SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile Plans and the Pressure on AT&T and Verizon Shares

SpaceX's spectrum deal raised fears about Starlink Mobile, but no standalone plan has launched and the purchase still needs FCC approval. Here is what the evidence supports.

The short answer: SpaceX’s October 8, 2026 agreement to buy nationwide low-band spectrum gave investors a reason to price in more competition for US carriers, and AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile shares fell in after-hours trading that day. But as of October 9, 2026, the available evidence shows no standalone Starlink Mobile plan has launched, the spectrum purchase still needs Federal Communications Commission approval, and no public source shows either carrier losing customers or revenue to satellite service. The share move reflects a perceived threat, not a measured loss.

What SpaceX announced on October 8, 2026

SpaceX agreed to acquire a nationwide portfolio of up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum, according to its October 8, 2026 announcement. The company said the spectrum addresses “one of the key remaining technical gaps” for Starlink Mobile to become a major US carrier. Low-band spectrum generally travels farther and passes through walls more easily than higher-frequency bands, so it bears directly on the indoor coverage questions discussed below.

Two qualifiers change how the deal should be read. The 14 MHz is the announced size of the portfolio, not spectrum SpaceX is already permitted to use. Until the Federal Communications Commission acts, the purchase is a plan rather than an asset SpaceX can operate with.

Why the shares fell, and what that does not prove

Financial coverage of the announcement reported that AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile shares declined in after-hours trading. Both a Yahoo Finance report and a same-day Investing.com report describe the sector sell-off, but they do not agree on the size of the decline. Do not quote a single after-hours percentage as a full-session move; the figure depends on the snapshot and its timestamp. For a closing figure, check the next regular trading session.

  • Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs

  • Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky

A same-day move records what investors expect, not what has happened to customers or revenue. The announcement contains no launch date, price or subscriber target for a standalone Starlink Mobile service, so the sell-off is pricing a possibility. T-Mobile illustrates the point. It is already SpaceX’s US partner for satellite messaging, yet it fell alongside AT&T and Verizon. That suggests investors are pricing a sector-wide risk rather than a simple split between winners and losers.

Two Starlink services that are easy to confuse

The share reaction blends two different things. Starlink Direct to Cell is a partner service that already exists in limited form. Starlink Mobile is SpaceX’s proposed standalone carrier. The table separates them.

Question Starlink Direct to Cell Starlink Mobile (proposed)
How it works A phone connects to a satellite that acts as a cell site in space, and the service integrates with a participating operator’s network and spectrum Intended as a standalone US mobile carrier; operating model, network build-out and customer terms are not described in available announcements
Spectrum Partner operator spectrum Up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum, if the purchase is approved
Phones Standard LTE phones, per SpaceX’s February 25, 2025 service notice Not stated in available announcements
Services and carriers Satellite messaging through T-Mobile in the US and One NZ in New Zealand Voice and data offering not stated
Pricing and plans Not stated in the February 2025 service notice Not stated in available announcements
Status Messaging was live as of the February 2025 notice; check current availability before relying on it Announced ambition; no launch date or coverage commitment published

Direct to Cell operates under the FCC’s authorization of SpaceX supplemental coverage from space service in the US, which is summarized in FCC 24-136 (dated December 18, 2024). That authorization covers a partner-based add-on. Whether SpaceX can run its own retail network depends on the spectrum and approvals discussed above, which is a separate question.

How AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are responding

The carriers are not waiting for SpaceX. Two satellite arrangements are in place or on the table, and they differ in maturity.

Arrangement Parties Status as of October 9, 2026 Still open
AT&T and AST SpaceMobile commercial agreement AT&T and AST SpaceMobile Definitive commercial agreement announced May 15, 2024, extending through 2030 (AT&T announcement) The agreement alone does not establish that the planned consumer service is broadly available
Joint venture of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Agreement in principle announced May 14, 2026, to form a venture around direct-to-device satellite technology and pooled spectrum for underserved areas (AT&T announcement) Definitive agreements and customary closing conditions pending

Both arrangements are framed as complements to terrestrial networks aimed at coverage gaps. The joint venture’s wording is the more revealing. In the May 2026 release, Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said: “This partnership gives customers more options, continues to strengthen America’s infrastructure and increases competition for satellite providers.” That final clause treats satellite operators as rivals to compete with on the carriers’ own ground, which reads as a sign that the threat is taken seriously.

AT&T’s case against SpaceX’s plan

AT&T CEO John Stankey told Axios that SpaceX’s mobile strategy is “not a viable strategy,” according to an Axios report dated September 29, 2026. That is his assessment, not a finding.

His broader remarks on satellite came in defense of AT&T’s fiber strategy. Of fiber he said, “Nothing beats it,” and he argued that satellite, even under favorable assumptions over the next decade, would not beat fiber. That is an argument for AT&T’s own network investment, not a neutral test of satellite against wireless, and it should be read that way.

What a carrier-grade satellite plan would still have to solve

A messaging service and a coverage add-on are hard. Competing with ordinary wireless service is a different engineering and commercial problem. Reporting on the plan points to the following open issues, each of which should be attributed to the analysts and executives who raised it:

  • Capacity and terrestrial infrastructure. Daily service for many customers needs more capacity than an emergency or remote-area fallback, and reporting points to the need for ground infrastructure alongside the satellites.
  • Indoor coverage. Reporting flags indoor coverage as a potential limit. The 800 MHz spectrum targets this gap, but whether it closes the gap is unproven.
  • Ground stations. Small ground stations require permissions, which can slow deployment.
  • Economics. Analysts have questioned how quickly SpaceX could win market share, and the cost case is disputed. Treat these as opinions, not settled figures.
  • Customer switching. Persuading customers to change carriers is a separate hurdle from adding a satellite fallback to a phone they already use.

What the company figures do and do not show

SpaceX reported 12 million subscribers, 10,200 satellites and coverage in 167 countries as of June 30, 2026, in its first earnings report as a public company, according to Axios’s account. These are company-wide totals. The reporting does not break out US mobile customers, so they cannot be used to measure how much of AT&T’s or Verizon’s business is exposed.

No available analysis quantifies how much Starlink Mobile could reduce carrier revenue, subscribers or market share. Any percentage presented as a forecast would be invented, and the after-hours share move is not a substitute for one.

Signals to check before treating this as a holding-level risk

These developments would change the picture more than any single trading session:

  • A published retail price, device list and launch date for a standalone Starlink Mobile plan.
  • The FCC’s decision on the 800 MHz purchase, including the amount of spectrum it covers.
  • Definitive agreements for the AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon joint venture, and whether its closing conditions are met.
  • Customer and pricing disclosures in the carriers’ quarterly results, particularly any change in phone customer growth or churn that management links to satellite competition.
  • Deployment details for the AT&T and AST SpaceMobile arrangement, including which customers can use it and where.
  • Regular-session closing prices for AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in the days after the announcement, rather than after-hours quotes.

This is general information, not individual investment advice. A holding decision depends on the rest of each carrier’s business, including earnings, debt and dividend policy, which this article does not assess.
