There is no single best online human-resources degree for every student. Current 2026 guides disagree on their top schools because they use different eligibility rules and scoring methods. Use their lists as a shortlist, then compare accredited status, total net cost, curriculum, delivery format, transfer credit, experiential requirements and availability in your state.

The title requested 2022 picks, but the available evidence is current 2026 reporting. The recommendations below are therefore labeled as current, not historical 2022 rankings.

Current ranking leaders are different

BestColleges’ guide, updated May 1, 2026, ranks Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota first, the University of Alabama at Birmingham second and Maryville University third. Its school information was verified in August 2025. Saint Mary’s may be completable in as little as one year for a student bringing substantial prior credit; that is a conditional pathway, not a normal completion time.

OnlineU’s 2026 ranking produces a different top three. It includes institutionally accredited schools offering a fully online HR bachelor’s degree, at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate review rating of at least 2.5 out of 5.

Publisher and year Rank 1 Rank 2 Rank 3 What the list measures
BestColleges, 2026 Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota University of Alabama at Birmingham Maryville University Factors described include cost, flexibility, credentials, real-world experience and employer connections.
OnlineU, 2026 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Pennsylvania State University Purdue University Institutional accreditation, fully online availability and verified student feedback under its eligibility rules.

OnlineU reports that all 15 programs on its list scored at least 3.86 out of 5 and had at least 80% reviewer recommendation. Its top five exceeded 4.1 out of 5 with 100% recommendation rates. Those are verified-review results reported by OnlineU, not guarantees of learning, employment or salary outcomes.

OnlineU tuition figures: useful for screening, not budgeting

OnlineU displays these annual tuition figures for three of its 2026 entries:

School Displayed annual tuition How to interpret it
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville $9,855 OnlineU’s displayed figure; confirm the current institutional rate and your residency or course-load treatment.
Pennsylvania State University $41,790 OnlineU’s displayed figure; it is not a personalized net price.
Purdue University $28,794 OnlineU’s displayed figure; confirm what fees, credits and enrollment assumptions are included.

These numbers are not financial-aid offers. Ask each school for a written estimate covering tuition, mandatory fees, books, technology charges and any transfer-credit evaluation. Subtract grants and scholarships, and model the number of credits you actually need. A historical NCES average cited by BestColleges was $10,473 in 2019–2020 tuition and fees for online business bachelor’s degrees, including HR programs; it is not a current market average.

What you should study in an HR bachelor’s program

Most programs combine a business core with specialized HR courses. A representative curriculum can include:

  • Business foundations: accounting, marketing, management and business law.
  • People operations: recruiting and screening, employee relations, compensation and benefits, and training and development.
  • Risk and compliance: employment law, ethical decision-making and policy administration.
  • Data and strategy: HR metrics, workforce analysis, talent acquisition and retention, organizational development and change management.

Match the emphasis to your target role. Recruiting and coordinator jobs may reward broad HR and communication preparation, while compensation, people analytics or labor-relations work may require stronger quantitative or legal coursework. Review the actual course list rather than relying on the degree title.

Accreditation and SHRM alignment are separate checks

Institutional accreditation

Confirm that the university holds current recognition from an appropriate institutional accreditor. This affects transferability, eligibility for many forms of federal aid and how other schools or employers evaluate the degree.

Business-school accreditation

HR-specific programmatic accreditation is not established as a separate standard in the reviewed guidance. Business schools may instead hold accreditation from bodies such as AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE. Check whether the business-school credential covers your program and whether it is current.

SHRM curriculum alignment

Purdue Global’s 2025–2026 catalog states that SHRM acknowledged its BS in Human Resource Management as fully aligned with the SHRM HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. That statement concerns one program’s curriculum. Alignment does not award SHRM professional certification and does not replace checking the program’s courses, accreditation and outcomes.

Online delivery can mean very different schedules

Asynchronous courses

You complete readings, assignments and discussions on a flexible schedule within weekly deadlines. This is often the best fit for shift workers or caregivers, but it still requires consistent independent study.

Synchronous courses

Live online meetings occur at scheduled times. Ask which time zone applies, whether attendance is mandatory and whether recordings are available.

Hybrid and experiential requirements

Some degrees combine online classes with campus sessions, internships or other field experiences. Before applying, ask about required visits, placement responsibility, travel, background checks, work-hour expectations and whether an approved local employer can satisfy the requirement.

A practical shortlist process

  1. Define the role and degree level. Decide whether you need a bachelor’s for entry, a specialization for advancement or a graduate credential for management-oriented goals.
  2. Verify eligibility. Confirm state authorization, admission prerequisites, transfer-credit rules and whether residents of your state can enroll.
  3. Request a net-cost estimate. Include aid, fees, books, technology costs and the credits remaining after transfer evaluation.
  4. Audit the curriculum. Look for employment law, analytics, talent management, employee relations and organizational-development content relevant to your plan.
  5. Confirm the calendar and workload. Get the term length, weekly time expectation, live-session schedule and maximum course load in writing.
  6. Check applied learning and support. Ask about internships, projects, career services, employer connections, advising and networking with alumni.
  7. Compare completion scenarios. Model a normal pace and a faster pace only if the school confirms that your transfer credits and course availability support it.

Which current picks may fit different priorities?

  • Want a ranking based on a broader editorial assessment: Start with the BestColleges trio, then independently verify cost, accreditation and delivery details.
  • Want a fully online eligibility screen and published review data: Examine OnlineU’s list, while treating its ratings as student-review evidence rather than outcome guarantees.
  • Need the lowest displayed tuition among the three OnlineU examples: SIUE’s $9,855 figure is the lowest shown, but your net cost can differ after residency, aid, fees and transfer credit.
  • Need SHRM-aligned curriculum: Purdue Global provides a catalog statement of alignment; verify the current catalog and distinguish alignment from certification.
  • Have substantial prior college credit: Ask Saint Mary’s and every other finalist for an individualized degree audit; a one-year path is possible only for some students.

Questions to ask an enrollment adviser

  • What institutional and business-school accreditations are current, and which one applies to this degree?
  • Is every course fully online, or are there campus visits, live meetings or field placements?
  • How many of my credits will transfer, and what is the resulting total price and completion time?
  • Which HR courses cover employment law, analytics, compensation, employee relations and talent management?
  • Are internships mandatory, and who arranges and approves the placement?
  • What state-authorization limits, professional requirements or employer restrictions apply where I live?
  • What are the refund, withdrawal and leave policies if my work schedule changes?

The Bottom Line

Choose the program that fits your verified net cost, accreditation, HR curriculum and schedule—not the school that happens to lead one ranking. The 2026 lists are useful starting points, but they are not historical 2022 rankings or promises of career results.
