Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires List estimated Elon Musk’s net worth at $726.3 billion at the close of trading on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. That figure is an estimated value of his business interests—not $726.3 billion in cash—and it can change whenever public share prices or private-company valuations move.
How much was Elon Musk worth at the end of 2025?
Forbes Austria reported the $726.3 billion year-end estimate using the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List. The observation was taken at the December 31, 2025 market close, so it is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent valuation or an audited balance sheet.
Forbes’ estimate fell $3.3 billion on December 31 as Tesla shares declined 1% to $449.72. Tesla nevertheless ended 2025 up 18%, illustrating why Musk’s reported wealth can rise over a year yet drop on a single trading day.
Did Elon Musk really have $726 billion?
He was estimated to be worth that amount under Forbes’ methodology, but “worth” does not mean money sitting in a bank account. The calculation assigns values to shares, options and ownership interests in companies. Turning those holdings into cash would require sales that could affect prices, create taxes and face contractual or market limitations.

The amount should therefore be read as “Forbes estimated the market value of Musk’s assets at $726.3 billion on that date.” It is not an annual salary, income figure or immediately spendable balance.
What assets make up the estimate?
Tesla
Tesla is publicly traded, making its contribution responsive to the latest share price. The number of shares and options Forbes counts, along with its treatment of those interests, also affects the result.
Rank #2
SpaceX
SpaceX is private, so there is no continuously quoted public share price. Forbes uses available financing and tender-offer information as reference points. A new transaction can therefore change the implied value of Musk’s stake even when no public-market quote exists.
Other private-company interests
Forbes identifies additional interests in xAI, The Boring Company and Neuralink. Their contribution depends on the valuation evidence and ownership assumptions available at the time.

Why did estimates vary during December?
Different wealth trackers can report very different numbers without either being an arithmetic error. The key differences are timing, market inputs and ownership treatment.
| Reported figure | Source and observation | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|
| $726.3 billion | Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List, December 31, 2025 market close | Uses the later year-end timestamp, Tesla’s closing price and Forbes’ private-company assumptions. |
| Almost $638 billion | Bloomberg report, December 15, 2025 | Earlier observation from a different tracker and before later market and valuation changes. |
| About $800 billion valuation for SpaceX | Bloomberg report on a December tender offer | This is a company valuation reference, not Musk’s personal net worth. |
Trackers may also differ over whether they include options or restricted stock, how they discount those interests, how much of a company Musk owns, and whether figures are rounded. A market-close figure cannot be compared directly with an intraday snapshot without aligning those inputs.

What made Musk’s net worth jump so much in 2025?
The main drivers were higher valuations for companies linked to Musk and Tesla’s share performance. The reported SpaceX tender offer placed the private rocket company at about $800 billion, while Tesla finished the year 18% higher despite its December 31 decline. Because Musk’s fortune is concentrated in these holdings, changes in their implied values have an outsized effect on the headline number.
That does not mean Musk received hundreds of billions in new cash during the year. It means the estimated market value of his ownership stakes increased under the assumptions used by the tracker.

How to interpret the $726.3 billion headline
- Date: It applies specifically to the December 31, 2025 market close.
- Source: It is Forbes’ estimate, not an independently audited statement.
- Composition: Tesla, SpaceX and other company interests supply most of the value.
- Volatility: Tesla’s daily price changes can move the estimate immediately.
- Private valuations: SpaceX and other private holdings rely on transaction or financing evidence that may change when new deals occur.
- Liquidity: Net worth is an asset-value estimate, not spendable cash.
Bottom line
Elon Musk ended 2025 with a Forbes-estimated net worth of $726.3 billion at the December 31 market close. The figure reflects the estimated value of his Tesla, SpaceX and other holdings, and it can diverge from Bloomberg or another tracker because those services may use different dates, prices, ownership assumptions and private-company valuations.
