budget laptop in 2022 depended on your software, screen, and spending limit. Compare historical picks, the configurations worth seeking, and the compromises to watch for.

There was no single best budget laptop in 2022: the right choice depended on whether you needed Windows software, a Chromebook for web-based work, a convertible, or a machine for gaming. This guide treats budget as four historical U.S. price bands—under $300, $300–$500, $500–$700, and $700–$1,000—because 2022 buying guides used the term inconsistently. Products, configurations, and sale prices changed frequently that year, so a model name alone was not enough to identify a good deal.

This is a historical guide to 2022 value, not a claim about current availability or pricing. By 2026, a 2022 model may be discontinued or sold used or refurbished; check the exact unit’s battery condition, return terms, warranty, and operating-system support before buying.

Best budget laptops in 2022 at a glance

Laptop Best for 2022 price context Recommended configuration or qualification Main drawback
Acer Swift 3 Portable Windows productivity and overall value Usually a broader budget pick approaching $1,000, rather than a strict under-$500 laptop Choose a Ryzen 4000-series configuration; verify the exact CPU, memory, storage, and screen Its price could exceed a narrow budget
Acer Aspire 5 Low-cost, full-size Windows laptop Under $500 was common for some configurations; a February 11, 2022 listing put one at $420 Prefer a 1080p display, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD or better Battery life and entry-level performance could disappoint
Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15 Windows schoolwork, documents, and browsing Configuration and sale dependent Ryzen 5 or better, at least 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and 1080p IPS display Some versions had a TN screen; no USB-C charging was reported
Lenovo Chromebook Duet or Duet 3 Low-cost browsing, streaming, and tablet use The original Duet was positioned below $300; TechJunkie listed the Duet 3 at $299 on February 11, 2022 Check storage and RAM; try the detachable keyboard if long typing sessions matter Cramped keyboard, limited storage, and ChromeOS app limits
Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook A larger Chromebook for typing and everyday multitasking TechJunkie listed the IdeaPad Chromebook Flex 5 at $404 on February 11, 2022 Coverage described a 13-inch Full HD touchscreen and 10th-generation Intel Core i3 Less tablet-portable than the Duet
HP Envy x360 13 Windows convertible with a more polished build TechJunkie listed an HP Envy x360 2-in-1 at $729 on February 11, 2022 Check display and memory configuration before purchase Some versions had non-upgradeable memory; upgrades could raise the price
Dell G15 Budget gaming with dedicated graphics Category pick in Byteside’s guide last updated March 2022; pricing varied Check the specific GPU, RAM, SSD, and screen refresh rate Heavy, bulky, and a poor choice for unplugged gaming or frequent travel

The category labels reflect different needs, not a single head-to-head test. For example, Byteside’s March 2022 guide called the Acer Swift 3 its overall budget pick while also recommending a Dell G15 for gaming; BGR defined “cheap” generally as below $600. Byteside’s 2022 recommendations and BGR’s under-$600 guide show why price bands are more useful than one universal ranking.

How “budget” was defined in 2022

  • Under $300: Entry Chromebooks, detachable tablets, and basic Windows machines. A Chromebook or detachable could deliver a more usable web experience than a similarly priced Windows laptop, but storage and keyboard compromises were common.
  • $300–$500: The main market for student and everyday laptops. This is where a properly configured Chromebook or an entry Windows clamshell could make sense.
  • $500–$700: A better Windows configuration, larger Chromebook convertible, or entry gaming laptop might fit, depending on sales.
  • $700–$1,000: Premium-budget convertibles, ultraportables, and gaming models. These could be called budget options by broader guides but were not inexpensive in the under-$500 sense.

Historical prices are snapshots, not promises of a standard street price. TechJunkie’s February 11, 2022 list included the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3 at $299, Acer Aspire 5 at $420, Gateway GWTN141 at $499.99, Lenovo IdeaPad Chromebook Flex 5 at $404, HP Envy x360 2-in-1 at $729, and MSI Katana GF66 at $918.28. Those are listed prices reported at that time, not current prices or guaranteed prices for every configuration. TechJunkie’s historical list

Best overall value: Acer Swift 3

The Acer Swift 3 was a strong choice for someone willing to spend beyond the strict entry-level tier for a portable Windows laptop. Byteside’s March 2022 guide selected it as its best overall budget laptop, pointing to the performance of AMD Ryzen 4000-series processors, battery life, and value against more expensive competitors. The important qualification is price: “budget” here could mean approaching $1,000, not a laptop under $500. Byteside’s selection and rationale

It suited a student or remote worker who wanted a conventional Windows computer for productivity and travel, and who valued portability over a large screen or gaming graphics. Because Swift 3 specifications varied, check the exact processor generation, RAM, SSD capacity, display, and price rather than relying on the family name.

Best Windows laptop under $500: Acer Aspire 5

The Aspire 5 offered a practical full-size format: selected configurations had a 15.6-inch 1080p screen, a full-size keyboard, a broad port selection, and upgradeability on certain models. It was an attractive fit for documents, browsing, video, and schoolwork when the listing had a sensible screen and enough memory and storage.

Its battery life was a meaningful trade-off. A Tom’s Guide test cited in 2022 coverage found a tested Aspire 5 configuration lasted under seven hours in the lab; the same coverage said it could run low after only a few hours of video streaming in real-world use. Those findings apply to the tested configuration and conditions, not every Aspire 5. Buyers who needed a dependable full day away from an outlet should weigh that weakness carefully. 2022 Aspire 5 coverage and test context

The family ranged from basic Core i3 versions with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage to more capable variants. Coverage also described a Core i5 configuration with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, while a separate BGR listing discussed lower-spec options. These are configuration examples, not a single fixed Aspire 5 specification. Prefer 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD or better; avoid paying close to a better-equipped model’s price for a slow processor, 4GB RAM, or a small drive. BGR’s Aspire 5 configuration coverage

Best Windows productivity alternative: Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15

The IdeaPad 3 15 made sense for everyday Windows work when configured with a Ryzen 5 or better processor, at least 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD or larger, and a 1920×1080 IPS display. Coverage described options up to Ryzen 7, 16GB memory, and 1TB storage, but the product family also included IPS and TN screen variants. The IPS option was preferable for brightness and color; do not assume every 1080p version used the same panel. IdeaPad 3 configuration and display details

Reported drawbacks included a relatively firm keyboard and lack of USB-C charging. If you type for hours, use the keyboard in person if possible; if you depend on one-cable USB-C charging, check the exact model’s charging support rather than assuming a USB-C port can charge it.

Best compact Chromebook: Lenovo Chromebook Duet and Duet 3

The Duet’s appeal was its low price, portability, detachable keyboard, and tablet flexibility. It suited web browsing, streaming, Google Workspace, and schoolwork that could be done in ChromeOS. The Duet 3 expanded the display to 11 inches; cited configurations used a 2,000×1,200 screen, Snapdragon 7c Gen 2, 4–8GB RAM, and 64–128GB eMMC storage. The reported weight was about 1.2 pounds as a tablet and 2.1 pounds with its keyboard cover. These specifications describe cited Duet 3 configurations, not every Duet model. The HP True Vision 720p HD camera with integrated dual array digital microphones delivers crystal-clear video calls and online meetings. HD Audio with stereo speakers provides rich, immersive sound for music, videos, and calls. With 64GB eMMC storage, you have ample space for essential files while Chrome OS seamlessly integrates with Google Drive for cloud storage.

The detachable keyboard was cramped compared with a 13- or 15-inch laptop, and limited memory or storage could constrain multitasking and local files. Android-app support on ChromeOS does not make the Duet a Windows laptop: it cannot natively run conventional Windows desktop programs such as full desktop Adobe Photoshop. Before choosing one, confirm that required school or work applications, peripherals, and file workflows work in ChromeOS.

Best larger Chromebook: Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook

If you wanted ChromeOS but found the Duet too small for regular typing, the Flex 5 Chromebook offered a more conventional laptop shape and a larger screen. Coverage described a 13-inch Full HD touchscreen, comfortable keyboard, and 10th-generation Intel Core i3 processor. That combination made it a more comfortable fit for writing and everyday multitasking than a small detachable, though it gave up some of the Duet’s compact tablet convenience. Flex 5 Chromebook context

Best Windows convertible: HP Envy x360 13

The Envy x360 13 was a better fit than a basic entry-level Windows machine for buyers who wanted a touchscreen that folded into tablet mode, a more polished build, and stronger everyday performance. It was not necessarily a sub-$500 purchase: TechJunkie listed an HP Envy x360 2-in-1 at $729 on February 11, 2022, and desirable upgrades could raise the cost further. That listing does not establish the price of every Envy x360 13 configuration.

Check the panel and memory before buying. Display quality varied, and memory was not upgradeable on some versions, so choosing sufficient RAM at purchase mattered. BGR’s laptop coverage and Byteside’s category picks

Best budget gaming choices: Dell G15 and MSI Katana GF66

The Dell G15 and MSI Katana GF66 were budget gaming candidates for buyers who valued dedicated graphics more than portability. Byteside named the Dell G15 its budget gaming pick; TechJunkie listed the MSI Katana GF66 at $918.28 on February 11, 2022. That MSI figure is a historical listing price, not a current price or a verified price for every GPU configuration. Dell G15 category pick and MSI Katana GF66 historical listing

Gaming models typically traded weight, thickness, fan noise, heat, and battery life for graphics performance. Compare the exact GPU, RAM, SSD, and display refresh rate; the model name alone does not tell you how well a particular unit will game. Set expectations around the game and settings you intend to use rather than assuming every configuration handles demanding new releases equally well.

Other options worth considering

Acer Chromebook Spin 713

The Spin 713 was a more premium Chromebook choice, with coverage highlighting a sharp QHD display, comfortable keyboard, useful ports, and strong battery life. Its 4GB configurations could stutter during heavier multitasking, and ChromeOS still would not suit someone dependent on x86 Windows applications. Spin 713 coverage

HP Chromebook 14 FHD

Cited versions began with a Celeron processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, and a 14-inch 1920×1080 display; the source reported battery life of up to 11 hours as a claim, not a guaranteed result. Confirm that a listing is the FHD version: lower-resolution variants existed. Its small storage and entry-level components make it a better match for light browser-centered work than heavy multitasking or large local files. 2021 iPad with a keyboard

Byteside included the 2021 iPad as an Apple-adjacent budget option, citing its low entry price and long software support relative to cheap laptops. It is a tablet, not a conventional laptop: desktop software compatibility and extensive multitasking may make it a poor substitute for a Windows or macOS computer. Byteside’s 2022 selection

Choose the right operating system and form factor

  • Choose Windows if you need desktop Office workflows, legacy programs, specialized business or school software, local file management, or peripherals with Windows-only drivers. Windows also offered more options for ports, screen sizes, upgrades, and dedicated graphics.
  • Choose ChromeOS for browser-centered work, Google Workspace, streaming, and simple maintenance at the lowest prices, provided all required apps and peripherals are compatible. Low-end 4GB models could struggle with many simultaneous browser tabs, and a small eMMC drive limits local storage.
  • Choose a 14- or 15-inch clamshell if a comfortable keyboard and larger screen matter more than carrying weight.
  • Choose a detachable or convertible if tablet use is important. A detachable is compact but can be tiring for extended typing; a 2-in-1 may cost more or weigh more than a comparable clamshell.
  • Choose a dedicated-GPU gaming laptop only if gaming or GPU-heavy work justifies the added bulk, heat, fan noise, and weak unplugged gaming endurance.

Specifications to prioritize before paying

  • RAM: For general Windows use, prefer 8GB; 4GB is an entry-level compromise, especially with multiple browser tabs or apps open. More memory can matter more than a small CPU step-up for browser-heavy work.
  • Storage: Prefer a 256GB SSD or larger for a Windows laptop. Avoid 64GB Windows storage; treat 64GB eMMC on a Chromebook as suitable only if your local-file and app needs are light. SSDs are more responsive than older hard drives, while low-capacity eMMC is common on inexpensive Chromebooks.
  • Display: Prefer 1920×1080 and IPS where available. A 1080p TN panel is not equivalent to an IPS panel, and 1366×768 is a substantial compromise when a better panel is available. The screen is difficult or impossible to upgrade later.
  • Processor: For Windows, recent Core i3/Core i5 or Ryzen 3/Ryzen 5 options were generally preferable to older Celeron, Pentium, or low-end Athlon configurations. Check the generation and exact chip, not just the brand.
  • Ports and charging: Check for the USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, headphone, SD-card, Ethernet, or charging support your setup needs. A USB-C-shaped port does not by itself establish USB-C charging.
  • Keyboard and battery: Try the keyboard if possible, particularly on detachables. Treat manufacturer battery claims as estimates; results vary with screen brightness, workload, processor, battery capacity, and test procedure. Give more weight to a test that identifies its exact configuration and method.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the family name instead of the configuration: Aspire 5, IdeaPad 3, and Chromebook 14 labels covered different processors, RAM, storage, and displays. Confirm the full model number and specification list.
  • Choosing the cheapest Windows configuration by default: 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, a slow chip, or a dim 1366×768 panel can make a low price a poor value. Windows in S mode may also affect how you install apps.
  • Assuming Chromebook means Windows compatibility: Android apps do not provide native support for all Windows desktop programs, specialist tools, or device drivers.
  • Ignoring display type: When two listings share a resolution, check whether the panel is IPS or TN. Screen quality is a daily-use difference you cannot usually fix with an upgrade.
  • Trusting a model-level battery claim: Battery life changes with configuration and use. Aspire 5 testing cited above is a reminder to look for a tested result tied to a specific configuration.
  • Buying a gaming laptop for portability: Dedicated graphics do not make a gaming laptop a good travel or all-day battery choice.
  • Overlooking used-unit risk in 2026: A 2022 laptop found used or refurbished may have an unknown battery, variable warranty and return terms, and a shorter remaining software-support horizon. Check the exact serial number and support status with the manufacturer; cosmetic grade does not establish battery health.

What to check when buying a 2022 model in 2026

Most recommendations here describe value and product choices as they stood in 2022, not current stock or a current buying endorsement. If you find one in 2026, compare its asking price with newer alternatives and verify the exact unit, not just the product family.

  1. Ask for the complete model or part number and verify its CPU, RAM, storage, screen resolution and panel type, operating system, and included accessories.
  2. Check battery health or ask whether the battery has been tested or replaced; do not infer it from cosmetic condition.
  3. Read the seller’s return policy, warranty coverage, and refurbisher terms before payment.
  4. Check the manufacturer’s support information using the unit’s serial number, including whether the operating system remains supported.
  5. Compare the final price with a current laptop in the same category. A historical recommendation is not automatically a good used purchase.

For a contemporary comparison, use manufacturer pages as listings of current product families, not evidence that a newer model is identical to its 2022 namesake. Acer’s U.S. laptop store and Windows laptop listings, Lenovo’s IdeaPad category, student Chromebook listings, ChromeOS 2-in-1 listings, and student Chromebook and Chromebook Plus listings show current product directions. Prices and specifications can change; none of those pages establishes the 2022 specifications or price of a historical model.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
