Bell did not announce one identical internet increase for every Canadian customer. However, some customers reported repeated bill increases during 2025, and Bell said certain rates in Quebec and Ontario were scheduled to rise in 2026. As of September 2026, those announced effective dates have passed, so the explanation for a bill you are seeing now must be checked against your account, notice, contract and itemized bills.
Bell told MobileSyrup that Quebec Internet, TV and home-phone rates were scheduled to increase in February 2026, while Bell Internet rates in Ontario were scheduled to increase in March 2026. Bell attributed the changes to rising operating costs and an evolving market, and said affected customers would receive 60 days’ advance notice.
What happened to Bell customers’ bills?
In a December 2025 report, MobileSyrup described Bell customers reporting multiple increases during the year. One customer said the monthly charge moved through several amounts, rising from approximately $105 to $132, although the report noted that the exact starting price and billing details were not fully clear.
Other reports involved bundles containing internet, TV, home phone, mobile service, Crave or Starz. Those examples cannot automatically be treated as internet-only increases. At least one customer reported paying less while receiving a faster service tier, showing that Bell customers did not all receive the same outcome.

These were customer reports, not an independently audited record of every Bell account. The strongest conclusion is that some customers experienced repeated bill changes and that Bell confirmed province-specific 2026 rate increases.

Why your bill may have increased
A higher total does not necessarily mean Bell applied a new internet base rate. Common explanations include:

- A recurring base-rate increase: the regular monthly service price changed.
- An expired promotion: a temporary credit ended, making the bill appear to jump.
- A bundle adjustment: changing or cancelling TV, mobile, home phone or streaming services altered a bundle discount.
- A plan or speed change: the account moved to another tier or package.
- Equipment or optional-service charges: a modem, gateway, receiver or add-on appeared on the bill.
- Taxes or one-time charges: the recurring internet line stayed the same, but the total amount due increased.
- An account-specific offer ending: a retention or loyalty credit may have expired.
- A billing error: the charge may not match the agreement or Bell’s notice.
Do not label an expired discount a new rate increase unless the bill or notice shows that the regular service price itself changed.
How to check whether the increase is legitimate
- Compare two or three consecutive bills.
- Record the bill date, service address, province and plan name.
- Compare the regular internet charge, promotional credit, equipment charge, bundle discount, taxes and one-time fees separately.
- Check the advertised download speed and whether the plan or equipment changed.
- Find the promotion’s expiry date and the date the new charge took effect.
- Look for Bell’s email, letter, MyBell message, bill insert or account notification.
- Compare the notice with the actual recurring charge.
Bell said affected customers would receive 60 days’ advance notice. If you cannot find that notice, ask Bell when it was sent, how it was delivered and which service and charge it covered.
When contacting Bell, use a specific request:
“Please identify every recurring charge that changed, the previous amount, the new amount, the effective date, and whether this was a base-rate change or the end of a promotion.”

Then ask for a retention or loyalty review and whether a lower-priced plan is available at your address. Before accepting a replacement plan, request the full monthly cost, including equipment and taxes, along with the promotion’s expiry date and the regular price afterward.
What CRTC protections may apply?
New CRTC consumer protections took effect on June 12, 2026. Under Telecom Regulatory Policy 2026-43, key contract terms—including the minimum monthly price—cannot be changed during the commitment period.

It also does not automatically reverse an increase that occurred before June 12, 2026.

Keep your contract, order confirmation, promotional terms and earlier bills. They can show whether the disputed price was a commitment-period minimum price or a temporary discount.
The CRTC also prohibited activation and modification fees related to changing a telecommunications plan, along with fees primarily intended to discourage changing or cancelling service, subject to exceptions such as physical installation and optional products or services. The prohibition took effect June 12, 2026.
The CRTC later opened a show-cause proceeding involving fees introduced by Bell, TELUS and Rogers that may conflict with the prohibition. This remains an active regulatory process, not a final finding that Bell violated the rules.

Beginning April 26, 2027, providers will also have to offer self-service mechanisms for modifying or cancelling internet and cellphone plans under Telecom Decision 2026-78.

First ask Bell for a lower plan or retention offer. If you compare another provider, compare the complete cost rather than the advertised introductory price:
- download and upload speeds;
- fibre, cable or another access technology;
- regular price after the promotion;
- modem, gateway and Wi-Fi charges;
- installation fees and timing;
- contract or financing terms;
- data caps and cancellation conditions;
- equipment-return requirements;
- support and outage expectations.
Availability is address-specific. The CRTC says incumbent fibre-network access could create new retail options for up to 8.5 million Canadian households, but that figure does not guarantee a competing service at your address. TELUS and other competitors may use wholesale fibre arrangements in some areas, while independent ISPs may use Bell or another incumbent’s network under different equipment and support arrangements.
Before cancelling Bell, confirm the replacement provider’s installation date and service availability. Also obtain Bell’s equipment-return instructions for the modem, gateway, receivers or other rented equipment.

How to escalate an unresolved dispute
If Bell cannot explain the charge, ask for a formal review and keep the representative’s name, case number and promised resolution date. If the issue remains unresolved, use Bell’s complaint process and consider escalating to the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services where appropriate.
Do not assume Bell must restore an old promotional price or that you can cancel without consequences. The available remedy depends on the contract, notice, account history, commitment period and type of charge.
