The $70 Apple AirTag four-pack was a real Amazon deal, but it is not a current offer that should be treated as available today. Engadget reported the promotion on December 27, 2024, when four first-generation AirTags sold for $70 instead of $100. That worked out to $17.50 per tracker. Later coverage reported a lower $64.99 price in October 2025, so the $70 promotion is no longer safely described as an all-time record low.
Apple now lists a second-generation AirTag introduced in 2026, meaning shoppers should also check which generation a retailer is selling before comparing prices.
What the $70 AirTag deal included
The original promotion covered a four-pack of first-generation Apple AirTags sold through Amazon in the United States. The reported price was:
- Sale price: $70
- Comparison price: $100
- Savings: $30, or about 30%
- Cost per tracker: $17.50
Engadget called $70 a record low when it reported the deal on December 27, 2024. That description needs a date boundary: a later report cited a $64.99 four-pack in October 2025. The historical $70 price was attractive, but it is not evidence that a retailer is offering the same deal now.

Check the generation before buying
The $70 deal involved the first-generation AirTag, which Apple introduced in 2021. Apple’s current lineup includes a second-generation AirTag introduced in 2026, with a louder speaker and expanded Precision Finding features.
Retailers may still have first-generation inventory, while other listings may be for the newer model. Check the product description, model number, seller, condition and package quantity rather than assuming every four-pack is identical. Apple’s model-identification guide can help distinguish generations.
Specifications also differ. First-generation AirTags require an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. Apple’s current specifications for the second-generation model require an iPhone running iOS 26.0 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 26.0 or later.

What an AirTag actually does
An AirTag is a Bluetooth item tracker, not a standalone GPS device. When it is nearby, you can use the Find My app to locate it or make it play a sound. When it is out of Bluetooth range, nearby Apple devices can anonymously detect it and relay an approximate location through Apple’s Find My network.

Updates may be delayed in areas with few nearby Apple devices, and a stale map location does not prove that the item is still there.
AirTag also supports Lost Mode and NFC. Someone who finds a lost tag can tap it with an NFC-capable phone to view the contact information the owner chose to provide. Apple says Find My location data is encrypted and that devices relaying a tag’s location remain anonymous.

Who benefits from buying four?
A four-pack makes sense for an iPhone household tracking several frequently misplaced or valuable items, such as:
- Keys and wallets
- Backpacks, purses and camera bags
- Checked luggage and travel cases
- Remote controls or shared household equipment
- Bicycles when used with a suitable mount
If you need only one tracker, buying a four-pack ties up more money and leaves you with unused devices. Android-first households should generally consider a tracker designed for Google or Samsung’s ecosystem instead. Android phones can detect unwanted AirTags and read an AirTag’s NFC information, but they cannot provide the full Find My ownership experience.
What is not included
AirTags include a replaceable battery, but they do not have a built-in keyring hole or attachment loop. You may need separate key rings, luggage holders, adhesive mounts, protective cases or bike mounts. Those accessories can materially change the cost of outfitting four items.

A retailer listing can also change from Apple-sold inventory to a third-party seller, or from new stock to refurbished or used stock. Before purchasing, check the seller, condition, return policy, delivery date, package quantity and whether the displayed price requires a coupon or membership.
Battery life and safety
Apple says an AirTag works for more than a year on a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. When the battery is low, replace it rather than assuming the item has moved or disappeared.
Apple’s replacement procedure is to press down on the polished metal cover, rotate it counterclockwise, remove the cover and old battery, then insert a CR2032 with the positive side facing up. Wait for the confirmation sound, replace the cover and rotate it clockwise until it stops. Some bitterant-coated CR2032 batteries may not work correctly, so check the battery packaging for AirTag compatibility. Apple’s battery instructions also include important warnings about coin-cell ingestion.

Keep new and used batteries away from children. Coin batteries can cause serious injury or death if swallowed, and the AirTag, cover and battery can present choking or ingestion hazards.

AirTag has an IP67 rating under IEC 60529. Laboratory testing covers immersion to a maximum depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes. Apple still describes water resistance as something that can decline with normal wear, so “waterproof” is too strong a description.
Privacy, sharing and travel limitations
AirTags include unwanted-tracking protections designed to alert iPhone and Android users when an unknown tracker appears to be traveling with them. Those safeguards are important, but they can create friction when a family member borrows a tagged bag, vehicle or other shared item.
Apple says its current AirTag product page supports sharing an item with up to five people. Apple also describes temporary sharing of an item’s location with others, including participating airlines, with sharing ending after the item is reunited or seven days have passed. Airline workflows, supported services and regional availability may differ, so this should not be treated as a guarantee for every carrier or trip.
Should you buy an AirTag four-pack?
- Buy or consider it: You use an iPhone, need several trackers and value direct Find My integration.
- Buy a single tracker instead: You have only one important item to monitor.
- Compare other ecosystems: You primarily use Android, Samsung Galaxy or Google devices.
- Skip AirTag: You need real-time, independent GPS tracking over cellular networks.
- Wait and compare: You specifically want the second-generation model but are considering discounted first-generation stock.
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is designed for Samsung users. Tile offers cross-platform trackers, while Chipolo and Pebblebee sell models built for either Apple’s Find My network or Google’s Find My Device network. Compatibility varies by model, so compare the exact ecosystem version rather than the brand alone.
The practical verdict is straightforward: $70 was a good historical price for four first-generation AirTags, especially for an iPhone household with several items to track. It was not the lowest price reported later, and it should not be presented as a live deal without a current retailer check. When evaluating any new offer, compare the generation, seller, accessories and ecosystem compatibility—not just the headline price.
