Blockchain.com Reportedly Seeks CFTC Registrations for U.S. Prediction Markets and Crypto Derivatives

Blockchain.com reportedly seeks CFTC exchange and derivatives-brokerage status for a possible U.S. business. The applications do not establish approval or a U.S. launch.

Blockchain.com has reportedly applied for two different forms of U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) status: designation as a designated contract market (DCM) and registration as a futures commission merchant (FCM). The applications could support a proposed U.S. business involving event contracts and cryptocurrency derivatives, but the reporting does not establish that the CFTC has approved either application or that U.S. customers can use those services.

What did Blockchain.com apply for?

Quartz reported on October 9, 2026, citing CNBC and Blockchain.com, that the company applied for DCM status and FCM registration. The report describes applications, not granted registrations, an approved exchange, or a launched U.S. service. The actual application documents and their terms were not available in the cited reporting. Quartz’s report

  • DCM designation: Quartz describes this as recognition to operate a futures exchange.
  • FCM registration: Quartz describes this as registration for brokerage services in derivatives.

These are distinct regulatory functions, not two names for the same approval. The available reporting does not establish the precise products, operating structure, or conditions Blockchain.com proposed in its filings.

What services might the applications support?

The company reportedly wants to pursue U.S. event-contract and cryptocurrency-derivatives services for retail and institutional customers. Blockchain.com CEO and co-founder Peter Smith described the company’s goal as bringing asset management, derivatives, and event positions together in one platform: “Users should be able to manage their digital assets, trade derivatives, and take positions on real-world events easily, without jumping between different apps,” he said in a statement reproduced by Quartz and attributed to CNBC. That statement expresses the company’s rationale; it does not establish which contracts would be offered, who could access them, or whether regulators would permit them.

Can U.S. customers already use Blockchain.com prediction markets?

The reported existing offerings are limited geographically. Quartz said Blockchain.com had rolled out prediction markets through a Polymarket partnership and perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid for certain customers outside the United States. The report does not establish that either offering is available to U.S. customers, or that those are the products contemplated by the U.S. applications. Quartz’s report

Quartz also noted event-contract offerings associated with Crypto.com and Gemini Space Station, as well as Coinbase’s access through Kalshi. Those examples describe a wider competitive landscape; they do not indicate that Blockchain.com has received U.S. authorization.

What is the CFTC doing on event contracts and crypto?

The agency’s policy work provides context, not a company-specific decision. As of October 9, 2026, the cited CFTC actions were proposals, preliminary rulemaking, or guidance—not approvals of Blockchain.com’s applications.

  • Event contracts: On June 25, 2026, the CFTC announced a proposed reporting framework for certain fully collateralized event contracts and invited public comment. It was a proposal, not a final rule. CFTC announcement, June 25, 2026
  • Retail crypto transactions and markets: On October 5, 2026, the CFTC announced an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking on a potential framework for certain retail crypto-asset transactions and markets. The agency said comments would inform possible future action. This was not authorization for a particular company. CFTC announcement, October 5, 2026
  • Crypto-related registrant guidance: On September 24, 2026, the CFTC announced updated staff FAQs addressing registrant activity involving crypto assets and blockchain technologies, including tokenized permitted investments and blockchain recordkeeping. The update does not resolve the status of Blockchain.com’s applications. CFTC announcement, September 24, 2026
  • Event-contract scrutiny: Quartz reported in July that another CFTC proposal would assess certain event contracts case by case, including categories subject to Commodity Exchange Act and public-interest review. The report said it stopped short of a categorical ban and discussed sports and election contracts. Because the current status and details of that proposal are not established here, it should not be treated as a definitive list of allowed or prohibited contracts. Quartz’s report

Why is prediction-market regulation contested?

Federal and state authorities have disputed who may regulate some prediction-market contracts. Quartz reported that the CFTC had sued nine states while asserting authority over federally registered platforms; states have treated some sports-related event contracts as gambling. That reporting describes active litigation, not a settled rule about which authority controls every contract or platform. Quartz’s report

For customers, the practical point is that an application or a general CFTC rulemaking does not settle the legal status of a particular product in every state. The litigation and rulemaking context may evolve independently of Blockchain.com’s application review.

What is known—and what remains unknown

Question What the cited reporting establishes
Which statuses did Blockchain.com seek? Quartz, citing CNBC and Blockchain.com, reported a DCM application and an FCM registration application on October 9, 2026. The underlying filings were not reviewed.
Has the CFTC approved them? No approval is established by the cited reporting.
Are the proposed U.S. services live? No U.S. launch is established.
What products are in the filings? The precise products, terms, and proposed operating structure are not established.
Is there a decision timeline? A verified timeline is not provided.

Until a company-specific decision and the proposed terms are public, the announcement is best understood as a reported attempt to seek the regulatory status that could support a U.S. derivatives and event-contract business—not as evidence that such a business is approved or operating.
