Start with Airbnb’s pet filter, then verify the listing’s House rules and get the host’s written answer about your specific animal before booking. “Pets allowed” is only a starting point: a host may limit species, size, number, furniture access, unattended time, leash use, outdoor areas or waste disposal. Check the complete checkout total, including any disclosed pet fee.
How to find a pet-friendly Airbnb
- Enter your destination, dates and guest count on Airbnb, then apply the pet filter.
- Open each promising listing and read its House rules. Do not rely solely on the search-result label.
- Message the host with your animal’s type, size, number and relevant behavior or care needs.
- Ask the questions below and keep the answers in Airbnb’s messaging channel.
- Review the checkout page and confirm the full reservation total before committing.
What “pets allowed” may still restrict
Airbnb’s Animal Safety guidance says guests are required to follow the host’s rules around pets and encourages guests to contact the host even when a listing allows pets. A listing can therefore accept some animals while imposing additional conditions.
Questions to ask the host
- Is my specific animal accepted, and are there limits on species, size, breed, number or age?
- May the animal go on beds, sofas or other furniture?
- Can the animal be left alone in the home? If so, for how long, and must it be crated?
- Are there shared spaces, resident pets, neighbors or other animals that affect the stay?
- What outdoor areas are available, and are leash rules or gates involved?
- Where should pet waste be disposed of, and are there cleaning instructions?
- Are there allergies, phobias or sensitivities to resident animals that the host has disclosed?
Compare listings on cost and rules
Use the same dates and party details for every candidate. A lower nightly rate can be offset by a pet charge or stricter rules that do not fit your trip.

How pet fees affect your budget
Airbnb’s host guidance describes several possible fee structures: a flat amount per booking, per night, per pet, or per pet per night. The amount depends on the listing and your dates, so the only reliable figure is the one shown in the reservation’s price breakdown.

- Look for a pet-related line item or other disclosed fee in the checkout breakdown.
- If the amount is unclear, ask the host to confirm it in Airbnb messages before booking.
- Do not assume a fee mentioned in a message is included unless the reservation total reflects it through Airbnb.
Service animals are not ordinary pets
Airbnb’s Accessibility Policy treats service animals separately from pets. Under that platform policy, a service animal generally may accompany a guest even when a home has a no-pets rule, and hosts generally may not charge a pet or animal-hair cleaning fee for it, subject to the policy’s exceptions.
Emotional support animals have different treatment under Airbnb’s policy, and local law can change what a host must accommodate. Consult Airbnb’s current Accessibility Policy and describe your situation accurately; do not present the platform policy as a universal rule for every jurisdiction.

Prepare for arrival
Pack what you need to comply with the confirmed rules and care for your animal. Airbnb’s pet guidance specifically raises leash and waste-disposal logistics, so a leash and pet-waste bags may be necessary where the property requires them. Bring any crate, bedding, food, medication or cleaning supplies your animal needs, since a pet-friendly listing does not guarantee that these are provided.

- The total price remains unclear after you ask.
- Important conditions are stated inconsistently between the listing and the host’s messages.
Choose another listing rather than relying on an assumption that could create extra charges, a denied check-in or conflict during the stay.
