Bon Appétit’s 2026 review names five recommendations—not nine. Emily Farris says she and her sons have used more than 30 children’s bottles over nearly a decade and professionally tested nearly as many insulated and lightweight plastic models. The best overall pick in that review is the Hydro Flask Kids Wide Mouth 12 oz; the right choice still depends on a child’s age, drinking style, carrying strength and how much cleaning you will tolerate.
The five bottles the review actually recommends
| Best for | Model | What the review reports | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall | Hydro Flask Kids Wide Mouth 12 oz | Vacuum-insulated stainless steel; 9.5 oz empty; flip-down hard-plastic straw spout; removable silicone boot; survived daily dishwasher use in the reviewer’s family. | Straws eventually leaked and one child chewed the spout; the boot can make backpack-sleeve storage tighter. |
| Budget insulated | ThermoFlask Kids 16 oz with straw lid | Considered more durable than a comparable Takeya in the reviewer’s experience; a two-pack was available at roughly the price of one Takeya when reviewed. | Less insulation than pricier choices and fewer customization or kid-focused designs. Availability and pricing change. |
| Insulated toddler | Thermos Funtainer 12 oz | Soft silicone straw, push-button lid, grippy hinged handle and compact fit; manufacturer-stated cold retention is up to 12 hours, and the review says it is leakproof when properly closed. | The straw needs a dedicated brush and replacement when buildup cannot be removed. |
| Plastic toddler | Nalgene Kids Sustain Grip-N-Gulp 12 oz | Lightweight, budget-friendly and dishwasher-safe, with a sippy cap and valve that was nearly leak-free in testing. | It is not insulated; the valve takes more effort to drink through and can release a few drops under deliberate testing. |
| Plastic for bigger kids | Yeti Yonder 20 oz with Straw Cap | Lightweight plastic bottle; a customized example endured about three years of rotation and dishwasher use in the reviewer’s family. | The cap and small parts require thorough cleaning; the chug cap may be simpler to wash. |
These are source-specific observations from Emily Farris’s Bon Appétit review, not standardized laboratory scores or guarantees for every child.
How to choose by age and drinking style
Toddlers
Small hands generally do better with a short bottle, a grippy handle and a soft straw or sippy valve. The Thermos Funtainer is the insulated option; the Nalgene Grip-N-Gulp is lighter and simpler but does not keep water cold.
Preschool and elementary-school children
A child who can operate a flip-down straw can use the Hydro Flask. Its 12-ounce capacity limits weight, while the silicone boot reduces noise and sliding. Check that the boot still fits the backpack’s bottle sleeve.

Older children carrying more water
The 20-ounce Yeti Yonder suits a bigger child who wants lightweight plastic. Its larger capacity adds carrying weight when full, and its multi-part straw cap demands careful cleaning.
Children who prefer an open drinking opening
Owala’s official Kids FreeSip listing describes a 16-ounce insulated stainless-steel bottle for ages 3 and up, with a built-in straw and larger opening, a leak-proof lid, a dishwasher-safe lid and a hand-wash-only steel body. Those material and performance statements are the manufacturer’s claims; the hand-wash requirement is also noted in the review.

- Patented FreeSip spout designed for either sipping upright through the built-in straw or tilting back to swig from the spout opening
- Protective push-to-open lid keeps spout clean; convenient carry loop doubles as a lock

Cleaning and leak prevention matter more than the label
- Close the lid completely. “Leakproof” is conditional for several designs. A bottle can spill when left open even if it seals when closed.
- Brush straws and valves. The Thermos Funtainer straw needs a straw brush; replace it if residue remains.
- Check every dishwasher instruction. A dishwasher-safe lid does not make the whole bottle dishwasher-safe. Owala’s body, for example, must be hand-washed.
- Account for trapped water. Simple Modern Summit Kids was reported to drip residual water from its straw or spout while closed, a source-specific observation rather than a universal defect.
- Prefer replaceable wear parts. The Hydro Flask’s replacement lids and straws were described as easy and affordable to obtain, which can extend the bottle’s useful life.
What the review says about other tested bottles
Promising but not established winners
A 10-year-old liked the 14-ounce Hydrojug Ease2o during a few weeks of use. The reviewer noted a small dent after a drop, covered dual spouts and sticking buttons, and said long-term durability was still uncertain.
Heavier or more expensive alternatives
The Yeti Rambler Jr was described as durable, easy to clean, cold-retaining and more or less leak-free, but heavier and pricier than the Hydro Flask comparator.
Rank #3

Models with reported drawbacks
- Brümate Leap leaked in the reviewer’s attempts despite its locked position.
- The 16-ounce Thermos Funtainer open-spout version can spill if left open.
- Owala Kids FreeSip offers a convenient combined straw and open spout, but its steel body requires hand washing.
- Bubba Flo Refresh was difficult to disassemble and reassemble.
- Ello Emma’s steel bottle is not dishwasher-safe.
- Takeya Kids developed coating scratches and lost a handle in the reviewer’s use.
- Zak plastic was awkward to drink from at low water levels, with some customer reports of leaks or shattered parts.
- Bentgo Kids’ soft handle detached in the reviewer’s child’s use, and the closed bottle released drops.
- Ello Pop & Fill’s quick-fill/chug opening seemed too large for small children.
Safety and recalls: verify the exact model
The review says some Contigo soft-spout models had been voluntarily recalled because of choking hazards. That is not a recall finding for every Contigo bottle. Check the exact model and current notice through the manufacturer or the relevant government recall database before relying on any safety conclusion. The reviewer also described two defective CamelBak Eddy+ units ordered years earlier; CamelBak’s current Eddy+ Kids 14-ounce page lists flip-bite-sip operation, leak-proof-when-closed and spill-proof-when-open behavior, dishwasher-safe cap and bottle, and BPA/BPS/BPF-free materials. The page showed the product as sold out when viewed, so confirm current stock and model details.

A practical buying checklist
- Match the mouthpiece: choose sippy, bite valve, straw or chug opening according to what the child already uses successfully.
- Set a capacity ceiling: a larger bottle carries more water but adds weight; the reviewer preferred the 9.5-ounce empty Hydro Flask over the 16-ounce Yeti Rambler Jr comparator for a child carrying it.
- Map the cleaning routine: count removable lids, valves, straws and seals, then confirm which pieces can go in the dishwasher.
- Test the closure at home: fill, close and invert it over a sink before putting it in a backpack.
- Check replacement parts: verify that the exact lid, straw or valve is still sold for the model you buy.
- Recheck live details: prices, packs, stock, product versions and recalls can change after a review is published.
