Sony’s PlayStation Direct UK Autumn Sale, reported on 22 September 2025, reduced selected PS5 models by up to £90. The standout offer was the PS5 Slim Digital Edition at £339.99, down from £429.99.
That price should now be treated as historical, not current. Sony subsequently raised PS5 prices globally from 2 April 2026, while Microsoft increased Xbox prices from 1 August 2026. The original promotion therefore makes an important retrospective comparison, but it was not a permanent PS5 price cut.

The promotion was available through PlayStation Direct UK. It was a promotional discount, rather than a permanent reduction in Sony’s recommended price. Sony’s promotional terms allow offers to end when the stated period expires, the offer is changed or it is removed.
The £339.99 console was the Digital Edition. It did not include a built-in disc drive, so it could not play boxed PS5 or PS4 games, used discs, borrowed games or Blu-ray discs.

Which offer was actually best?
Best headline saving: the digital PS5
The digital model delivered the largest cash discount: £90. It was the strongest option for someone who buys almost every game digitally, does not own physical PS4 games and is comfortable with prices and availability in the PlayStation Store.
However, the lower upfront price came with a long-term trade-off. Digital-only buyers cannot shop the second-hand disc market, resell games, borrow discs or use an existing physical collection. Those savings can matter over several years, particularly for households that buy games at launch and later sell them.
Best flexibility: the disc PS5
The disc-equipped model cost £434.99 in the sale—£95 more than the discounted digital model—but it supported both physical and digital games. It was the safer choice for anyone with a PS4 disc collection, anyone who regularly buys used games, or anyone who wanted a 4K Blu-ray player.
A buyer could consider adding a separate disc drive to the digital console later, but that does not automatically preserve the £90 saving. The drive’s price, availability and compatibility must be checked at the time. Sony had previously reduced the UK disc-drive RRP to £69.99 in April 2025, but that is not a current price guarantee.

The £634.99 bundle included a PS5 Slim and 24 months of PlayStation Plus Premium. Premium includes online multiplayer, a game catalogue, classic games and limited game trials, among other benefits.

The bundle’s £45 discount was meaningful only if the buyer expected to use Premium for the full two years. It was not automatically cheaper for someone who would not otherwise buy the subscription. Subscription prices and benefits can change, so the historical value should not be treated as a current quote.
How Xbox prices changed the comparison
The Xbox reference added urgency to the original story, but it was not a complete same-day PS5-versus-Xbox price comparison. “Xbox” covers different consoles, storage capacities and performance levels.
A fair comparison would match:
- the digital PS5 against a comparable digital Xbox model;
- the disc-equipped PS5 against Xbox Series X;
- storage capacity and performance tier;
- physical-media support;
- included games and subscription costs; and
- whether each system was new, refurbished or previously owned.
Xbox Series S is generally the lower-cost Xbox entry point, but it is less powerful than Xbox Series X and has no disc drive. That means the £339.99 digital PS5 should not simply be described as “cheaper than Xbox” without naming the exact Xbox model, country, retailer and date.
Nor is there evidence that Sony introduced the promotion because Microsoft raised prices. The two developments were presented together, but that does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship.
What happened after the 2025 sale?
The original bargain became more significant in hindsight because both manufacturers later raised prices.

Sony’s later PS5 increases
Sony raised US prices effective 21 August 2025, listing the standard PS5 at $549.99, the Digital Edition at $499.99 and PS5 Pro at $749.99. Sony attributed the change to a challenging economic environment. See Sony’s US pricing announcement.
From 2 April 2026, Sony announced further global pricing changes. The listed UK prices became:

- PS5: £569.99;
- PS5 Digital Edition: £519.99; and
- PS5 Pro: £789.99.
The corresponding listed prices were $649.99, $599.99 and $899.99 in the US, and €649.99, €599.99 and €899.99 in Europe. These are later official prices, not the 2025 sale prices. Sony said continuing global economic pressures required the increases. Details are in Sony’s April 2026 announcement.
Microsoft’s August 2026 Xbox increase
Microsoft announced another worldwide Xbox price increase effective 1 August 2026. According to Microsoft’s announcement:
- 512GB models increased by US$100;
- 1TB models increased by US$150; and
- the 2TB model was being discontinued.
Microsoft said storage and memory costs had risen by more than 2.5 times and cited that as part of its explanation. That is Microsoft’s stated reason, not independently established proof that component costs alone caused the increase.

Microsoft also highlighted financing, previously played consoles and certified refurbished systems. Financing depends on country, eligibility, provider and terms, so it should not be assumed to be available everywhere or cheaper overall.

Should you buy a PS5 now?
The answer depends on whether you are considering the historical deal or buying after it.
If you are assessing the old £339.99 offer
It was worth acting on for a digital-only buyer who wanted a PS5 immediately. The £90 saving was genuine and larger than the discounts on the disc model and subscription bundle.
It was less attractive for a physical-game buyer. Paying £95 more for the disc console bought flexibility that could recover its cost through used games, resale and access to cheaper boxed releases.
If you are shopping now
Do not assume the Autumn Sale is still available. Deal pages can remain indexed after an offer ends, and the checkout price is the final test. Check PlayStation Direct UK, the official deals page and major retailers for a currently verified price.

Also compare the total ownership cost, not just the console sticker price:
- the cost of physical or digital games;
- PlayStation Plus or Xbox subscription fees;
- the cost of a later disc drive;
- storage expansion;
- additional controllers and accessories; and
- whether a certified refurbished or previously owned system has a meaningful discount and acceptable warranty terms.
Waiting for another promotion may be sensible if you do not need a console immediately. PlayStation runs recurring events such as Days of Play and Black Friday promotions, but dates, participating products and discounts vary by year. The official deals and events page is the appropriate place to check upcoming offers.
How to compare the PS5 and Xbox financially
Start with the platform rather than the headline discount. Choose PlayStation if its games, controller and ecosystem are the better fit. Xbox may be preferable for someone prioritising Game Pass, backward compatibility, cross-device play or access to Microsoft’s first-party ecosystem.
Then compare like for like. A digital PS5 should be compared with a digital Xbox alternative; a disc PS5 with Xbox Series X. Record the storage capacity, physical-media support, included subscriptions, bundle contents and warranty. Finally, price the games you actually expect to buy. A cheaper console can become more expensive if its game-buying model does not suit you.
For a price-sensitive buyer who missed the PS5 promotion, refurbished or previously played hardware may reduce the upfront cost. Check the exact condition, included accessories, storage, return period and warranty before buying.
