A “mixed” grain close means corn, soybeans and wheat did not all move the same way by the end of the trading session. Some contracts finished higher and others lower. For the June 26, 2024 session, the closing prices and stated market drivers could not be confirmed from the sources available for this piece, so this article explains how to read a mixed close, how to check the numbers for any trading day, and why a single session matters, or doesn’t, to a household budget.
What a “mixed” grain close actually tells you
Grain headlines are written in shorthand. Each commodity trades in several contract months, and each contract has its own price. A report that says grains ended mixed is summarizing a mix of directions across those contracts, not a single price move.
| Term | What it means | Why it matters when reading a close |
|---|---|---|
| Contract month | The delivery month a futures contract expires in, such as July or December | The nearby contract and a deferred contract can move in opposite directions on the same day |
| Settlement price | The official end-of-day price set by the exchange for each contract | This is the number most market reports use for the day’s close; it can differ from the last trade |
| Change | The difference between that day’s settlement and the prior day’s settlement | A change of 2 cents means something very different on a $5 contract than it does on a $15 contract |
| Units | Corn, soybean and wheat futures are quoted in cents per bushel | Always check whether the figure is cents or dollars before comparing moves |
What this headline does and does not establish for June 26, 2024
The headline format belongs to a recurring Agriculture.com and Successful Farming series. Other editions in the same series cover different trading days. For example, the July 12, 2024 edition and the September 24, 2024 edition carry the same headline wording but describe other sessions. Their prices and drivers should not be applied to June 26.
Because the June 26 figures are not established here, this article does not say which contracts rose, which fell, or by how much. Those details belong to the original report for that date or to the exchange’s settlement records.

How to verify the close for any trading day
- Find the original report for the date. Search the exact headline and date. Confirm that the article’s publication date matches the trading session you are checking, since series editions are published on different days.
- Record each contract month separately. Note the corn, soybean and wheat contracts named, their closing prices, and the change for each. A mixed headline is only useful once you know which direction each contract moved.
- Check the units. Confirm that prices and changes are in cents per bushel, and that the change is measured from the prior settlement rather than the prior day’s high or low.
- Cross-check against the exchange’s settlement data. Corn, soybean and wheat futures trade on the CME Group platform, and its published settlement prices are the reference for end-of-day figures.
- Separate reported facts from interpretation. Closing prices and volume are data. Statements such as “traders were cautious ahead of a report” are analyst reading and should be treated as context, not as the cause of the move.
Which contract months to look at
Readers often assume “corn” means a single price. In practice, the nearby contract reacts first to supply news and the deferred contracts reflect expectations further out. The table below lists the standard listed months for the three main contracts so you know which rows to read.
| Commodity | Standard listed contract months | What to note in a close |
|---|---|---|
| Corn | March, May, July, September, December | Whether the nearby contract and the December contract moved in the same direction |
| Soybeans | January, March, May, July, August, September, November | The July and November contracts, which are usually the most cited in summer reports |
| Chicago soft red winter wheat | March, May, July, September, December | Wheat often moves separately from corn and soybeans, so a mixed close is common |
Why a single mixed session matters less than it sounds
A mixed close does not by itself change grocery bills or household savings. Futures prices are one input among many. Processing, transportation, packaging, currency movements and retail margins all sit between a bushel of grain and the price on a shelf, and they change on their own schedules. Farm-level and retail price changes typically follow sustained trends across weeks or months rather than one session’s direction.

For a personal-finance reader, the more useful habit is to track several sessions in a row. If corn, soybeans and wheat move in the same direction for a sustained period, that is a more meaningful signal than one day’s mixed headline. Check the closes in your records and compare them over time rather than reacting to any one report.

- Use the exchange’s published settlement data for the exact trading date.
- Look for the same series from the same publisher on the closest trading day, but label it clearly as a different session.
- Do not borrow closing prices from a different date to fill a gap in an article or a spreadsheet.
- Note in your own records that the market drivers for the date are unconfirmed until you can match them to a dated, attributable source.
Grain markets are volatile, and a mixed close is a description of direction, not a forecast. Verified settlement prices for the specific date, read by contract and by unit, are the only reliable way to know how the session ended.
