9 Best Sites to Buy a Refurbished MacBook or Mac in 2026

Apple Certified Refurbished is the safest choice, but Back Market, OWC, Best Buy, eBay, and specialist retailers may offer better selection or pricing. Compare warranties, batteries, configurations, and return protection before buying.

Apple’s Certified Refurbished Store is the safest overall choice for buying a refurbished Mac in the United States because Apple performs full functional testing and includes a one-year limited warranty. Back Market is the best broad-market alternative for selection and discounts, while OWC/MacSales and Mac of All Trades are especially useful for older Intel Macs and unusual configurations.

The best site depends on the protection you want. A marketplace may offer a lower price, but the individual seller, battery condition, parts, charger, warranty provider, and return deadline matter as much as the headline discount.

The best places to buy a refurbished Mac at a glance

Site Best for Main strength Main weakness Buyer effort
Apple Certified Refurbished Lowest-risk purchase Apple testing and one-year warranty Limited inventory and smaller discounts Low
Back Market Selection and discounts Many listings and condition categories Refurbisher quality varies Moderate
Amazon Renewed Convenience Familiar checkout and large catalog Seller and listing variation Moderate
eBay Refurbished Competitive pricing Deep inventory Requires careful listing analysis High
OWC/MacSales Older Macs and specialist configurations Mac-focused catalog Not always the cheapest Moderate
Mac of All Trades Specialist used-Mac shopping Dedicated Mac inventory Stock and terms vary Moderate
Best Buy Local pickup and returns Physical stores and inspection programs Open-box and marketplace categories differ Low to moderate
Gazelle Simpler retailer shopping More curated used-device experience Narrower selection Low to moderate
Swappa Peer-to-peer pricing Useful listing-level market comparison Less manufacturer-style protection High

Policies, inventory, prices, taxes, shipping, and AppleCare eligibility can change. This guide covers U.S. purchasing and should be checked against the live product page before ordering.

How these refurbished Mac sellers differ

“Refurbished” is not a single industry standard. It can describe a manufacturer-certified product, a retailer-tested return, a marketplace seller’s repair work, an open-box computer, or a used Mac that has simply been cleaned and tested.

#1 Best Overall
Apple MacBook Air (13-inch Retina display, 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 128GB) - Gold (Renewed)
  • Stunning 13.3-inch Retina display
  • Touch ID and the latest Apple-designed keyboard
  • Dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel UHD Graphics 617
  • Fast SSD storage and 8GB memory
  • Stereo speakers with wider stereo sound
Label What it may mean Typical risk
Apple Certified Refurbished Apple-controlled testing, packaging, and Apple warranty Lowest
Retailer-certified refurbished A retailer or service partner inspected and prepared the unit Low to medium
Marketplace refurbished A third-party seller met the platform’s requirements Medium
Open box A previously sold or returned product; not necessarily fully refurbished Medium
Used or pre-owned A prior owner’s device with varying condition Medium to high
Seller refurbished The seller performed some work under its own standard Highly variable

Cosmetic grade and functional quality are separate. A Mac can work correctly while having screen scratches, keyboard shine, dents, worn ports, a replaced display, or a low-capacity battery. Grading terms such as “Excellent,” “Good,” and “Fair” are not universal, so read each site’s definitions rather than comparing the labels as if they meant the same thing.

1. Apple Certified Refurbished Store: best overall and safest

Best for: Buyers who want the closest experience to purchasing new.

Apple says its certified refurbished products receive full functional testing, include a one-year limited warranty, and may be discounted by up to 15%. Apple also describes new packaging, free shipping, and returns for its refurbished products. Visit the official refurbished store and Apple’s refurbished-product information page.

This is the default recommendation when minimizing transaction risk matters more than finding the lowest possible price. You deal directly with Apple, receive Apple’s normal support ecosystem, and avoid most seller-by-seller uncertainty.

Trade-offs

  • Inventory is limited and changes frequently.
  • Older Macs and unusual memory or storage configurations may be unavailable.
  • The discount may be small enough that a new Mac on sale is better value.
  • Apple’s refurbished inventory can lag the newest generation.

Do not assume that a refurbished Mac receives every replacement treatment Apple describes for refurbished iPhones and other iOS devices. Apple’s page specifically discusses a new battery and outer shell for refurbished iOS devices; its Mac information emphasizes testing and warranty instead.

Choose Apple when: you want low buyer effort, Apple-backed service, and a clear warranty. Skip it when: the desired configuration is unavailable or a new equivalent is only slightly more expensive.

2. Back Market: best marketplace selection and discounts

Best for: Buyers who want a broad catalog and are willing to compare individual listings.

Back Market’s U.S. MacBook marketplace currently advertises a 30-day return window and one-year commercial warranty. Its marketplace structure provides access to many MacBook generations, configurations, and cosmetic grades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advantage is choice: you may find a particular Apple Silicon or Intel configuration that Apple does not carry. The disadvantage is that Back Market is not one refurbishing facility. The individual refurbisher, condition description, battery language, accessories, and warranty process still matter.

Before ordering

  • Read the exact condition and battery description for the listing.
  • Identify the refurbisher and review its seller information.
  • Confirm whether the charger is included and whether it is Apple-branded or third-party.
  • Check who handles warranty claims and whether return shipping is covered.
  • Compare the total price with Apple’s current new and refurbished prices.

Choose Back Market when: selection and value are priorities. Skip it when: you want Apple-only refurbishment or do not want to evaluate seller-level details.

3. Amazon Renewed: convenient, but inspect the seller

Best for: Buyers who value familiar checkout, delivery, and returns.

Rank #2
Apple MacBook Air (13-inch Retina display, 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 128GB) - Space Gray (Renewed)
  • Stunning 13.3-inch Retina display
  • Touch ID and the latest Apple-designed keyboard
  • Dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel UHD Graphics 617
  • Fast SSD storage and 8GB memory
  • Stereo speakers with wider stereo sound

Amazon’s MacBook Renewed listings can provide a large selection and multiple sellers for the same model. Convenience is the main benefit, but “Renewed” does not mean every Mac came from one refurbishment center. The actual seller and listing terms remain important.

Product pages may differ in battery disclosure, cosmetic condition, replacement parts, included charger, warranty language, and fulfillment. Search results can also mix new, used, open-box, and renewed products.

Before buying, save screenshots of the listing, seller, stated condition, warranty language, and included accessories. Verify the current terms on Amazon’s Renewed program page and on the individual product page. Do not assume a particular battery percentage or warranty term unless the live listing explicitly provides it.

Choose Amazon Renewed when: the seller is established and the price advantage is meaningful. Skip it when: an expensive Mac has vague battery information, unclear refurbishment details, or weak seller history.

4. eBay Refurbished: strong prices for careful shoppers

Best for: Experienced buyers who want aggressive pricing and broad inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

eBay Refurbished and Apple laptop listings cover many Apple Silicon and Intel generations. Filters make it possible to compare processor, memory, storage, model, and condition.

Use the platform’s formal refurbished designation where available. “Refurbished,” “pre-owned,” “open box,” and “seller refurbished” are not interchangeable. Check the seller, photos, parts disclosure, battery information, keyboard layout, charger, warranty, and return conditions. International listings can introduce different plugs, keyboards, taxes, repair arrangements, and warranty complications.

Choose eBay when: you are comfortable evaluating listings and seller terms. Skip it when: you want standardized preparation and minimal inspection work.

5. OWC/MacSales: best specialist source for older Macs

Best for: Older Intel Macs, desktops, high-memory systems, and unusual configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OWC/MacSales’ used and refurbished Mac catalog is particularly useful when Apple no longer sells the model you need. The company’s Mac-focused business also makes it easier to find desktops, older MacBooks, storage, upgrades, and related hardware in one place.

Check the product-level warranty, battery status, condition, included accessories, and return terms. A specialist retailer is not automatically the cheapest, but a slightly higher price may be worthwhile if the configuration and support are better documented.

Rank #3
Apple MacBook Air Late 2020 with Apple M1 Chip (13.3 inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) Space Gray (Renewed)
  • Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
  • Go longer than ever with up to 18 hours of battery life
  • Up to eight GPU cores with up to 5x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games

Be especially cautious with low-priced Intel Macs. They may have shorter remaining software support, poorer battery life, more heat and fan noise, older ports, and lower resale value.

Choose OWC when: you need an older or unusual Mac and want a specialist catalog. Skip it when: you only want the newest MacBook at the lowest price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Mac of All Trades: specialist used-Mac retailer

Best for: Buyers who prefer a dedicated Mac retailer instead of a general marketplace.

Mac of All Trades focuses on used and refurbished Apple hardware, including MacBooks, iMacs, Mac minis, and other Macs. A specialist catalog can make it easier to compare generations and configurations than a general marketplace.

Terms vary by product, so verify the current warranty, return period, battery disclosure, charger, and cosmetic grade on the individual page. Compare the complete price with Apple, OWC, and marketplace listings rather than relying on the retailer’s specialist branding alone.

Choose Mac of All Trades when: you want a focused used-Mac inventory. Skip it when: the required configuration is out of stock or another seller offers materially stronger protection at a similar price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Best Buy: best for local pickup and physical returns

Best for: Buyers who want to inspect, collect, or return a computer through a physical retail network.

Best Buy listings can include refurbished, open-box, clearance, and marketplace inventory. These categories may have different warranties and return rules. The Geek Squad Certified open-box checklist describes multipoint inspection of functions such as the keyboard, trackpad, ports, wireless connectivity, display, casing, speakers, webcam, battery, adapter, cleaning, and factory reset.

Open box is not identical to manufacturer-refurbished. Confirm whether the listing is sold by Best Buy, Geek Squad Certified, or a third-party marketplace seller. Local stock can be valuable because an in-store return may be easier than shipping a defective Mac to an unknown seller.

Choose Best Buy when: local pickup and physical returns matter. Skip it when: the listing is third-party or the open-box price is only slightly below a new Mac.

8. Gazelle: best for a simpler retailer experience

Best for: Buyers who prefer standardized retailer shopping over seller-by-seller comparisons.

Rank #4
New Apple MacBook Pro (13-inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB Storage) - Space Gray (Renewed)
  • Quad-core 8th-Generation Intel Core i5 Processor
  • Brilliant Retina Display with True Tone technology
  • Touch Bar and Touch ID
  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645
  • Ultrafast SSD

Gazelle’s Mac marketplace offers used Apple computers through a dedicated used-device retailer. Its approach can be easier to navigate than a broad marketplace, particularly when comparing condition grades.

Inventory is generally narrower, and uncommon memory or storage configurations may be unavailable. Read the current product page for battery-health language, warranty, return period, grading definitions, and charger details.

Choose Gazelle when: you value a simpler purchase process. Skip it when: you need a high-memory, high-storage, or unusual Mac configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Swappa: best for transparent peer-to-peer pricing

Best for: Experienced buyers who want used-market pricing.

Swappa’s MacBook marketplace provides individual listings, photos, and a useful view of asking prices across generations. It can avoid some retail markup, but it is not equivalent to Apple Certified Refurbished.

Inspect the seller’s description and photos for battery health, Activation Lock status, display defects, repairs, keyboard layout, charger, and accessories. Confirm what warranty, if any, applies. Use Swappa’s payment and dispute procedures, and never move payment or communication outside the platform at a seller’s request.

Choose Swappa when: you can evaluate an individual listing and want market pricing. Skip it when: you want Apple-backed service or standardized refurbishment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which refurbished Mac seller is right for you?

  • Safest purchase: Apple Certified Refurbished.
  • Broad selection with meaningful protection: Back Market, after checking the refurbisher and listing.
  • Maximum marketplace choice: Amazon Renewed or eBay Refurbished.
  • Older Intel Mac or specialist configuration: OWC/MacSales or Mac of All Trades.
  • Local pickup and easier physical returns: Best Buy, provided the listing is sold by Best Buy and its category is clear.
  • Simpler used-device retailer: Gazelle.
  • Peer-to-peer value: Swappa.

Apple Silicon or Intel?

Most buyers should prefer Apple Silicon unless they have a specific compatibility reason to choose Intel. Apple Silicon generally offers newer designs, stronger energy efficiency, better battery life, and better long-term relevance for current software.

Intel may still make sense for Boot Camp, a particular Windows workflow, older plug-ins or drivers, legacy enterprise software, older peripherals, a very low purchase price, or a desktop that does not need battery efficiency. Do not label every Intel Mac unusable, but check whether the required applications and intended macOS version support that exact model. Apple’s current macOS compatibility list should be consulted at the time of purchase because support changes by model and operating-system release.

Choose memory and storage before cosmetic grade

Many modern Macs use non-upgradable unified memory and soldered storage. A newer Mac with 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage may be a worse long-term purchase than an older Apple Silicon model with 16GB and 512GB.

  • 8GB memory: Suitable mainly for light use and very low prices.
  • 16GB: A safer baseline for school, productivity, browsing, coding, and moderate creative work.
  • 24GB or more: Better for professional creative applications, development environments, virtual machines, and longer ownership.
  • 256GB storage: Adequate for light users who rely on cloud or external storage.
  • 512GB: A better default for applications, photos, work files, and everyday use.
  • 1TB or more: Appropriate for video, photography, development datasets, music libraries, and users who dislike external drives.

What to check before buying

  1. Exact configuration: Confirm model year, chip, screen size, memory, storage, ports, and keyboard layout.
  2. Battery: Look for maximum capacity, cycle count, service warnings, replacement status, and any minimum-capacity guarantee. Not every seller discloses all of these.
  3. Charger: Confirm that the correct Apple charger, USB-C cable, MagSafe cable, and adequate-wattage adapter are included.
  4. Condition: Read the site’s own cosmetic grading definition and determine whether photos show the actual computer or stock images.
  5. Parts: Check whether the battery, display, keyboard, or charger was replaced and whether the seller identifies parts as genuine Apple components.
  6. Warranty: Identify who honors it, how long it lasts, whether battery wear is covered, and whether shipping is included.
  7. Returns: Note the deadline, restocking fee, return-shipping responsibility, and condition requirements. The return deadline may be much shorter than the warranty period.
  8. AppleCare: Never assume eligibility. Verify it with Apple using the serial number and purchase documentation.
  9. Ownership status: Confirm the Mac will not be Activation Locked or enrolled in an organization’s remote-management system.

What to do when the refurbished Mac arrives

Start testing immediately. Keep the packaging and do not remove protective film or make alterations until the basic inspection is complete.

  • Test every USB-C, Thunderbolt, MagSafe, HDMI, SD-card, and headphone port included on the model.

Document problems

Photograph the package, computer, serial number, display, accessories, and any damage. Save the listing and condition description. If the specification, battery, or condition differs materially from the listing, contact the seller through the platform and start the return or dispute process before the deadline.

Common problems and the correct response

The Mac has lower specifications than advertised

Photograph the model information and serial number, compare them with the invoice, and contact the seller through the platform. Request a return or replacement before attempting repairs or upgrades.

The battery is worse than expected

Capture battery-health and cycle-count information. Compare it with the seller’s stated threshold or description. Ask for a remedy or return rather than accepting “normal wear” when a minimum condition was promised.

Activation Lock appears

Do not attempt to bypass it. Contact the seller immediately and initiate a platform dispute or return if the seller cannot remove the lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote management appears

Photograph the management screen and ask the seller to remove the organization’s enrollment. Return the Mac if the seller cannot prove it has been released.

A port, display, or keyboard fails

Record a short video, test with a known-good cable or accessory, preserve the packaging, and use the return window before relying on a longer warranty claim.

The charger is wrong or third-party

Check connector compatibility and wattage rather than assuming that a matching connector is sufficient. Request the promised charger or return the complete package.

Is refurbished better than buying new?

Compare the refurbished Mac with both Apple’s current new price and current sale prices—not just the original launch price. Refurbished is usually attractive when the configuration meets your needs, the warranty is meaningful, the total delivered price is materially lower, and the model will support your software for the ownership period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying new may be better when the refurbished discount is small, a current model has materially better battery life or ports, you need the longest possible software-support runway, or you want the cleanest Apple warranty start date and maximum AppleCare flexibility.

A large discount can be misleading if it buys less memory, less storage, a worn battery, a missing charger, a short warranty, or an unsupported Intel Mac. Compare identical configurations and include tax, shipping, accessories, and the possible cost of a battery replacement.
