Re:

EMC’s Dantz Acquisition: An SMB, Channel and Macintosh Backup Play

EMC bought Dantz to extend its backup and storage business into small companies, Macintosh-heavy creative markets and established OEM and reseller channels.

EMC’s acquisition of Dantz was a small deal with a broad strategic purpose. Reported at less than $50 million in cash, the transaction gave EMC the Retrospect backup product, an entry point into small-business storage, stronger access to Macintosh-centered customers, and Dantz’s OEM, distributor and solution-provider relationships. EMC was not simply adding another enterprise backup platform: it was extending its reach downward from larger storage environments.

CRN’s contemporary report also makes clear that the opportunity had limits. Dantz was regarded as particularly strong in Macintosh backup, but its recognition among Windows and Linux customers was less established. The acquisition’s logic was therefore complementary rather than transformational.

The deal in brief

Element What the contemporary report establishes
Buyer EMC
Target Dantz, the company behind Retrospect backup software
Reported consideration Less than $50 million in cash
Primary strategic targets SMB backup, Macintosh customers, OEMs, distributors and solution providers
Core product acquired Retrospect, positioned as entry-level backup and recovery software

The reported price matters because it frames the acquisition correctly. This was a modest cash transaction for EMC, not a purchase that by itself could remake the enterprise backup market. Its value lay in access: access to smaller customers, a different sales motion, a specialized platform community and routes to market that EMC could use alongside its existing portfolio.

The available report does not provide an exact announcement or closing date, Dantz’s revenue, its employee count, purchase-accounting treatment or a detailed integration plan. Those facts should not be inferred from the reported price.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Why EMC wanted an entry-level backup product

EMC already had a more capable and more expensive backup offering in Legato NetWorker. That product could serve demanding environments, but it was not necessarily the natural choice for a small organization seeking straightforward backup for a limited storage installation.

Retrospect gave EMC a lower-end option. The report presents it as easier to use and install, with a fit for customers that did not need the complexity or cost associated with a larger enterprise backup deployment. In strategic terms, EMC could offer a broader ladder:

  • Retrospect: simpler, entry-level backup and recovery for small-business and lower-end environments.
  • Legato NetWorker: a more capable and expensive choice for complex or higher-end backup requirements.
  • RepliStor and Co-Standby Server: related Legato products described as serving midsize-business replication and availability needs.

That segmentation is important. The acquisition was not presented as a replacement of NetWorker. It was a way to cover a customer tier that might otherwise find EMC’s enterprise products excessive.

The connection to EMC’s entry-level storage

Dantz’s software also complemented EMC’s push into smaller storage systems. The report specifically identifies EMC’s Clariion AX100 entry-level RAID/SAN product and its NetWin 110 NAS appliance as part of the relevant portfolio.

A solution provider quoted by CRN viewed Retrospect as a particularly natural fit for the AX100. That is channel interpretation, not evidence of a formal bundle, certification or guaranteed integration. The strategic point is nevertheless clear: EMC could pair an entry-level storage platform with backup software aimed at customers that wanted a comparatively simple deployment.

This created a potential solution rather than a standalone software sale. A reseller could discuss storage, backup and recovery together, while EMC gained a product that made its smaller storage offerings more complete for organizations without a large IT department.

Macintosh was a central attraction

The Macintosh opportunity was not incidental. Solution providers quoted in the report described Dantz as particularly strong in Macintosh backup and relevant to Mac-based environments such as video editing, video production and prepress.

For EMC, that offered a foothold in creative-production businesses that were not naturally reached by an enterprise-storage sales strategy. Retrospect’s Mac presence could introduce EMC to customers whose primary concern was protecting project files, media assets and production data rather than building a conventional enterprise storage infrastructure.

Contemporary channel commentary went as far as describing Dantz as owning the Macintosh backup space. That is best understood as an attributed industry opinion, not an independently verified market-share measurement: the report supplies no market-share data or analyst study establishing such a position.

The acquisition illustrates how a software purchase can open a platform ecosystem. EMC was obtaining more than backup functionality; it was acquiring credibility and relationships in a community where its traditional enterprise products had less immediate relevance.

Dantz brought a route to market as well as a product

Dantz’s sales model was another important part of the transaction. Its vice president of sales and marketing reported that approximately:

  • 25% of Dantz product sales came through OEMs, including Western Digital, Maxtor, Sony, Symantec and Iomega.
  • 15% to 20% came through web-based or telephone sales.
  • The remainder came through distributors, including Ingram Micro, Tech Data and Bell Microproducts.

These were company-reported channel figures at the time, not current data and not market-share percentages. They describe how Dantz sold its own products; they do not mean Dantz held 25% of the backup market.

The OEM relationships could place backup software alongside storage hardware. Distributor relationships could give EMC access to established SMB logistics and reseller networks. Solution providers already familiar with Retrospect could potentially add EMC storage discussions to existing customer relationships.

EMC’s own channel might also benefit from having a simpler SMB product to sell. But that outcome was an opportunity, not a guaranteed result. Integration could raise practical questions about pricing, support, branding, partner overlap and whether EMC’s enterprise sales organization would preserve the product’s appeal to smaller resellers.

What the channel saw: opportunity and reservations

The positive case was straightforward. Dantz already had small-business customers, a recognized Macintosh position, OEM access and distributor relationships. EMC brought scale, a broader storage portfolio and existing partner connections. In theory, each company supplied what the other lacked.

  • Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
  • Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring

The reservations were equally important:

  • Dantz had less recognition among Windows and Linux users than among Mac customers.
  • Some solution providers believed its Windows product needed further development before they would regard it as fully dependable.
  • EMC’s larger products were more capable, but their cost and complexity could be excessive for small customers.
  • Ownership by EMC did not automatically guarantee broader distribution or successful product integration.

These concerns limited the immediate reach of the acquisition. Macintosh strength gave EMC a clear differentiator, but it did not automatically translate into leadership across Windows and Linux backup.

Was Dantz a serious threat to Veritas and CA?

EMC said Dantz would help it compete in the small-business backup market against Veritas NetBackup and Computer Associates ARCserve. Ease of use and ease of installation were the stated advantages.

That competitive framing should be kept in proportion. The report does not establish that Retrospect matched those products in enterprise scale, platform breadth or advanced functionality. Nor does it show that the acquisition displaced either competitor.

One solution provider quoted by CRN was skeptical about the immediate threat, suggesting that Veritas and CA were more focused on competing with each other than on Dantz. The more defensible conclusion is that EMC acquired a credible SMB position from which to compete—not that it had acquired a product capable of broadly overturning the market.

The acquisition’s strategic fit

By the criteria EMC appeared to be pursuing, the transaction was coherent:

  • Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives

  • 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
  • It lowered EMC’s entry point in backup.
  • It complemented the AX100 and NetWin 110 small-business storage push.
  • It added a Mac-oriented product and customer base.
  • It supplied OEM, distributor and solution-provider access.
  • It created a clearer product ladder below NetWorker.

By other criteria, the deal was less conclusive. It did not prove immediate enterprise-scale competition, Windows or Linux dominance, or replacement of NetWorker. Nor did the acquisition announcement establish whether EMC would successfully expand Retrospect through its channel.

The distinction between strategic intent and measured outcome is essential. EMC had a plausible reason to buy Dantz, but the contemporary report records expectations and reactions, not post-acquisition sales performance or long-term integration results.

What the deal did—and did not—mean

EMC’s Dantz acquisition was best understood as a portfolio and distribution move. Retrospect filled a lower tier in EMC’s backup lineup, while Dantz’s Macintosh presence gave EMC a route into creative-production markets. Its OEM and distribution model offered a way to reach smaller customers without relying exclusively on EMC’s traditional enterprise sales motion.

At the same time, Dantz’s weaker recognition among Windows and Linux users constrained the deal’s immediate breadth. A strong Mac position was valuable, but it was not equivalent to broad backup-market leadership. The product’s ease of use could help EMC enter SMB accounts, but it did not erase the feature and scale distinctions separating Retrospect from NetWorker and larger competitors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available account does not establish the precise acquisition timeline, EMC’s final integration choices, whether the Retrospect brand was retained, or what commercial results followed. Those questions require separate corporate or archival evidence. On the evidence available here, the acquisition was a targeted attempt to extend EMC’s storage strategy into SMB backup, the channel and Macintosh—not a wholesale change in enterprise backup leadership.
