Excel can retrieve an Indian stock price in three practical ways: the built-in Stocks linked data type, the STOCKHISTORY function, or Power Query connected to a market-data API. For most users, Stocks is the quickest option. However, Microsoft’s Indian exchange data is delayed—not a guaranteed real-time trading feed—so treat every result as the provider’s latest available value.
Microsoft lists a 5-minute delay for the National Stock Exchange of India (XNSE) and a 15-minute delay for the Bombay Stock Exchange (XBOM). Microsoft also says the information is supplied as-is and is not intended for trading or investment advice. See Microsoft’s financial-data-source documentation.
Which Excel method should you use?
| Method | Setup | Best for | Data type | Refresh |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stocks data type | Easy | One or a few recognized stocks | Latest available quote, potentially delayed | Data Type refresh or Refresh All |
STOCKHISTORY |
Easy to moderate | Closing prices, historical tables and charts | Historical data; not a live intraday quote | Recalculation and provider refresh |
| Power Query plus API | Moderate to technical | Unrecognized stocks, watchlists and repeatable imports | Whatever fields and freshness the API supplies | Refresh All or connection refresh |
None of these methods should be described as a guaranteed exchange-grade real-time feed. If you need execution-quality prices, use an appropriate broker, exchange or licensed market-data service.
Before you begin: identify the exact Indian listing
The same company may trade on both NSE and BSE, but the identifiers are not always interchangeable.

- Time-value-of-money and Amortization keys solve problems including: pension calculations, loans, mortgages, etc.
- Ideal calculator for students, managers and statisticians
- Built-in functionality : List-based one- and two-variable statistics with four regression options: linear, logarithmic, exponential and power
- The BA II Plus calculator is approved for use on the following professional exams: Chartered Financial Analyst exam. GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) exam. Certified Management Accountants exam
- NSE: usually uses a company symbol, such as
RELIANCE. - BSE: may use a numeric scrip code, such as
500325for Reliance Industries.
Before accepting Excel’s result, confirm the company name, exchange, symbol or scrip code, currency, and security type. Make sure the result is an equity rather than an ETF, mutual fund, ADR or index. A company name by itself can produce an ambiguous match, a different listing or no match at all.
Microsoft says Excel can search by ticker, company name or fund name. When there is more than one possible match, use the selector pane to choose the correct security and exchange: Microsoft’s stock-quote instructions.
Way 1: Use Excel’s Stocks data type
This is the best no-code approach for a small watchlist when Excel recognizes the Indian security.
Convert a company into a linked stock
- Enter an NSE symbol, BSE code or specific company name in column A.
- Select the cell or range. For a watchlist, you can first use Insert → Table.
- Choose Data → Stocks.
- If Excel displays a match selector, select the correct company and exchange.
- Confirm that the cell shows the linked-stock icon rather than ordinary text.
- Click the Add Column button and select Price.
You can add fields such as Change, Previous Close, Last Trade Time, Exchange, Currency and, where available, Market Cap.
Example worksheet
| Company | Price | Change | Previous Close | Exchange |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reliance Industries | =A2.Price |
=A2.Change |
=A2.PreviousClose |
=A2.Exchange |
The field-reference format above is representative. Depending on your Excel build and locale, inserting fields through the linked-data card or Add Column may be more reliable than manually typing a field name. Available fields can differ between instruments.

Refresh the quote
- Right-click the linked stock cell and choose Data Type → Refresh, where that option is available.
- For the workbook, choose Data → Refresh All.
- Refresh again after the Indian market opens, following a market holiday, or after a connection or provider outage.
Refreshing the workbook is not the same as merely recalculating formulas. A formula recalculation may not request new external data.
What if Excel shows a question mark?
- Correct spelling and remove unnecessary words.
- Try a more specific company name.
- Enter the exchange or ticker where Excel accepts it.
- Click the question-mark icon and use the selector pane.
- Try the alternate NSE or BSE listing.
- If the security still cannot be matched, use the Power Query/API method below.
Do not assume that every NSE or BSE security is available in Excel’s built-in data source.
Way 2: Use STOCKHISTORY
STOCKHISTORY is useful for the latest completed trading-session close, historical tables, charts, returns and date-based analysis. It is a historical-data function—not a live intraday quote formula.
If A2 contains a correctly matched Stocks data-type cell, a recent history table can begin with:
=STOCKHISTORY(A2,TODAY()-7,TODAY(),0,0,1)
For a longer recent period:
=STOCKHISTORY(A2,TODAY()-30,TODAY(),0,0,1)
The function follows this general structure:
STOCKHISTORY(stock, start_date, [end_date], [interval], [headers], [properties])
- stock: a ticker or linked Stocks data-type cell.
- start_date and end_date: the requested date range.
- interval: the supported daily, weekly or other interval option for your Excel implementation.
- headers: whether headings are included.
- properties: requested fields such as date, close, open, high, low and volume, subject to the function and provider’s availability.
See Microsoft’s STOCKHISTORY reference for the current syntax and supported properties.

Finding the latest available close
TODAY() does not guarantee that the output contains a row for today. The Indian market may be closed, today may be a public holiday, or the provider may not yet have published a value. Request several recent days and return the last populated close instead.
For example, if the spill output has dates in column D and closing prices in column E, and headers occupy row 2, an adapted formula could be:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute=LOOKUP(2,1/(E3:E100<>""),E3:E100)
Adjust the range to match your actual spill layout. Check that the returned number is a closing price and that the instrument and exchange are correct.
Common STOCKHISTORY problems
- No row for today: the market is closed, it is an Indian exchange holiday, or the provider has not published the session’s data.
#N/A: the instrument is unsupported, ambiguous or unavailable for the requested dates.- Stale data: the provider has not refreshed, or Excel has recalculated without refreshing the connection.
- Different price from NSE or BSE: the sources may differ in timing, exchange selection, adjustments or corporate-action treatment.
Way 3: Connect Power Query to a stock-market API
Power Query is the most flexible option when Excel cannot recognize a stock, when you have a larger watchlist, or when you want a repeatable table with fields such as symbol, exchange, timestamp, price, volume and daily change.
Basic workflow
- Obtain an API key from your chosen provider.
- In Excel, select Data → Get Data → From Other Sources → From Web.
- Enter the provider’s endpoint and authenticate if required.
- Convert the returned JSON or CSV into a table.
- Expand the quote fields you need.
- Load the result to the worksheet.
- Use Data → Refresh All when you need an updated result.
- Configure connection properties if background or scheduled refresh is suitable for your setup.
Alpha Vantage documents stock APIs, a latest-quote capability and a BSE example using RELIANCE.BSE. Its API-key page explains how to obtain a key, while its documentation contains current endpoint details.

Do not infer an NSE suffix from the BSE example. Confirm the provider’s supported NSE symbol format using its documentation or symbol-search facility.
Provider-specific Power Query example
The following is an illustrative Alpha Vantage-style JSON template. It is not a universal Excel formula. Endpoint behavior, field names, supported exchanges, authentication and quotas can change.
let
ApiKey = "YOUR_API_KEY",
Symbol = "RELIANCE.BSE",
Url =
"https://www.alphavantage.co/query?" &
"function=GLOBAL_QUOTE&symbol=" &
Uri.EscapeDataString(Symbol) &
"&apikey=" & ApiKey,
Source = Json.Document(Web.Contents(Url)),
Quote = Source[#"Global Quote"],
Result =
#table(
{"Symbol", "Price", "Change", "ChangePercent", "LatestTradingDay"},
{{
Quote[#"01. symbol"],
Number.FromText(Quote[#"05. price"]),
Number.FromText(Quote[#"09. change"]),
Quote[#"10. change percent"],
Date.FromText(Quote[#"07. latest trading day"])
}}
)
in
Result
Replace the placeholder API key and symbol, then verify the response before loading it. If a provider returns an error message instead of quote fields, inspect the raw response rather than expanding it as though it were a valid quote.
API method trade-offs
Advantages: you can preserve the chosen symbol and exchange, import custom fields, centralize a watchlist and repeat the same transformation on refresh.
Disadvantages: setup is more technical; API keys, quotas, rate limits, attribution rules, licensing and provider coverage all matter. A free API key is not the same thing as a free real-time exchange feed. Do not distribute a public workbook containing your personal API key.
Best Value
- Brand New in box; The product ships with all relevant accessories
- Dedicated keys allow easy access to common financial and statistics functions
- Easy-to-use design provides business, finance and statistical calculations fast
- Specially designed to meet the mathematical needs
Troubleshooting checklist
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stocks button unavailable | Account, edition, build or Office-language limitation | Check your Microsoft account, Excel build and supported editing language; use an API workflow if necessary. |
| Question-mark icon | Ambiguous or unrecognized security | Use the selector pane, a more specific name, or the correct NSE/BSE identifier. |
| No value for today | Market closed, Indian holiday or provider delay | Use the latest available close and check the timestamp. |
#N/A from STOCKHISTORY |
Unsupported instrument or unsuitable date range | Test a known symbol and request a wider range. |
| API error | Bad key, quota limit or unsupported symbol format | Check the provider’s documentation, response message and symbol-search tool. |
| Price differs from NSE or BSE | Delay, adjustment, timing or exchange mismatch | Confirm the exchange, currency, timestamp and whether the series is adjusted. |
| Price does not update | Formula recalculated without external refresh | Use Data → Refresh All or refresh the linked data type and connection. |
Compatibility and data limitations
Stocks linked data and STOCKHISTORY are service-backed features. Microsoft’s documentation associates Stocks data with Microsoft 365 accounts or eligible free Microsoft Accounts and names English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese as supported Office editing languages. Availability can also depend on the Excel build, platform, account and region.
Do not assume that Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 or 2024 exposes every Stocks feature merely because a Microsoft support page lists those products in its applicability information. Check the actual build and account entitlement. Excel for the web may also have different capabilities from desktop Excel.
Prices should be formatted as Indian rupees only after confirming that the returned currency is INR. Splits, bonuses, dividends and other corporate actions can make historical and current values appear inconsistent, especially when comparing adjusted historical data with an unadjusted quote.
How to verify a result
For an important analysis, compare the company, exchange, price and timestamp with an official source such as the NSE equity quote page or the relevant BSE source. Manual verification is particularly important when Excel has matched a company name rather than an exact identifier.

Bottom line
Use Stocks data type for the fastest small watchlist, STOCKHISTORY for historical prices and the latest completed close, and Power Query with an API when you need broader coverage, custom fields or repeatable refreshes. In every case, confirm NSE versus BSE and treat “current” as the provider’s latest available data unless you have a separately licensed real-time feed.
